Nine US airports have been approved for charter flights to Cuba, Reuters reported this morning. The Cuban travel agency Havanatur Celimar made the announcement on Friday.
The US government forbids commercial flights between the United States and Cuba, so all air travel between the two countries has to proceed on charter planes. The Obama Administration has already removed all restrictions ...

Some say that romance is a lost art - but it's not. It's just hiding, waiting to be uncovered in some of the most beautiful places around the globe. Whether you are trying to show that special someone that they truly are special, making a proposal, or rekindling the flame you once had with your spouse, setting the stage is your first step to success. Whether you are searching for the perfect ...

Apr 26th, 2010 at 8:00AM: A Brooklyn guy was faced with the worst of scenarios. Coming through customs on a return trip from Puerto Rico, he was cuffed in San Juan. He was accused of transporting child pornography, because a copy of the DVD "Little Lupe the Innocent" was found in his bags. Of course, Carlos Simon-Timmerman claimed his innocence, so in his mind at least, he was staring down two decades in prison for ...

Formerly a Holiday Inn (and long before that, a 60's era tennis club and hotel), the Verdanza Hotel in Puerto Rico underwent major renovations as it transitioned from chain to independent hotel. The local ownership remained the same, but the decor, attitude, and commitment to the environment is all new.
The vibe here is young - both the GM and the chef are the youngest to hold those ...

Dec 8th, 2009 at 3:00PM: There's a new hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. On Friday, the Verdanza Hotel opened its doors, offering an upscale urban-inspired experience ... but only a few steps from the beach. It's not far from the Isla Verde tourism district, so you'll have plenty of access. And, the 222-room hotel (with 20 suites) boasts three restaurants and a pastry shop. Look for some personalized touches at the Verdanza ...

Nov 12th, 2009 at 12:00PM: No matter who you are or how fancy your hotel is, inviting strangers to your room is a risky business. Just ask Robert J. Anello, a New York Lawyer who was staying at the lovely Ritz-Carlton, San Juan in Puerto Rico's posh Isla Verde district (shown). He was tied up in his room with lamp cords and a necktie just before dawn on Monday, and had $800 cash and his two cell phones stolen.

Anyone looking for a taste Caribbean colonial charm should head for Puerto Rico's Old San Juan. It's an area with loads of atmosphere - brightly colored pastel mansions, cobblestone streets, and a surprising street art scene. I particularly liked the bold colors and gritty charm of this photo in Old San Juan by Flickr user robertrexdotcom. It reminded me of my visit last year, wandering the ...

Sep 24th, 2009 at 6:00PM: This panoramic picture taken in San Juan, Puerto Rico by robertrex365 is a perfect example of an HDR shot that hasn't been overdone to the point of looking like a scene from The Lord of the Rings. Robert is taking part in Project 365!, which is a Flickr group that is committed to taking one good picture every day. Hopefully Robert hasn't peaked with this shot. Are you a Flickr user who'd like to ...

Have a question of your own? Ask away! Darren from Engadget asks: Hey Kent! Just got back from a LIR -> ATL -> RDU trip, and I thought of a question. When the plane (we were on a 737) is just seconds from touching down on the ...

Jun 17th, 2009 at 9:00AM: Fort San Cristóbal, as I mentioned in my article "Old San Juan - Beautiful Views and What to Do," is a must-see on any trip to Old San Juan. Even if you think history is kind of a yawner, the views will astound you -- just the color of the stone is visually luscious enough to charm you. And since we're on the topic, here's a quick history lesson for you. I'll try to make it fun. ...

Jan 14th, 2009 at 11:30AM: Summary: One of the frequent knocks on the Caribbean is that many of the islands (not all) are nothing more than receptacles for tourists. That there's no real dynamic culture and sense of place. But this statement also ignores the fact that millions of Americans head to the Caribbean each year, and many of them are looking for nothing more than a cheap vacation with a beautiful beach and a ...

Jan 8th, 2009 at 10:30AM: I just got back from spending a week visiting a friend in Puerto Rico. Considering I am tan, well-rested and had perfect weather, I guess it was a successful trip. But it was almost derailed from the very beginning when US Airways lost my luggage.
You see, I was forced to check my luggage because the overhead compartments were full. When I asked the US Airways representative why people in our ...

May 30th, 2008 at 4:00PM: Although, finding deals are still on our minds (poor Iva in Moscow is having little luck), food and drink has been one topic of interest this week.
Iva, for example, has found some solace in the vodka. She's discovered loads of it, and all brands are not the same.

May 27th, 2008 at 10:00AM: I finished the last Paris trip four hours before my wife Linda and the kids would arrive in Boston on a Lufthansa flight from Germany. I debated waiting for them at the airport, but I knew Linda would be especially thrilled if she didn't have to go to the store on the way home to pick up some milk for her morning tea. So I drove up to New Hampshire, picked up some milk and fresh fruit, dropped off ...

Apr 19th, 2008 at 11:00PM: Vacationing in any foreign place takes a little bit of acclimating to get used to the bar scene. You have to know the right bars and locations to go to avoid being labeled as a tourist or getting ripped off. For example, my friend Ered always loves going to "Wine Bars" when we're in foreign countries -- but if something has WINE BAR written in English on the front facade, it's catering to ...

Apr 15th, 2008 at 9:20AM: This past weekend I had an opportunity to experience the many pleasures of Puerto Rico's Old San Juan neighborhood. Ringed by massive stone walls and the imposing El Morro fortress, the historic heart of this former Spanish colonial capital provides a virtual feast for the senses. As I meandered the area's narrow cobblestone streets, I passed by block after block of majestic, pastel-colored ...

May 15th, 2007 at 3:36PM: Guess what? There actually are people who don't like islands. I know, I know, it seems crazy to me, too, but these are probably the same people who dislike ice cream, tax refunds, and heaven. For the rest of us... we'll always have islands.
T&L recently compiled a list of their favorite islands. As you'd expect, the list includes some real hum-dingers:
Santorini, Greece
