Photo of the Day (05/15/08)

Today's photo of the day is this shot of an airplane on approach to Washington's National airport. This 30 second exposure shows the path the airplane takes on a visual approach into DCA. It follows the Potomac river before hanging a right turn near the Washington monument.

The exposure worked out really well, as the ground and the monument can clearly be seen in the foreground. Notice the flashing wingtip strobe-lights showing up as evenly spaced dots on the red wingtips. Congratulations on yet another Photo of the Day, ohad*!

This shot taken in Seoul, South Korea by Traveling Dutch, captures what one doesn't see every day while traveling in Asia. I never have. I don't think I've ever seen a person holding a "Free Hugs" sign ever. I am wondering about the face mask. Has this person decided to not worry about germs? Is this an act of defiance? No matter. Here's sending you a hug on this wonderful Wednesday.

If you have a photo with which you'd like to befuddle or bemuse us, send it our way at Gadling's Flicker photo pool.

Wow. How amazing is this photo? The colours are perfect--deep reddish gold over purple shaded mountains framed by the black trees. Jason Bechtel took this photo of the sunset over the Jemez Mountains at the Santa Fe National Forest in New Mexico, and he did a great job, don't you think?

Grand Canyon National Park is undoubtedly one of the most photogenic places. Even though I have seen hundreds of Grand Canyon photos, I never get tired of them. (OK, I will admit that sometimes, I get tired of those same old sunset pictures.)

This shot by emland particularly struck me: with its hard line somewhere "between heaven and hell." Incredibly dramatic.

I'm a sucker for a good sunset. Aside from being beautiful, the lighting conditions are also perfect for some great photography. Flickr user matt.hintsa has the right idea in today's photo. Matt's shot of Shanghai captures a little bit of everything. The silhouettes of the two ancient Chinese buildings do a great job of framing the ultra-modern skyscraper in the background. And the top of the skyscraper is bathed in that beautiful light you can only get at the very end or beginning of the day, when the sun sits low on the horizon. Nice work.

Think you've got a great shot of a Shanghai sunset? Or maybe just one from Springfield, Illinois? Add it to the Gadling photo pool on Flickr and we just might feature it as our Photo of the Day.

As I was browsing through the Gadling pool, the thumbnail of this photo caught my eye. From a smaller perspective it looked like a posed shot of tourists, happy to take a picture resembling the Beatles. But when I clicked on the photo and got to see the larger version, I was happy to see that it was in fact an adorable chain of Japanese children crossing the street. The woman in the back waves enthusiastically at the camera, and even the little child in pink attempts to do the same. One word: cute. With this photo, hikikomorix managed to capture the delight of a very simple everyday activity.

Gadling fave ladyexpat does it again with this wonderfully psychedelic shot of the Jogyesa Temple in Seoul, South Korea. The colorful lanterns are hanging in honor of the Buddha, whose birthday is celebrated on March 12 this year.

Our photo of the day today comes from damiel who took this picture from the passenger seat of a Sterling Boeing 737 equipped with colorful winglets. With the outside air probably hovering around -50 degrees F what little moisture in the air during the climb out promptly froze.

By focusing on the ice crystals, he captured another beautiful part of flying. The crystals almost look like little organisms splitting off and growing. For a little color, it's great that the winglets were painted almost perfectly to go with the deep blue in the sky.

Way to go, damiel!

Last night one of my Moroccan students gave me a long-standing invitation to visit there. "Sure," I said. "I'd love to." In the meantime, there are the lovely shots in Gadling's Flickr photo pool. This one by jonrawlinson is one of those perfect moments where the subject's head is tilted just right, the lighting creates the right amount of shadow to be interesting and the texture of the background, in this case, the building, looks as if one can touch it.

I wonder what the little girl is making? Each rock was placed carefully in the shape in front of her. Her hand is ready to adjust one more before reaching for another.

If you have captured a moment of a person doing something interesting, send it our way at our Flicker pool.

I love a good night photo, and this one by Trent Strohm (aka Strudel Monkey) fits the bill. It's colourful, it's clear, it's well-composed, and most importantly, it fills me with the insatiable urge to go to China right-freaking-now. Taken recently, the photo is of the Huilan Pavilion in Qingdao, China. It was built in 1891 and might look oddly familiar for a very good reason: It's on the label of all Tsingtao beer bottles.
