Hungary introduces "fat tax" on unhealthy foods
A new bill found it's way onto the political docket in Hungary earlier this week, that if passed would create the world's first "fat tax." The Eastern European country's parliament will now consider the bill, which would raise the price of foods that are deemed as unhealthy. Proceeds from the new law would then be used to cover the rising costs of state-funded health care. When the bill was originally drafted a few months back, it was immediately dubbed as "the hamburger tax," but later the Hungarian government decided that fast food restaurants would not be subject to the new tax. Instead, they've chosen to levy the tariff on items found in grocery and convenience stores that are deemed to have too much salt, sugar, or fat. If the law goes into effect, those items would go up in price by 3.7 eurocents or roughly 5¢. There will also be a 10% increase in the price of liquor and soft drinks as well.
The bill will be debated by the Hungarian Parliament later this summer, but is expected to easily pass into law, making the country the first to actually institute higher fees on unhealthy foods. It is estimated that the law would generate as much as 111 million Euros or approximately $157.6 million. Those funds that are sorely needed to help keep Hungary's cash-strapped health care system afloat.
What are your thoughts on this so-called fat tax? Would you pay a little more for foods you love that might be deemed as unhealthy? Is this any different than the so called "sin tax" on cigarettes or alcohol?

Alright, I can see it from both points of view, but let me ask this: Is it right for the government to tell us what we can and cannot eat? Before you answer, consider this- when it's going to be the government who's paying for your diabetes, liver failure, hormone imbalances, obesity, heart disease, kidney disease, etc., do you think they have a right then? It's like us telling our children that they can't touch the hot burner on a stove, because it will hurt them, and we'll have to take them to the doctor if they touch it too long. Makes sense to me, honestly, I'd support it if they were really going to put the funding into Medicare, which as I understand it, is a program that's struggling to make ends meet as it is. Let's be honest with ourselves here; America is getting fat, and it's causing health problems in the US that were never expected when Medicare was put into practice.

We need to keep govt out of our business. Fat people should pay more for healthcare through private insurance if they are using it more. Those who are in good shape should not have to pay more for a bag of chips to subsidize fat peoples healthcare costs.

I can't believe that Americans just continue to want more government involvement. We live in the most free country in the world, and yet you liberals just want all those freedoms taken away. If you want a government to dictate everything you do then why do you stay here? There are plenty of countries that would welcome you in order to rule your life. Why can't you be proud of having the right to do what you want to do? What is so offensive about having liberty and freedom? We really are smart enough to live our own lives.

I for one pay for my own health care and should not be told what I can and can't eat because all of the sudden the government has decided that the country needs national health care. The government should have taken cost into consideration before making the health care plan. If people take care of themselves financially why should the government have any say over how they take care of themselves physically?

I am wondering why the Government does not OUTLAW these types of foods.... and Cigarettes..... and Alcohol....Could it be the TAX revenue that they generate? a tax on un healthy food. I don't think that it will work. I actually believe that it will cause lay offs those that makes the un healthy food may need to look for another job. If you want to make money with a tax then tax something that everyone enjoys and everyone will buy call it a dessert tax. a sweet tax. The state of California had such a tax and they had to invent ways to spend the money. It was work trying to find the ways. They did away with it and had money for 3 years and that tax was only a penny on the dollar for sweets.

We've beat up the smokers and now are hard at it on the fat people. Now, when are we going to start on alcoholics? Ever wonder how much health care money is spent on caring for alkies who never stop drinking, those who do rehab repeatedly (paid for by insurance)and for family members who seek counseling for physical and mental abuse from living with alcoholics? And we can add those who abuse legal and illegal drugs into this picture. Think all that care is free? Where is the outrage over these expenses? Also, add to the problems these folks cause the expense of insurance premiums for your auto, cause you are absorbing some of their expenses in your premium. Think the tax revenue on alcohol is a sacred cow and there are so many alcoholics in the government that we won't ever see anyone get excited about the expense these folks cause for all of us? Just sayin!

When I worked for McDonnell Douglas, we discussed flying cars. We knew that if we put four obese adults into it, it would not get off the ground. One idea was the blubber tax. If you noticed, flying cars are still on the drawing board...Al-

Sandra...where have you been living the past few years? 22 months ago Michelle Obama started this crap. Vending machines in school...what do they dispense? Now people...stop to think...with your own minds. Remember school times...blue eyes vs brown eyes etc? Today a tax on fattening foods...tomorrow a tax on left handed people...maybe a tax on people that wear leather shoes...maybe a tax on people that wear tennis shoes. If the tax doesn't affect you then maybe you're all for it. Eventually the tax will shine on you...then what? Will you cry this tax is unfair? Sandra, I hate to say it but you're a dickweed! You see only your side so why not join the KKK?

ok people, I need to lose wt but I don't eat junk food. In fact people I work with can't get over how "healthy" I eat. When it's a birthday (even my own) I pass up on the cake and ice cream. I eat flaxseed. I admit I am a sporadic exerciser. But have gone years where I exercise daily. I am sick to death of hearing people say of someone who is obese that they are just eating all the time and the wrong things. I also know other people like me. I have also gone on those programs that give you the food to eat and NOTHING. So people stop judging.

i thank they should also tax people who use jogging trails sense the government pays for them also any one who uses national parks sense the government pays for them. My point is the government pays for a lot of things for people just because you use or eat healthy doesn't mean that the government is not taxing someone one who does not use it to pay for you to use it. I don't go mountain climbing so why should i pay to maintain the park. if you want to eat healthy and i don't why should i be tax and the mountain climber not and yes they pay fees to use the park but i already pay taxes to buy the products i want.

They could start in the United States Congress and weigh all the Senators and Representatives using their height and cholesterol counts against the charts. Anyone 15lbs and over should then be taxed for being overweight. All the chips and snack foods and colas should be taxed by weight and content. All cereals with more than 10 percent added sugar (Sugar Smacks, Frosted Mini Wheats) a five cent tax charge per 18-24 ounce box, 10 cent per 25-32 ounce box. Then let's tax those who serve food where they children are being given surpersized dinners and extra large fries. The extra crispy chicken and flour coated fish fillets a 20 cent tax per piece. MAybe then the industry will stop over packing the food with higher calories and empty calories.

I want to point out a couple of things to the people that support this new tax yet would cry foul if the unhealthy people were charged more for their healthcare. This is the exact same thing just in a different box. If by your own argument, these foods are the leading causes of most health problems, then taxing these foods is nothing more than a tax on unhealthy people since they are the ones buying more of it. Why not just go directly to the source and start charging unhealthy people more for their healthcare? Why waste the time and effort destroying jobs, because some people don't exercise (yes, that is the real problem)?
