Dec 2nd, 2011 at 12:00PM: As a native Californian and longtime former Bay Area resident, I have to confess there's no place like home when it comes to the American food/dining/wine scene (New Yorkers, feel free to sharpen your knives...).
California's always been progressive when it comes to food and drink, from the early days of the vaqueros and Gold Rush-era San Francisco, right up to today's never-ending parade of ...

Nov 20th, 2011 at 12:00PM: What's better when you're on vacation than a day at the vineyards? How about wineries that let you stay the night, as well? No more worrying about drinking and driving or figuring out transportation as these ten wine hotels offer guests vino tastings as well as a comfortable place to sleep.

Sep 30th, 2011 at 4:00PM: Wine tasting has never been so convenient, or inexpensive! While most people know that California is a premier destination for those looking to sample some of world's best vino, wine tours can often get a bit pricey. That is why Carmel-by-the-Sea's new self-guided Wine Walk is a perfect option.
Encompassed within a few blocks of this coastal California village are 13 different wine tasting ...

Off in the distance, there are mountains. Gently zig-zagging ridges hidden under a layer of mist and slowly evaporating fog. When the sun strikes them just so, like we see here in Flickr user morrisey's photo in Mendoza, Argentina, they can create a striking visual spectacle. It's almost like looking at a series of waves crashing along the beach, gently rolling towards the shore driven by an ...

Feb 9th, 2011 at 1:00PM: In my Video of The Day post last week, I introduced you to Dave Pinke. He's a New Yorker with some travel video pop sensibility. His videos feature a collage of visually stimulating clips alongside upbeat music. To honor an upcoming trip I have to Northern California, here's Dave Pinke's video featuring San Francisco. Enjoy.

I work part-time in a cheese shop, and I'm also a contributing editor at culture, a consumer cheese magazine. I can't help noticing that, despite a still-sluggish economy, people don't want to do without their cheese. Especially if they've fallen for a specific type during their (usually European) travels.
Not everyone who bellies up to the counter is a globetrotter or a cheese geek, but ...

I often wonder if grapes in California aspire to become wine or raisins. To become wine means to be a part of the illustrious California wine country industry. To become a raisin is to follow in the footsteps on the California Raisins. Is one accomplishment more prestigious than the other? Sure, maybe some grapes just want to be grapes. That, to me, seems to be setting the bar low.
I was ...

Feb 8th, 2009 at 4:00PM: When I picture "wine country" in my head, this is exactly the sort of idyllic vista that comes to mind. Which is exactly why I chose this shot from jrodmanjr, taken in Sonoma County, CA. The artfully arranged wine barrels, the rustic villa and the sloping vineyards covered in grape vines all combine to create a rather majestic view, don't they? Have any great travel photos you'd like to share ...

Jan 7th, 2009 at 11:30AM: Summary: In the heartland of our very own United States of America, "lake effect weather" has given birth a strip of wineries along the southeast coast of Lake Michigan. Lake effect weather is a well-documented phenomenon which results in far more precipitation, especially snow, on the southern and eastern sides of large lakes than the northern and western sides. More precipitation means lots of ...

Sep 11th, 2006 at 7:50PM: When you're planning your trip to visit the incredibly lovely Bordeaux region of France, you'll simply have to cast off your urge to bring along your backpack and camp. Bordeaux must be done haut-style.
Whether you arrive in Bordeaux via the TGV from Paris or by plane into the Bordeaux airport (Merignac), head north out of the city, and you're right in the Medoc region. I can give a strong ...

May 23rd, 2006 at 1:05PM: In Northern California, 25 Benedictine monks have opened the first Roman Catholic Cistercian winery in North America. The brothers hope to make money selling their syrah, a full-bodied red wine, in order to support the monastary. "We need to work to keep going, but we don't want or expect to get rich. But the wine has done well - better than expected," said Father Harold Meyer, who ...

Apr 27th, 2006 at 6:33AM: This
is not going to mean much to the vast majority of you out there, but for me, whose grandmother-in-law lives in Santa
Rosa, this is a cool deal. Not to mention that Santa Rosa is nicely in proximity to wine country, which is cool. So
maybe there is something in this news for you. Well, the news is this: Santa Rosa will
be serviced by a new flight from Horizon Airlines for the first time ...
