People travel far and wide to see whales in their own habitat, and it's not uncommon for the majestic mammals to take notice of visitors and do a little showing off for them. In the home video above, however, a father and son are treated to the sight of an entire pod of humpback whales doing just that. It's unclear exactly where the video was shot, but it's evident that the whales are ...

Nov 29th, 2012 at 4:00PM: A group of sea-kayakers in Grotfjord, Norway, had an up-close-and-personal experience with a humpback whale over the weekend, reports CNN. Such encounters are rare, especially with humpbacks, which makes this video even more spellbinding.

Sep 27th, 2012 at 5:00PM: Since 1991, Australian researchers have been aware of Migaloo, a rare albino whale and the only documented adult albino humpback in existence. Now in his 20s, Migaloo makes yearly appearances along Australia's East Coast during the humpback migration from Antarctica to the tropical waters off the Great Barrier Reef. His appearance still causes a stir, however. He even has his own website.

Jun 9th, 2012 at 10:00AM: If you grow up in Southern California, school field trips to the Griffith Observatory are practically a requirement. For whatever reason, I always found the Planetarium more frightening than enlightening, especially in the sixth grade, when David Fink threw up on me on the bus ride home.
Despite many youthful camping trips with my family, I also can't recall ever paying attention to the night ...

If you spend much time searching the Internet, you'll find millions of photos of cats. People spend hours browsing sites like ICanHasCheezburger? and CuteOverload to find funny or adorable images of animals. You might say that cat photos (okay, probably porn too) are the backbone of the Internet. Animals are a favorite photo subject of travelers as well, whether we're marveling at the ...

Jan 1st, 2012 at 9:00AM: Whale sightings off the coast of California are at record high numbers already this season, as the annual migration of Pacific gray whales appears to have started about two weeks earlier than normal. This news has surprised and delighted whale experts, who see the large numbers as a great indication that the species is healthier than expected.
Gray whales generally pass the summer above the ...

Oct 19th, 2011 at 10:00AM: Stretching for over 90 feet in length, and weighing more than 180 metric tons, the blue whale is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest animal that has ever lived. The creatures were hunted to near extinction in the early part of the 20th century, but appear to be making a comeback now.
A kayaker at Redondo Beach, California recently had the rare opportunity to see one of these magnificent ...

Aug 16th, 2011 at 12:30PM: I woke up early one morning last week and realized that August 15th would mark two years since I arrived in Seattle. Normally I wouldn't take note of such a thing, given that I tend to move with the frequency of a fugitive. Staying in one place just isn't in my nature.
But here I was, 24 months into life in Seattle, and of the many things I'd yet to do, I hadn't: been to the San Juan Islands ...

While the Sierra de Toloño offers some amazing trails and views, the most alluring sights I've seen in the Basque region are along its coastline.
The coast of northeast Spain and southwest France along the Bay of Biscay is part of the Basque heartland. Inland villages played a key role in keeping Basque culture alive, but it's the ports--Bilbao, San Sebastian, and many smaller ...

May 3rd, 2011 at 8:00AM: For many travelers, whale-spotting is a moving, and sometimes life altering, experience. Those massive, yet graceful, creatures are unlike anything else on Earth, and getting the opportunity to see one up close is an experience that shouldn't be missed. One of the more common species, the humpback whale, have recently been spotted in record numbers off the coast of Antarctica, in a display that ...

Feb 21st, 2011 at 3:45AM: Over 100 pilot whales are dead after a stranding on Stewart Island in New Zealand. Discovered by tourists Saturday about half the beached whales were already dead. New Zealand Department of Conservation staff euthanized the rest.
"About half of the whales were still alive when we arrived," said biodiversity manager Brent Beaven.
The group (pod) of whales were the latest to die in a series of ...

Don't hate me but I ate whale meat. More than once and from more than one species (cringe).
I didn't do it for the sake of boasting--I've eaten whale before in other countries. I did it because when you get invited over for dinner at somebody's house in Greenland and they serve you whale, you just eat it and smile and say, "Qujanaq"(thank you).
As a guest in Greenland, I was first served a ...

Aug 1st, 2010 at 11:30AM: For the third time in the past decade a Princess Cruises luxury ship has struck and killed a whale in the waters off the coast of Alaska. That latest incident occurred last Tuesday evening just south of Juneau, where the ship the Sapphire Princess apparently hit the creature, whose corpse was discovered attached to the hull on Wednesday morning. Last year, the same ship arrived in Vancouver ...

Jul 22nd, 2010 at 1:00PM: The goal of a whale watching trip is self-explanatory: you're hoping to get up close and personal with some whales. But that isn't always a good thing. Sometimes whale watchers get more than they bargained for - like when a confused whale leaps out of the water and falls directly onto your boat. That's exactly what happened to Paloma Werner on a recent whale watching trip near Cape Town, South ...

According to the Daily News, big butts are very popular this summer. From Kim Kardashian to Serena Williams, all the stars are sporting delicious derrieres. It's about time that the world got on board with Sir Mix-A-Lot's way of thinking. The toosh has been so overlooked through the years while breasts and legs get all the attention. But this is the beginning of the business end!
It's no ...

No one ocean person is more ready to fight on its behalf than Paul Watson. Each season for the past several he has sailed his ship the Steve Irwin to the icy waters off Antarctica to harass Japanese whalers, who insist on continuing their hunt despite international protest and pressure, using "science" as their lone defense. The popular Animal Planet series "Whale Wars," filmed aboard the ship ...

Nov 9th, 2009 at 1:30PM: When most people think of a "safari" they think of hiking through the bush of South Africa or trekking through the jungles of Costa Rica in search of exotic animals native to the region.
But here in the US we have plenty of our own wild animals to see and going "on safari" here doesn't have to mean doing one of those drive-though "wild animal" parks where non-native animals like zebras and ...

Aug 19th, 2009 at 10:00AM: Ever wonder what the big deal is about whale watching? Well then, my guess is that you haven't been whale watching.
Whale watching is a serene and eco-friendly activity. Actually seeing a whole darn whale in its own habitat is truly astonishing, and will fill you with wonder. What's more, whales will often "play" with whale watchers -- they know you're watching, and it turns out they're kind of ...

Jul 28th, 2009 at 11:00AM: On Sunday, the Vancouver Sun reported that the Princess Cruises ship that arrived in port the day before brought with it something unexpected, and a little disturbing. Stuck to the bow of the boat was a 21 meter (about 69 feet) long dead fin whale.
The Sapphire Princess was returning from Alaska and most likely picked up the whale north of Vancouver Island, as fin whales, which have been ...
