History is all around us, particularly in a country like China. Whether you're walking along the magnificent Great Wall or gazing in awe at the Forbidden City in Beijing. Today's photo, taken by Flickr user Trent Strohm, offers us yet another unique glimpse of China's remarkable history: Chairman Mao, leader of the Chinese Revolution. Trent's inclusion of the soldier in front of Mao's portrait ...

Whatever happened to boy bands? I guess popular music is cyclical and we're just not in a boy band era right now. I mean, the Jackson 5 were amazing. New Edition was pretty awesome, too. NKOTB (New Kids on the Block, for those not in the know) were pretty horrible but injected life into the slumping light-wash denim industry. The 90s gave us LFO, the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and a bottomless ...

Sep 21st, 2009 at 11:30AM: Did you know that parts of the Great Wall of China are underwater? Yeah, me neither. But according to Urban Daddy, one particular section of the wall has been submerged under a lake since the 1980's. It took long enough. McDonald's has been there since 1990, so I'm surprised it took Starbucks over 10 years to set up shop in Russia. The shop is located in a Mega shopping mall in Khimki, just north of ...

Jul 16th, 2007 at 11:30AM: Following up on Neil's post, the Starbucks in Forbidden City is in fact, closing. The Chinese have gathered 500,000 signatures that caused the management to shut it down.
Is that good or bad news?
Tim Footman of The Guardian expresses a concern in his column today that "in a global market of implied cultural signifiers, absolutely any product - even a cup of mediocre coffee - seems to have the ...

The Forbidden City and Tian'anmen Square (situated right next to each other) are the two principal tourist destinations in Beijing. When people come to this city, they usually stop here for these two major sites and then take in The Great Wall before moving on to other parts of China. I mean, these are the bare minimum. Tourist requirements. I had already been to Tian'anmen Square a few ...
