May 5th, 2013 at 11:00AM: As we've continued to report at Gadling, a new generation of culinary tours is on the rise. Food-loving travelers want more than generic cooking classes that teach how to make pad thai in Thailand or risotto in Tuscany. And a few companies – such as Destination Hotels & Resorts, North America's fourth largest hotel management company – are complying by offering tours and classes ...

Mar 16th, 2013 at 12:00PM: The countdown has begun; most ski resorts will be closing in roughly three to four weeks, and then they'll temporarily become ghost towns. Welcome to mud season, the bi-annual, post-season time when businesses shutter and residents escape to hotter climes – usually (die-hards head to South America to chase the snow).
Be they lift op or millionaire, most locals have their favorite vacation ...

As the end of each year approaches, I try to take stock of the preceding 12 months, to absorb and assess the adventures, inner and outer. Reviewing this year, I've been filled with gratitude and wonder to realize that this has been one of the most enriching, exhilarating years I've had in a long time, especially the past six months, when I managed to squeeze six special trips into an ...

Travelers can know more about biology and photography by sourcing knowledge in a variety of ways. Online research leads to entire websites devoted to teaching us both. Locally, area colleges and universities will have lab-grade biology experiences as well as hands-on classes on photography for all ages and abilities.
Still, nothing quite beats the thrill of capturing an image of a bear ...

Is your love of travel part of your identity? Have you trawled every Southeast Asian backwater, and explored the twisting streets and alleyways of little-known European cities? Whether your adventurous spirit takes you abroad for work or pleasure, chances are you've seen enough of the planet to know that certain stereotypes exist for a reason.
This year, Gadling decided to come up with some ...

If a Labor Day road trip sounds like a good idea, you're not alone. Over 30 million Americans will be hitting the highways for the long weekend, traveling across town, from state to state or around the nation. Like that idea but have no plans? Here are some must-stay places along some of the best American scenic drives that are not just a place to park, but also a way to extend the journey ...

If you've ever vacationed on the island of Maui, surely you think I jest.
As someone who has lived on Maui for 23 years, I deal with tourists on a daily basis who all have the same view of the Hawaiian Island:
"This place is absolutely incredible, but there's simply no way I could ever live here ... it's just too expensive. How do you afford it?"
Having had this conversation a few ...

Jun 26th, 2012 at 11:00AM: Long ago, a friend of mine referred to Colorado as my "spiritual homeland." I frequently jest that I'm spiritually bankrupt except when it comes to the outdoors, and she was referring to my long-held love affair with the Centennial State.
My friend was right. There are parts of Colorado that are my "happy place," where I immediately feel I can breathe more deeply, shelve my neuroses and just ...

Jun 9th, 2012 at 10:00AM: If you grow up in Southern California, school field trips to the Griffith Observatory are practically a requirement. For whatever reason, I always found the Planetarium more frightening than enlightening, especially in the sixth grade, when David Fink threw up on me on the bus ride home.
Despite many youthful camping trips with my family, I also can't recall ever paying attention to the night ...

May 15th, 2012 at 1:00PM: Some people – me, for instance – tend to skip museums when traveling in favor of fresh air or outdoor recreation. It's always a treat when I can combine the two, especially because I'm fascinated by indigenous cultures. Though not considered museums in the strictest sense, National Historic Parks, Monuments and the like often do have buildings, exhibits, or relics with educational ...

National Park Week has begun! Many travelers will be taking advantage of free access to our country's best national parks but, if they're anything like this writer, won't want to sleep in a tent after.
So, instead of camping try "glamping" at some of these great hotels near national parks that let you enjoy nature without giving up your creature comfort – no camping required.

As I mentioned in the "surfer almost swallowed by whale" craze posted back in November, when not blogging for Gadling I will double as a sailor, diver, and whale naturalist on a fleet of sailing catamarans in Hawaii.
March is traditionally the peak of whale season in the Hawaiian islands, and throughout the winter months of December through April the shallow waters off of Maui are home to ...

Nov 1st, 2010 at 5:00PM: Call it a refusal to grow up, an inability to tolerate winter weather, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), but some travelers will do anything to prolong their summer vacation.
A recent CNN article profiles a handful of travelers and entrepreneurs who have planned their lives around seeking sun rather than snow. Appropriately enough, folks like this are sometimes referred to as "summer ...

Staying in a trailer, driving a 2003 Nissan Sentra, and eating tacos from a roadside truck may not be the first visual that comes to mind when you think "Maui vacation," but budget travel does exist on this expensive island. Most would-be visitors think the words "Maui" and "budget" are somewhat of an oxymoron, and for the most part, they're right. But in this land of expensive lunches and ...

Any trip to Maui from the mainland incurs a bit of jet lag. Once that subsides, and the Mai Tais have been sipped, its time to get out and discover all the adventure the island has to offer. Maui has over 120 miles of coastline and offers endless opportunities for water sports such as kayaking, diving, snorkeling, surfing, paddle boarding, and kite surfing. Land-based adventures usually ...

Not only are they free, they offer plenty to do if a day in the sand gets dull (although, we can't imagine it would)!

Jun 16th, 2010 at 6:35PM: Every now and then you have to look Mother Nature in the face and just appreciate her value. Case in point: this shot, taken by our own Scott Carmichael, at Haleakala National Park in Maui.
The sweeping dunes and low-hanging clouds make a complex statement, but it's nature at its best and it's worth taking a moment to just look... and admire.
Have a photo you think shows the best Mother ...

While millions of visitors flock to Hawaii's fabled golden shores, there are a number of sights around the state that are well-off the typical tourist map - and well worth a visit when in town.
Papohaku Beach, Moloka'i
Stoically occupying the west end of the island of Moloka'i, Papohaku Beach is one of the largest white sand beaches in the state of Hawaii, minus all of the crowds. Nearly ...
