Fake 3D crater designed to slow down London cyclists

When the Islington city council tried to think of a way to slow down cyclists on their famous canalway, they came up with a creative and (hopefully) effective solution.
The way I see it, this piece of "art" may have several unintended consequences:
- Cyclists see this thing and panic - causing them to swerve and hit the fence, shooting them into the river
- Cyclists see it, know it isn't real and slow down to stare at it, hitting a pedestrian
- Cyclists know it is fake, so they speed up to show the council what a waste of money this is

4. Cyclists slow down and then see that it's fake. They then speed over the next hole only to realise it was real.

Why didn't they just put up some obstacles instead, like a large planter, trees, post, etc.....

None of the above. There is a British artist that is known for this type of chalk street art. I believe this is his work. I don't think the local authorities had anything to do with this. This picture was set up. If you look at the rider on the right you will notice she looks like she is riding across the hole on a wooden board and looking down into the hole. She most likely is part of the setup. If you were to view this 3D "art" from any angle other than where the camera is, the "hole" would be distorted and would not look right. The image is drawn from the perspective of the camera location.

It is a beautiful piece of art but I doubt anyone would slow down again after the first time. Honestly I have to agree with jeff the angle would change the appearance of it and it will most likely not look the same from a bicycle as it does in the picture. It is interesting and cool though.

Or they are going so fast before they see it and hit their front brake instead of the back brake and flip over the handlebars and break their necks .Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen really ! Seriously this COULD and does happen .

MAYBE IF THE GUY PAINTED SOME FAKE SPEED BUMPS OR "SPEED LIMIT" OR "WATCH FOR PEDISTRIANS" SOMETHING LESS HAZARDOUS THAN A CRATER, MAYBE A WATER PUDDLE, OR A JACKET LAYING IN THE ROAD.

Much ado about nothing.

IT WOULDN'T LOOK THE SAME FROM THE DIRECTION FROM WHERE THE BIKERS ARE COMING. JEEZ. THIS TYPE OF ARTWORK IS UNIDIRECTIONAL.

They're going to use Brad Pitt dressed as a traffic director to prevent accidents in Omsk. makes this look like small potatoes. It's cool, though!
