Mar 8th, 2013 at 11:00AM: Planning a trip to Paraguay? Don't know where Paraguay is? Haven't heard of it? I feel you; it's not the most well known destination (psst, it's in South America). But I'm headed there in a few weeks for Gadling, and until yesterday, the biggest stressor in my life was obtaining my Paraguayan visa.
For the intrepid few who venture to Paraguay, the rewards are many– rich indigenous culture ...

"I need to include a prepaid, self-addressed Priority envelope to get my passport sent back," I said to the young man at the mail counter.
"Oh, are you sending this to the passport processing center?" he asked looking up from his computer.
"Um, no ... the Embassy of Afghanistan."
His response to my answer was silence, but I could see the wheels turning in his head, wondering why in ...

Dec 13th, 2011 at 11:30AM: It's a favorite ritual for many travelers to leaf through their passport (often while waiting in an immigration line), reminiscing on each stamp and the destination it represents. Oct 24th, 2011 at 9:00AM: As my new baby girl was born in a foreign country, getting a passport was a necessity for her to even return home to America. Though Vera was born in Turkey, she's an American citizen by virtue of her parents' citizenship and entitled to a US passport. For Americans born outside the country, the US consulate issues a Report of Birth Abroad that acts as an official birth certificate and proof of US ...

Getting to Minsk seemed like a complicated process from the very beginning. The Belarusian entrance requirements were one thing; as it turned out, there were delays, unexpected developments, and last-minute machinations on top of the basic visa application process.
Prospective US visitors need to do several things before visiting Belarus: obtain an invitation from a recognized travel ...

Aug 17th, 2011 at 12:00PM: We live in an increasingly borderless world and we have access to many countries that were closed (or non-existent) 20 years ago. As reported earlier this week, Americans are especially lucky with access to 169 countries visa free. Still, there are still many countries that Americans need advance visas to visit. Visa applications and processing services can cost several hundreds of dollars and ...

Visa-free travel is easy travel. Procuring visas takes time, energy, and money, and is beyond debate a pain for frequent travelers. The erection of visa barriers responds to a number of factors, though it can be said without too many qualifications that the citizens of rich countries tend to have a much easier time accessing the world visa-free than do the citizens of poor countries.
The ...

Jul 22nd, 2011 at 11:00AM: Probably one of the most heart-breaking stories we hear is that of travelers who have done their homework, planned their travels well with the exception that they forgot all about a visa that may be required for entry to a country they are visiting. It's easy enough to check at various websites including the U.S. Department of State's site that lists worldwide entry requirements. Still, travelers ...

Oct 25th, 2010 at 2:00PM: Tourist visas and their respective extensions are a matter of hot discussion among travelers in Southeast Asia. Many countries only issues visas for 30, 60 or 90 days, but the long term traveler often has reason to stay beyond. As a result, many simply cross the border into another country, stay for a bit and turn right around, earning another tourist visa on the inbound journey. Some even riskier ...

Aug 21st, 2010 at 10:00AM: As you've read here on Gadling, tourists planning to visit the U.S. will soon have to start paying a $14 fee. $10 of that fee goes into a fund to help promote tourism to the U.S. - and yes, we totally understand how insane it is to ask tourists coming here to pay to promote coming here.
That said, there is a way to avoid this fee for the next 24 months - simply apply for an ESTA visa before ...

One of the best things about life as an expat in Turkey is easy access to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, with many previously far-flung destinations only a few hours' flight away. I might not plan a week-long vacation in, say, Kosovo, but if I can be there for Friday happy hour and home Monday morning, why not?
