Hungary introduces "fat tax" on unhealthy foods
A new bill found it's way onto the political docket in Hungary earlier this week, that if passed would create the world's first "fat tax." The Eastern European country's parliament will now consider the bill, which would raise the price of foods that are deemed as unhealthy. Proceeds from the new law would then be used to cover the rising costs of state-funded health care. When the bill was originally drafted a few months back, it was immediately dubbed as "the hamburger tax," but later the Hungarian government decided that fast food restaurants would not be subject to the new tax. Instead, they've chosen to levy the tariff on items found in grocery and convenience stores that are deemed to have too much salt, sugar, or fat. If the law goes into effect, those items would go up in price by 3.7 eurocents or roughly 5¢. There will also be a 10% increase in the price of liquor and soft drinks as well.
The bill will be debated by the Hungarian Parliament later this summer, but is expected to easily pass into law, making the country the first to actually institute higher fees on unhealthy foods. It is estimated that the law would generate as much as 111 million Euros or approximately $157.6 million. Those funds that are sorely needed to help keep Hungary's cash-strapped health care system afloat.
What are your thoughts on this so-called fat tax? Would you pay a little more for foods you love that might be deemed as unhealthy? Is this any different than the so called "sin tax" on cigarettes or alcohol?

When I stand behind a pregnant 275# woman and her 4 pushing 180# children, and their carts full of crap, chips, bologna, pop, icecream, candy etc. and she pays with a welfare food card,(that we all pay for), yes, I think a fat tax is sooo in order. It is so much cheaper to eat healthy.

I don't know about Hungary but the problem with America (and American's), a lot of times in the poor area of town they do not have grocery stores on every corner as they do in more affluent areas. It is often very inconvenient to get to one so these people are left with convenient store to shop at. What is at convenient stores? Junk food. It's not that these people eat too much and that's why they are fat. It's not that they enjoy eating junk food. It's too often their only option. Even when there are grocery stores, they get the poorer quality of produce etc. So at least for the US, it would only further strap those already in need.

I would love to be able to eat healthy. but being on a fixed income of $600.00 a month and only $100.00 a month in food stamps I am forced to eat hot dogs and bolongy. I do not eat out, I cannot afford it. I dont buy what you people call junk food. Hot doggs and bolongy and spam are not healthy either. bring the prices of fresh vegies and fruits and meats down and I will gladly eat healthier.

