Jan 10th, 2013 at 8:00AM: Passengers aboard a whale watching tour off the coast of California got a rare treat recently when they witnessed a large dolphin stampede. The tour was being conducted off of Southern Cal's Dana Point by a company called Dolphin Safari when they came across a large pod of the creatures swimming near the surface. The result was a spectacular show of wildlife churning through the water that has to ...

People travel far and wide to see whales in their own habitat, and it's not uncommon for the majestic mammals to take notice of visitors and do a little showing off for them. In the home video above, however, a father and son are treated to the sight of an entire pod of humpback whales doing just that. It's unclear exactly where the video was shot, but it's evident that the whales are ...

Sep 27th, 2012 at 5:00PM: Since 1991, Australian researchers have been aware of Migaloo, a rare albino whale and the only documented adult albino humpback in existence. Now in his 20s, Migaloo makes yearly appearances along Australia's East Coast during the humpback migration from Antarctica to the tropical waters off the Great Barrier Reef. His appearance still causes a stir, however. He even has his own website.

Jun 9th, 2012 at 10:00AM: If you grow up in Southern California, school field trips to the Griffith Observatory are practically a requirement. For whatever reason, I always found the Planetarium more frightening than enlightening, especially in the sixth grade, when David Fink threw up on me on the bus ride home.
Despite many youthful camping trips with my family, I also can't recall ever paying attention to the night ...

If you spend much time searching the Internet, you'll find millions of photos of cats. People spend hours browsing sites like ICanHasCheezburger? and CuteOverload to find funny or adorable images of animals. You might say that cat photos (okay, probably porn too) are the backbone of the Internet. Animals are a favorite photo subject of travelers as well, whether we're marveling at the ...

Oct 13th, 2011 at 1:00PM: Right now, Hervey Bay, Australia, is seeing the highest number of whales in 25 years. According to Wally Franklin of The Oceania Project there are a record number of whales migrating down the coast. In fact, he estimates 14,000 whales in the humpback population of eastern Australia. Franklin also strongly believes that this trend will continue into November, as mother humpbacks teach their calves ...

Oct 12th, 2011 at 5:00PM: Usually we're uncomfortable posting direct press pitches, but these pictures are too good to resist. Queensland, Australia, is often regarded as one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Home to various UNESCO World Heritage Sites, beautiful beaches, breathtaking city skylines, a tropical climate, and wildlife that you can experience up-close, it is no wonder that 2.1 million people ...

Aug 16th, 2011 at 12:30PM: I woke up early one morning last week and realized that August 15th would mark two years since I arrived in Seattle. Normally I wouldn't take note of such a thing, given that I tend to move with the frequency of a fugitive. Staying in one place just isn't in my nature.
But here I was, 24 months into life in Seattle, and of the many things I'd yet to do, I hadn't: been to the San Juan Islands ...

Feb 1st, 2011 at 11:00AM: Since the end of the Tamil Tiger confilct in May 2009, travel to Sri Lanka has been increasing, with the country celebrating their 600,000th foreign tourist last month. This year, 700,000 are expected with tourism growing to 2.5 million a year within 5 years, reports the BBC. "The nature has blessed us with beautiful beaches, waterfalls, exotic wildlife and historic places. We as a nation have a ...

Sep 30th, 2010 at 3:00PM: I can't remember who first told me about Chiloe, but I do recall that it was just a few weeks before my first trip to Chilean Patagonia. For a year I'd been planning an itinerary around my personal Holy Grail: rafting the thunderous Futaleufu River.
Located across the Chacao Channel from the bustling town of Puerto Montt in northern Patagonia, Chiloe is a 41-island archipelago. The largest of ...

Sep 15th, 2010 at 3:00PM: My dinner lay spread out beneath me in every direction, plainly visible in the crystalline waters. The rocky inlets and kelp forests of Central California's eight Channel Islands are home to what is considered to be some of the finest uni, or sea urchin, in the world. To better see them in their natural habitat, I was sea kayaking off Santa Cruz Island, 25 miles offshore of the Santa Barbara ...

Another bald eagle. Yawn.
I had just completed a tranquil, one-hour paddle from Whidbey Island's Dugualla Bay, to Hope Island State Park. This dollop of land is a 106-acre marine camping park, reachable only by boat. It boasts a hiking trail and just four stunning, primitive, beachfront sites hidden amongst ferns and old-growth Douglas-fir forest. As we approached the island, my guide, Simon, ...

Jul 22nd, 2010 at 1:00PM: The goal of a whale watching trip is self-explanatory: you're hoping to get up close and personal with some whales. But that isn't always a good thing. Sometimes whale watchers get more than they bargained for - like when a confused whale leaps out of the water and falls directly onto your boat. That's exactly what happened to Paloma Werner on a recent whale watching trip near Cape Town, South ...

It's Wild America day here at Gadling, and we should feel grateful to have so many wild things to be crazy about here in America! Well, if nothing else, there's always "Where the Wild Things Are," which could very well be this year's sleeper of a film. Here are few more Wild America travel sleepers that should have caught your eye but for some reason didn't.
Aquariums might not at first ...

Nov 9th, 2009 at 1:30PM: When most people think of a "safari" they think of hiking through the bush of South Africa or trekking through the jungles of Costa Rica in search of exotic animals native to the region.
But here in the US we have plenty of our own wild animals to see and going "on safari" here doesn't have to mean doing one of those drive-though "wild animal" parks where non-native animals like zebras and ...

Back in August, Gadling's Scott Carmichael wrote about various eco-friendly resorts in Australia. I have never enjoyed reading a Gadling post more, but that may be because I was reading it by the pool of one of the resorts that he profiled. As I enjoyed a beer at Eco Beach while reading Scott's piece, I was curious about just what makes a resort truly environmentally friendly. Is it how it ...

Aug 19th, 2009 at 10:00AM: Ever wonder what the big deal is about whale watching? Well then, my guess is that you haven't been whale watching.
Whale watching is a serene and eco-friendly activity. Actually seeing a whole darn whale in its own habitat is truly astonishing, and will fill you with wonder. What's more, whales will often "play" with whale watchers -- they know you're watching, and it turns out they're kind of ...

Jun 25th, 2007 at 10:55PM: Visitors to Queensland, Australia will soon be able to sign up for whale watching trips aboard a new boat named in honor of Steve Irwin. The Australia Zoo's latest venture will depart from Mooloolaba Wharf on Queensland's Sunshine Coast beginning July 1st. Steve's Whale One vessel was named by Irwin's kids, Bob and Bindi, as a tribute to their dad. The 130-seat boat will offer 360-degree views ...
