Just past the eastern terminus of the Tioga Pass, the entryway to Yosemite National Park, is the quietly beautiful Mono Lake. The area is unique due to its salinity and eerie tufa rock formations that jut out from the water, which give it a completely unreal appearance. Flickr user Pacheco took this amazing photo of the moonrise after a two-day mission to get the perfect ...

Last year's Superstorm Sandy devastated much of the East Coast, especially around the mid-Atlantic coastline. New York and New Jersey beaches were hit hard, with scores of houses and even towns wiped out. Many places are rebounding, such as Coney Island, which opened officially for the season in April. Today's Photo of the Day was taken this weekend in New Jersey by Flickr ...

Every year, Buddha's Birthday is marked in Korea by a sea of draped lanterns. The holiday itself is not until May 17 this year, but that has not stopped the festivities from starting early. Most streets surrounding Buddhist temples have a colorful array of lanterns strung from their lampposts. The temples themselves often feature an entire canopy created by a rainbow of lanterns. And as part of ...

Today is Independence Day in Romania, a country most known for the Transylvania region and its implied ties to the legend of Dracula. It's often overlooked in a traveler's typical European Grand Tour, even among eastern European countries. If you have the time to explore, you'll find absolutely gorgeous country villages, cheap and good-quality wine and beer, and evidently, bad ass old men. From ...

You can find many things at local markets: organic vegetables, artisan cheese, perfumes, wine, textiles, souvenirs ... the list goes on. A look into the tastes and smells of a place, markets are a traveler's jackpot.
But market souvenirs come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes you find the kind of things you might just get pulled over for in customs on the way home. Like this selection ...

May 5th, 2013 at 9:00AM: The very name "Death Valley" can conjure mental images of an empty, desolate wasteland that stretches for miles on end. In our mind's eye, it is easy to envision the place as a lifeless expanse of land that has little to offer anyone who is unfortunate enough to visit the place. In reality, that misconception couldn't be further from the truth and Death Valley National Park can be a rewarding and ...

This Photo of the Day, titled "Brighten Up Your Day," comes from Gadling Flickr pool member The Delhi Way and looked like an appropriate photo for this time of year when Spring showers are happening in many places
Taken in Delhi India, The Delhi Way says of the image: "One can find the most eclectic things in Delhi. These beautifully embroidered, vibrant umbrellas while being practical, can ...

In the Scottish Highlands, on Loch Shiel, sits Glenfinnan, a small village with an amazing view. Darby Sawchuck took this incredibly lit photo of the loch, really evoking the lush green of the landscape and the beautifully wide valley. Despite it being clear that this region sees plenty of rain, it would be worth weathering through just to see this sight when you wake up in the morning.

The Museum of Photography in Berlin has just opened an exhibition of nude photos from the turn of the last century.
"The Naked Truth and More Besides Nude Photography around 1900" brings together hundreds of nude photos from an era we normally associate with old-fashioned prudery. In fact, nude photos were incredibly popular at that time. They had existed since the earliest days of the ...

Public art can take many forms: a mural, a street performer, even a tank as "sculpture." Then there is the many forms of graffiti. How do you differentiate between art and vandalism? This photo of a broken down Muni bus was taken by Flickr user JRodmanJr in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood, presumably in the junkyard. It's hard to say when the bus acquired all of its "artwork," perhaps some ...

Cherry blossoms mark the true beginning of spring, along with the arrival of glorious sunshine, refreshing breezes and all around spectacular picnic weather. Within Seoul, the most talked about place to see the blossoms is on Yeouido, a large island on the Han River where many of the tallest skyscrapers in Korea are located.
Yeouido's Spring Flower Festival, which centers around the ...

Today is May Day, when the world celebrates the struggles and sacrifices of the common worker. Like this cheese seller in Tupiza, Bolivia, photographed by Gadling's resident cheese expert Laurel Miller. After some hard hours making her product, this woman comes to the market hoping to sell it all before the day is through. She uses a plastic bag on a stick to keep the flies away.

Utah is one of my favorite escapes. There's something about sitting on a slab of redrock and watching a black sky dotted with stars. You're in the middle of nowhere, alone, surrounded by silence, overpowered by the feeling of grandiose canyons.
Flickr user djurma captures exactly that in this nighttime photo of Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. You can feel that stillness just by ...

We here at Gadling are airplane nerds. We take pictures of the view from the gate, our inflight meals, and even take portraits in the bathroom. Even my daughter has become an airplane nerd before the age of 2, stopping in her tracks and pointing to the sky at the sight of a plane flying over. Naturally, this Instagram shot caught my eye, for the view from the wing of runway traffic at Jakarta ...

The Faroe Islands are a bit too remote to be on many people's bucket list and that's a shame. Halfway between Scotland and Iceland in the windy north Atlantic, they offer a rugged beauty equal to any adventure travel destination.
This shot from user kanelstrand from Gadling's Flickr pool was taken early one morning after some rain. The mixture of light and shadow, the deep color of the sea ...