Without the majority of Americans even knowing it the Obama Healthcare Plan is adding taxes to almost every thing produced today. Every product that goes into producing a product from cars to the food we eat is already had taxes added to it at every level.. That's one of the reasons the price hike is passed onto the the consumer without him even realizing it. Noticed the frozen pizza is only taking up a fraction of the box, or the number of the serving a product use to provide has dropped from 4 to 3 or 2. They use smaller plates in restaurants in restaurants, hoping the customers don't realize the smaller portions. There is nothing at this point that you can really do to decrease the obesity in American, but go back to it's roots. When a man had a job, and worked dawn to dusk, he required alot of calories to burn up. Now the jobs, if you have one, is part time or 6-8 a day generaly. Alot of those jobs are punching a computer, not shoveling or planting a farm. As a matter of fact at the rate America is going, we will again have the Great Dust Bowl of the 20's in what use to be the Breadbasket of the World in California. Why? Because conservationist don't want a 2" fish to become extinct. Therefore our Government in it's infinite wisdom cut the water off to the farmers to irrigate the land, and farm it the way their families have for generations. Farmers are loosing their livlihood, and farms because of this. We also have had hundreds of thousands of acres of farm land flooded by the government as a result of the storms out west. Now I can see flooding farm land, over a densely populated city, but at some point you have to ask when is enough enough? It's hard to eat healthy when the cost is so high because America is not the leading producer in the world of food. We import most of the products we consume, and export the grains, etc. that we do produce overseas to famine hit areas. Heck we even transform the corn we eat to ethanol. What's gonna happen when we can no longer feed our own people? Trust me when that happens you may wish you had a few extra pounds on you. In the meantime cut out All-you- can-buffets, they are really what is killing Americans. People go in and eat until they are absolutely miserable to "get their money's worth", and the pounds just keep adding on. They are not heavy laborers for the majority, so they can't possibly burn off the 1000's of extra calories they just consumed. I'm not talking about all of them, but if you have every gone to all you can eat restaurants, You probaly noticed that most of the customers are hanging over the sides of their chairs. I refuse to blame all of America's problems on fast food. Alot of it is not good for you, but people need to learn to choose better. If high unemployment continues to rise, there will be less, and less people eating out. Gas has already put a big dent in it, and in vacations in general. Right now most people are struggling just to put food on the dinner table for their families, and adding to that price will not helping the economy. Maybe we should wait until the economy starts to show some sign of life before we consider adding another tax to the chips, and soda. Somehow this just does not seem like the war we should be waging right now. Let's get the economy on track, encourage entepreneurs, make borrowing money easier, stop deflating the dollar, This will help decrease the inflation, develope our own natural sources of enery which the government knows we have, but will not allow it to be developed, creat jobs so Americans can Regain their pride in Themselves, and the USA. We need our Government to protect our Freedoms, not constantly take them away behind closed doors. Let Americans do what they to best. Work hard, develope new ideas and technology, and lead the world in motivation, and envy. Envy because America is special. It is that shining light on the hill. It is the county that only a few hundred years ago defeated the largest Nation in the world, and established itself a Free Nation under God. Please read the Declarartion of Independance, and the Constitution to realize just what we have before it is taken away. We are a "Republic", not a Democracy. This was done to prevent tyrants from trying to increase government, while decreasing the rights of the States, and the PEOPLE of this nation. Read , study, and learn our true history before it's completely erased. If you think socialism is the way to go, why worry about a tax on "fat foods"? When the Government takes complete control, you will ask what happened? Why do I have no guns for self protection? Why do I no longer have freedom of speech? Why am I working if I have nothing to show for it? What happened to the middle class? Was I asleep when our president radically transformed our nation as he said he would? Will you Recognize America? Will you look at your children and say, "I know they will have a better life than I did growing up in a Free Nation? Will you look at you grandchildren and tell them you are sorry that you did nothing, while the government ran up 14 TRILLON dollars in debt to others nations they could not repay, then ask for the debt ceiling to be raised 2.4TRILLON more. Think about it! What are you going to tell them that you did besides worry about a new "Fat Tax" on unhealthy foods. Ignore all the distractions the government is throwing up to take your mind off of what is really important.........................BE an AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!We are the melting pot of the world-------now let's act like it.

Forget the right or wrongness of the tax. My problem with it is that just like every other instance when a "large chunk of change" get into the hands of "powers that be", that $1.00 that went in is lucky to come out as 0.49 on the other end. The tax alone will create a bureau just for collection & disbursement.

Blah blah bla. "its not the goverments job to tell us what to eat" the goverments job is not to tell us what to eat but to look out for us and make sure we dont harm ourselves. same thing with drunk driving. they make it illegal so less people die. but its not like the government is making junk food illegal, so take a chill pill. while the same people will be talking about how bad an obese child's parent is, your are getting mad when the government tries to do something about it. and you all should not be critisizing, because i doubt that you would know what to do if you were in thier shoes.

Now our fat politicians will be doing the same here!

If you don't like the idea...don't buy it.
If the money really goes where they claim it will go...
I think it's a great idea.

By choice, I smoke. And have had to deal with all the taxes and cost increases. By choice, I drink beer and have had to deal with all the tax and cost increase. Obesity, is becoming, if not already the #1 killer in the United Staes, if not all over the World. We are all going to die of something. But people have been infringed upon for a very long time for things that they do. So suck it up and deal with it. I feel like if I have been inconvienced by this for my BAD habits, then.....it's about time if you are inflicting bad habits, so should you. By Choice.....YOU choose bad eating habits and now the goverment is gonna get some of your money to!! If only all of these extra taxes could go to the seniors and elderly who are now counting on our Goverment to pay Social Security for the wages these people have put in their entire lives. So Sad.

