Jan 26th, 2012 at 1:00PM: Feeling chilly? Chances are, if you're not a resident of the following five cities, you really don't have it that bad. The Weather Channel recently released a list of the coldest cities in America, according to NOAA National Climatic Data Center average annual temperature data from the last 30 years.
Caribou, Maine, came in fifth on the list. Dubbed the "Most Northeastern City in America", ...

One of the best aspects of hiking is the escape that it provides from your everyday life. Getting lost - even briefly - in nature allows you to forget that the rest of the world exists. But what happens when you leave the trail and return home? Someone up in Maine decided to plant a remote camera along a trail that cuts through his property. Along with hikers, he recorded footage of moose, ...

One of Maine's most offbeat attractions is about to get five times the space.
The International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland will be moving from its current home in the back of the Green Hand Bookshop at 661 Congress St over to 11 Avon Street, where it will have much more room to show off its collection of Bigfoot print casts, monster photos, movie props, and thousands of other strange ...

Aug 25th, 2011 at 11:30AM: I've been following Gawker's newest series, The Worst 50 States. I've been enjoying following this series. In an effort to pin down not only the best states in the US of A, but, more importantly, the worst states, Gawker compiled a Gawker-invented rating system in order to rank our fair fifty. Granted, this rating system consists solely of the viewpoints of those on staff for Gawker, so the ...

Jul 14th, 2011 at 3:00PM: What's that you say? Summer's half over? Those of us living here in the Pacific Northwest had no idea, given the lack of sun in these parts. But even if you're getting slapped by the mother of all heat waves, it's still early in the season for the best produce summer has to offer. As for where to get great food featuring locally-sourced ingredients? Allow me.
Some cities are inextricably linked ...

Apr 27th, 2011 at 8:00AM: There is no doubt that America's national parks are popular tourist destinations. The past few years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of visitors to the parks, and many of them have been setting attendance records as a result.
With the summer fast approaching, many of us are no doubt making plans for our vacations, with many electing to visit a national park once again this year. The ...

Feb 24th, 2011 at 8:00AM: Back in early January we posted our suggestions for the best adventure travel destinations for 2011, with places like Ethiopia, Croatia, and Guyana all earning a nod. While we gave plenty of praise to those exotic locales, we also gave a big tip of the hat to the good ole' U.S. of A. as well. We went on to espouse the virtues of adventure travel right here at home, which includes not only plenty ...

Feb 17th, 2011 at 10:30AM: A hundred and fifty years ago, the United States descended into a bloody Civil War. Young men on both sides eagerly signed up for what they thought would be a short and glorious conflict. A typical example is this private from the Fourth Michigan Infantry, pictured here courtesy of the Library of Congress. He poses, way too young and unconvincingly cocky, in the early days of the war in 1861. It's ...

Dec 29th, 2010 at 8:00AM: What started as a great day on the slopes at Sugarloaf ski resort ended in disaster yesterday when a chairlift collapsed, sending seven guests to the hospital and leaving more than 200 others stranded above the snow for hours.
Located in Maine, Sugarloaf is considered one of the top ski resorts in the northeast United States. Yesterday, the slopes were filled with skiers and snowboarders taking ...

Don't waste your time looking at the coasts, if you have a map in front of you. And skip the big cities and clichés – you won't find Las Vegas at the top. Austin, Texas is the sexiest city in the country according to a survey by Men's Health Magazine. A number of factors contributed to the win, including birth rates, condom sales and the rate of STDs ... not to mention sex toy sales. ...

Aug 10th, 2010 at 1:30PM: Ever since reading Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods seven ago, I've wanted to through-hike the Appalachian Trail (AT). Bryson's account isn't all birds and trees and sunshine, however. It largely focuses on the blisters and blood, and cast of often-sketchy characters he meets on his grueling trek. Yet through it all, he paints a beautiful portrait of one of America's greatest recreational and ...

In fact, you can get your 15 minutes of fame the way Derek Stansberry did. Here are four steps to take to turn your bad decision into one that everyone will judge you for.

Jul 16th, 2010 at 2:00PM: President Barack Obama's about to ruin it for everybody.
The folks in Bar Harbor, Maine, according to MSNBC, value their privacy, especially the rich people who go there to escape the heat and the proletariat. They like quiet; they like to be left alone. When a president comes into town, none of that is possible.
Of course, it will be made exponentially worse by the fact that he'll have the ...

Jun 10th, 2010 at 2:00PM: The big national parks are popular for a reason, but here are 10 other national parks and forests you may not have visited, and some fun activities to do while you are there. Consider one of these off-the-beaten-path parks for your summer round-trip:

May 11th, 2010 at 1:00PM: The school year is coming to an end, and summer vacation plans are starting to pop up. With heat poised to sweep the nation, the cool New England air (at least relatively cool) makes it an attractive destination. There are plenty of deals out there at the region's inns and resorts, so you'll have plenty of options at your disposal.

Apr 27th, 2010 at 12:00PM: Nothing goes with summer quite like the cracking of lobster shells (and wearing a bib, even if you're a grown man). You can get a lobster anywhere, but if you're within a few hours of the New England coast, the whole experiences changes dramatically. This summer, four hotels are willing to give you and your guest a free lobster dinner when you stay only one night. Of course, it isn't a lobster ...
