Jan 4th, 2013 at 8:00AM: California's Pinnacles National Monument is set to be promoted to a national park after a bill to that effect passed through the U.S. Senate on Sunday. That same bill was approved by the House of Representatives in July and now only waits for President Obama's signature to make it official.
Located in California's Gabilan Mountains, just east of the Salinas Valley, Pinnacles National Monument ...

"Visualtraveling - Myanmar" from Patrik Wallner on Vimeo.
A few months ago, President Obama became the first US president to visit the Asian country of Myanmar. Although tourism has opened up in recent years and the country held elections for the first time in 2010, it remains a tightly controlled country that many Americans feel they don't want to support with their travel dollars. No matter ...

While traveling in Iraq I noticed some interesting things that didn't fit into any of the articles in my series. Some of these observations may be obvious to those more familiar with the country, but odd first impressions are one of the fun things about travel!
1. The traffic police have these cool kiosks that imitate their uniform. Looks like this guy left his tie at home.
2. Spongebob ...

May 14th, 2012 at 10:00AM: He may be facing a tough reelection battle in the U.S., but in the heel of Italy, President Obama's still a rock star. A friend of a friend who lives in Lecce, a picturesque city of baroque churches and crumbling stone dwellings in Puglia, told me that while in town I had to try a pasticciotto, a muffin-like treat that is peculiar to this region.
"We have one that's named after Obama too," she ...

Mar 21st, 2012 at 2:00PM: The is-Mexico-safe-or-isn't-it debate spilled over into the 2012 presidential race on Tuesday as G.O.P. hopeful Rick Santorum criticized President Obama for allowing his 13-year-old daughter, Malia, to travel to Oaxaca, Mexico, on a class trip.
"What I would say is that the president's actions should reflect what his administration is saying," Santorum said in an interview with conservative ...

Nov 2nd, 2011 at 8:00AM: President Obama created a new national park yesterday when he invoked the Antiquities Act for the first time in his presidency. The Commander in Chief used his executive powers to designate Fort Monroe, located in Hampton, Virginia, as a national monument, thereby adding it to America's National Park System.
The region has a long and storied history, that dates back to the early 1600's when ...

Obama is big in Africa. There are Obama shops, Obama hotels, Obama t-shirts, even Obama: The Musical. A craze of naming babies Obama hit the continent when he was elected. Even better, the proud parents could fill out the birth certificate with an Obama ballpoint pen.
I came across these in a shop in Harar, Ethiopia. A friend of mine worked for his campaign, so it seemed the perfect gift. The ...

Feb 17th, 2011 at 8:30AM: President Obama took time out from his very busy schedule yesterday to offer details of his America's Great Outdoors program, a new plan designed to preserve the country's national parks and other open spaces, while reconnecting Americans to nature.
The plan, which was originally announced last year, has been refined over the past ten months by a series of "listening sessions" during which ...

Feb 4th, 2011 at 11:30AM: Playing with the notion that President Obama's long-form birth records may be missing, Hawaii Tours is offering a dubiously-titled "Find President Obama's Birth Certificate" tour package that includes sightseeing and "a little bit of detective work" for visitors to the Hawaiian Islands.
"'Find the President's Birth Certificate' tour package was conceived to bring a lighthearted, adventurous ...

Jan 14th, 2011 at 8:30AM: Less than a month after President Obama repealed the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, the U.S. has gotten its first gay museum. The GLBT History Museum is located in the Castro District of San Francisco. Run by the GLBT Historical Society, it features 1,600 sq. ft. of exhibition and activity space.
Yesterday was its grand opening and visitors got to see two exhibitions: Our Vast Queer ...

Dec 23rd, 2010 at 4:00PM: Sure, your chances of actually living in The White House are slim, but you can still live like the President ... in Hawaii. The rumored "Winter White House" that the Obamas vacation in during the holiday season is for rent on HomeAway.com for the bargain price of $3,500 ... per day. Really want to move in? Nov 25th, 2010 at 11:30AM: This may be a sad, sad day for most turkeys, but not Apple and Cider. President Obama chose these two birds for his annual pardon, a feat he compares to being on Dancing With The Stars, but "the stakes for the contestants was much higher...life."
"They've been living it up on corn feed at the W Hotel," said Obama. "That's great advertising ... makes me want to stay at the W."

Nov 5th, 2010 at 1:00PM: Remember when you could make all those "two thirds" jokes about Canada? Based on the currency, there were so many ways we could tweak our northern neighbors. Then, the U.S. dollar plunged. I remember being in Quebec and seeing parity between the two dollars for the first time in October 2007. Well, the momentum has continued, and it's not just about money. It seems as though Canada's brand is ...

Aug 17th, 2010 at 12:00PM: Nothing a president does goes unnoticed. Even the slightest decisions are parsed carefully in the hopes of gaining some insight into to the man, the office or the policy that comes from both. His recent trip to Panama City, Florida, 27 hours to show that you can chill in the Gulf Coast area following the oil spill, may have been a decent move, but Obama's other trips, not to mention those taken by ...

Aug 8th, 2010 at 12:00PM: You can only go to Cuba if President Obama takes the fun out of it. He's looking for ways to ease travel restrictions, particularly for educational and cultural trips. This follows last year's liberalization of travel to Cuba for Americans with family on the island.
Currently, Americans can only travel to Cuba on educational or cultural trips under certain conditions – e.g., if they are ...

Jul 17th, 2010 at 8:00AM: Last summer the First Family spent some of their vacation time in Yellowstone National Park, one of the most popular and iconic parks in the entire U.S. system. It seems Barack, Michelle, and the girls enjoyed their visit so much that they decided to check out another one of the amazing national parks, this time opting to spend the weekend in Acadia National Park, just outside Bar Harbor, Maine.

Jul 16th, 2010 at 2:00PM: President Barack Obama's about to ruin it for everybody.
The folks in Bar Harbor, Maine, according to MSNBC, value their privacy, especially the rich people who go there to escape the heat and the proletariat. They like quiet; they like to be left alone. When a president comes into town, none of that is possible.
Of course, it will be made exponentially worse by the fact that he'll have the ...

Apr 13th, 2010 at 10:00AM: For the past couple of weeks I've been posting a series of articles about travel in Ethiopia. I'm about halfway through but I have some observations that don't fit into anywhere but would be of interest to people considering a trip there. So here are a dozen facts about one of Africa's most interesting countries.
1. When kids see you they'll often shout out "Farenj!" (Foreigner!) It's not meant ...