Where in the constitution does is say the Government has to provide Healthcare? Some liberal bunch just got that crap passed and made into law. So if the Government wants to get in the business of provinding healthcare, then you people say its OK to tax potatoe chips? Well I have my own plan that takes care of me quit well so leave me the hell alone! If I wanna eat some chips or put salt on my food it aint none of your damn business! You are encroaching on my freedoms! So go tax all the people on your government plans! Oh, but then some healthy people eat chips too. Oh shit that does cause a problem, oh wait, no problem just tax everyone that eats a chip evey once in a while like those that spend their whole foodstamp voucher on chips dip & beer. So I guess to make it fair you need to have big brother counting the chips and checking everyones weight on a daily basis. Now that would be fair. Where is the civil liberty union? You liberals are pathetic!

One more time the government controlling what we do. Don,t any of the sheep out there see the slow and sometimes fast "controls" being implimented? Food, smoke, drinks, light bulbs, energy,ETC, All in the disguise of "helping us".
The money collected never goes to where it should. It seems to create another bureau with some government crony making another government lifetime job.
Leave controls to the states. Then we can choose the state we like with the least amount of control and move there. I could go on, but you sheep out there still think government is the answer. Just look where we all are today d.thanks to all our governmen has done "for themselves. It has to be stopped and change.

We are so obsessed with finding taxable resources that it makes me ill....Backtracking the fat tax principle to its logical origin....government's will probably consider taxing your parent's estate if, when they die, you are overweight due to their neglect of teaching you nutritional and exercise practices. Sound a little far out ? ....its out there with current governmental logic that deprives you of your individual decisions and choices.
I can see it now, DNA testing to exempt you from the fat tax based on your predecessor's NATURAL propensity to be heavier than some height and weight chart................ Casey

It all started with this political correction. Remember the good old days when they had phyiscal education in elementary schools. I don't recall seeing a bunch of fat kids. We have become a nation of gadget kids. They are now taxing smokes but however the child's medical programs are becoming unfunded which mean alot of taxes are not coming in. Go ahead and tax the unhealthy foods and see what un-intended consequences will do later. I like the unhealthy stuffs but only in moderation. I am 60, no medication, good shape. What is next..tax flour, breads, rice, birthday cakes etc etc?

cry me a river. how come whenever you online implants have no argument left you fall back on "hey man you're hitler!". I gotta LOL at you and your feeble attempt to displace the blame. And to be honest, there is nothing wrong with a certain standard of deportment. But then again, most of you implants wouldnt know what that means. You're too busy eating to spend time reading. I brought some legit content to my posting. You're posting lacks any substance and basically you're a whiner. Wonder how much you weigh... Peace

It is not always sugar, fat. sodium,or flour issues that always creat obesity. There are hundereds of medications out there that also cause this problem. I alone take 4 meds that cause weight gain, bloating and many other reactions. I do agree that the american public do consume unhealthy food.another problem is the cost of healthier foods. Don,t beat up on the people on Medicare or Medicade. Medicare payments are deducted from S.S. No one really wants to be on Medicade. Some cercumstances are beyond their control. If the so called fat tax goes to the right purpose then go for it.

If you really knew, and or cared what was happening in America, and in the World, you would be shotting "Hitler" also. Wake up and look around our nation, and the world before it's to late. LIke blogging? At this point you still can. What about when the Government has comlete control of that also. They are already working on it. Keep talking about the "fat tax", and sit around twiddling your thumbs while our country is radically transformed as Obama promised even before he was signed into office. It's like you are saying welcome "socialism, I've always wanted a Nanny Government to take care of all my needs." Watch what you wish for. When our freedoms are gone ,they are gone. Think about it.
