This week I went aboard Virgin America's inaugural flight from San Francisco to Toronto; and having visited Toronto only once before when I was young, I didn't have very high expectations for Canada's largest city. On this visit, I took the time to explore some of the outlying neighborhoods (Kensington Market) and cultural districts that really give Toronto a sense of flavor and diversity, and ...

Whoa. That was the first thing that came to mind when I looked at Flickr user Bryson Gilbert's photo of City Hall in Toronto. It's not just the vertigo-inducing angle - I also love the choice of black and white, which accentuates the curves, shadows and lines of the buildings. It almost looks like the facades of these two structures are the wings of some giant insect, preparing to take flight. ...

May 29th, 2010 at 1:30PM: If you don't live in Vienna, you might consider moving there.
A new survey lists the top 50 cities for quality of life and Vienna comes out as number one. The survey, conducted by Mercer, a human resources consultancy firm, looked at criteria such as infrastructure, economy, housing, recreation, personal and press freedom, and education. Vienna certainly scores high in all that, plus it has ...

Mar 11th, 2010 at 8:29AM: Once upon a time, the world's food capitals were a mere few well-known locales like Paris, New York, and Bangkok. All the action (and the eyes, and the forks) were focused there.
Recently, though, many areas of the world have expanded and improved both their menus and their talents in the kitchen, resulting in far more places staking their claims in the classy world of quality dining. ...

Feb 5th, 2010 at 8:30AM: Forget chocolate and flowers - how about treating your loved one to sex in a restaurant bathroom?
You'll need to travel to Toronto for the experience, but Mildred's Temple Kitchen has announced that they'll encourage any of their guests to use their bathrooms for some Valentine's day nooky.

Jan 2nd, 2010 at 1:00PM: We've all been there - you get to your seat, and someone else has already taken ownership of the armrest, which includes part of your space. In most cases, a quick smile and "hi" is enough to create a mutual understanding on sharing the one and a half inches of precious space.
Sadly, not everyone shares that concept - like 31 year old Khodar Ahmad. This Toronto man was on his way to Frankfurt ...

More snow is expected for today in the Boston area. I've been trying to capture snow with as much impact as possible, but I haven't been happy with the results.
This picture from PDPhotography taken in Toronto really gave me a chill. Now I'm off to try to re-create the look. If I could just find a bus around here.
Here's hoping you have a wonderful new year. Why not make it a New Year's ...

Oct 19th, 2009 at 7:00PM: I've always loved photographs of signage, but I've rarely been able to capture an image that I liked -- it's trickier than it looks. I'm loving this shot captured by Bryson Gilbert, however -- the light and colour so perfectly convey the mood of a fun night out in Toronto. Well done. If you've got some great travel shots you'd love to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. ...

Having just come from the concrete jungle that is New York City, I've come to appreciate the urban landscapes that only large cities can offer. When the sky opens up in bright blue above the towering skyscrapers I have to pinch myself at the great modern progress that the world has made in just a century. There's something really grand and angular about cities that make them perfect inspiration ...
