Underwire bra dispute causes woman to miss her flight
First it was loose change in your pockets, then it was jewelry, and then it was shoes. For Jet Blue passenger Nancy Kates, it seems like bras might be the next thing to go in the airport security line. A big-busted woman, Kates was wearing a large underwire bra as she went through the security check at Oakland International Airport but when it set off the metal detector she was pulled aside by a TSA agent.Kates accuses the agent of getting a little too personal. "The woman touched my breast. I said, 'You can't do that,' " Kates said. "She said, 'We have to pat you down.' I said, 'You can't treat me as a criminal for wearing a bra.' "
Refusing to be fondled, Kates asked to see a supervisor and then the supervisor's surpervisor. Kates reminded the TSA agents that the Constitution bars unreasonable searches and that "scrutinizing a woman's brassiere is surely unreasonable." She was offered a private room to have her pat-down, but Kates refused. Instead she asked if she could simply remove her bra, to which the TSA agent agreed. This isn't the first breast related TSA incident, but the whole escapade took 40 minutes and caused Kates to miss her flight. Jet Blue was nice enough to put her on another one.
Being a woman, I myself have had the bra pat-down several times, and I'm sure there are other fellow females on the Gadling team that have gone through the same experience. Normally such pat-downs are off limits to fingers; TSA agents only use the side of their hands. But all the same it's still a little unnerving. As Kates said, "If I was carrying nail clippers and forgot about them, I wouldn't have gotten so upset. But here I was just wearing my underwear."
What are your thoughts? Is it humiliating to get a pat-down to make sure the underwire in your bra is what's setting off the metal detector?

EUPOPEANS - THEY KNOW HOW TO HANDLE THIS SITUATION.
TSA ARE STUPID AS*ES. WHY DON'T THEY JUST WAND US, ASK US TO JIGGLE THE DARN BRA, TO MAKE SURE NOTHING FALLS OUT, AND THEN REALIZE IT IS AN UNDERWIRE BRA, AND LET US LARGE BUSTED LADIES BE. MOST OF US WEAR THESE TYPE OF BRAS FOR SUPPORT. IF YOU PUT PLASTIC IN THEM - THE DARN THINGS BREAK EASILY.
GET A BRAIN TSA.

Why not just walk through the metal detector topless, that may give em something to think about

Get real people, I just had the pat down and they said they were sorry each time. I would rather have the pat down then have a bomb on my plane!!!!!!!!!

Just a suggestion...
I have stopped wearing large metal bracelets and necklaces as well as belts with large buckles when I travel to expedite my time going through security. To avoid any problems, perhaps all of us who are well endowed should forgo the underwires on travel days--a sports bra or non-underwire might be the solution to avoid those pesky pat downs.

when you find a sports bra or non-underwire bra that keeps my girls where they belong then by all means let me know. the heck with travel days, i'll wear that sucker every day.

I will not change my bra for flying. I am a large breasted woman who has given birth to 5 children. I will wear my underwire bra everywhere I go so that my boobs do not fall to the floor. I did not ask for large breast and I do not feel I should be discriminated against due to having large breast. GIve me a freakin break. TSA is a HUGE JOKE

Why do you have to dress for total strangers? You aren't afraid in your local grocery store, which in many places have more people than one entry gate in an airport! Why do you have to undress to pass the entry gate and you're not allowed in other public places without your shoes or a shirt? WHY ARE YOU WALLOWING IN FALSE FEARS? If you don't stand up for yourself, WHO WILL?

I have never seen a sports bra or other bra in my size that does not have an underwire in it... heck I'm lucky if I get a bra that only has 3 hooks! If any of ya see a 36G bra that can get through the security gate without making me have to be patted down, please say so...

TSA is a joke.i had my work bag with me when i wen't to renew my work id(ups at dia)i got passed tsa with 4 box cutters in my bag
Sharon Aug 27th 2008 10:35PM
I fly monthly for work and and fly out of DIA and NEVER take off my belt, jewelry, including body piercings, hair clips and I wear a underwire bra and have NEVER ONCE set off the metal detector. Kinda makes you wonder what's going on??!!!

I have a total knee repalcement and a rod in my femur and set off the equipment all the time. Every time I am wanded and patted down they first ask me if I want to go to a private room. If she was that concerned about being patted down she should have gone to a private room. I would rather people get wanded and patted down than possibly be blown up.
MAYBE IT'S JUST ME!
tamagramy@aol.com Aug 27th 2008 2:45PM
This is why I fly braless!!
petra.allen@verizonbusiness.com Aug 27th 2008 2:49PM
doesn't that woman realize it's for her own (and everyone else's) safety? What's a little pat-down compared to that? Let's get real here folks!

Reasons I try to avoid flying. The TSA --- keeping the world safe from women wearing underwire bras and bombs in their boobs. Tax payer dollars well spent. Flight attendants---keeping passengers safe from nursing mothers. Exceptional customer service.

"Safety" my tail. Checking baggage for guns, knives and other weapons is "safety." Copping feels and banning ANYthing metal in clothing or flesh is paranoid insanity and the result of an agency unaccountable to anyone. I sometimes set off beepers because I have two metal stents in the artery above my heart. I assure you, I have NO intention of digging them out of my chest in the off-chance I could figure out a way to hijack a plane with these two tiny metal springs. They keep us under control with fear but freedom entails risks. Take your pick. The only people totally safe are the dead and the imprisoned.

What about the forced to remove piercings? Was that for our safety? You have small people who think they have big power and will abuse it period. Some search is necessary but there is and should be a limit to it.
Bruce Bennett Aug 27th 2008 2:54PM
What a great concept -- boobs checking boobs.
Sleep well America. TSA has the situation well in hand.
Citiroze Aug 27th 2008 2:55PM
Well, I feel that if something you're wearing or packing sets-off sensitive equipment..., then it needs to be checked--rightfully so.
In the interest of safety, I feel that the inconveniences of a few justify the overall safety of the whole. It really is that simple. SAFETY FIRST.
Add to this the fact that the system isn't perfect, so there will inevitably be some glitches, frustrations, and seemingly over-the-top behavior along the way.
Besides, until there can be an "Intention Scanner" for everyone wishing to board our federally regulated highways, by-ways, and airways, then understand that public safety is the goal! And, if you miss a flight in the process of checking-out something suspicious, it's unfortunate, but rather necessary in my book!!
