Come on in, the water's - well, it's freezing. (Seriously, the girl in this photo is nuts.) But that isn't keeping me away from my first trip to the breathtaking shores of Lake Michigan, also known as the country's Third Coast. Though I've lived in Indiana most of my life, I have always passed over Lake Michigan for the spun-sugar shores of Florida's ...

May 21st, 2013 at 10:00AM: Since when did camping become expensive? I live in Chicago and have spent a ridiculous amount of time researching places to camp over the Memorial Day weekend in the last two weeks. If I had planned ahead, booking a campsite would be quick and easy but we tend not to plan very far in advance, which makes travel during holidays complicated and sometimes expensive.
We wanted to camp at Devil's ...

Beyond travel, we're also big music fans here at Gadling; largely because music is a great way to get to know a place. This month happens to be Public Radio Music Month and we're teaming up with NPR to bring you exclusive interviews from NPR music specialists around the country. We'll be learning about local music culture and up and coming new regional artists, so be sure to follow along ...

Growing up in Boston and later Tucson, I grew up going on beach vacations in New England and California. It wasn't until I started dating my husband a decade ago that I discovered America's "Third Coast" (the Great Lakes, for our purposes, though some call the Gulf states the Third Coast) in the Midwest. Visiting my in-laws in St. Joseph, Michigan, I was amazed to see that you don't need to go ...

Aug 10th, 2012 at 9:00AM: Earlier this week, the destroyer USS Edson sailed into the harbor of Bay City, Michigan, to the cheers of an expectant crowd. As Art Daily reports, it will become part of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum.
This museum's primary purpose will be to showcase the USS Edson, which saw duty from 1958 to 1988. She saw action in the Vietnam War and was shelled by Vietcong land forces.
The USS ...

Jul 20th, 2012 at 8:00AM: Michigan's Upper Peninsula is an often overlooked travel destination. Sandwiched between three of the Great Lakes, the U.P. is a remote and rugged wilderness that features hundreds of miles of trail, incredibly dense forests and more solitude than anyone could ever ask for. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the options for hiking, camping and backpacking, while other visitors will enjoy the scenic ...

US Highway 2, through Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is pristine. This stretch of road is so relatively far out of the way that its untouched beauty is its main attraction. This trip is 290 miles. You'll want to stop off and take a dip every time you see the waters of Lake Michigan glistening beyond the birch trees, and so you should. That's what I did when I drove across this portion of Highway ...

Apr 3rd, 2012 at 3:30PM: India's threatened tiger population, once on the verge of extinction, has increased by 20 percent in the last four years. As the Albany Times Union reports, wildlife officials and naturalists report most tigresses in the central India reserves either have or will have their cubs soon. This information makes 2012 a good year for eco-travel to India.

Mar 2nd, 2012 at 8:00AM: A frozen lake on Michigan's Upper Peninsula seems an unlikely place to hold a world championship event – particularly in February. Yet that is exactly where I found myself this past weekend as I watched more than 40 competitors from around the globe zip to and fro across the ice propelled by nothing more than the wind.
I made the trip to St. Ignace, a small town located on the banks of ...

A young female employee went straight to the police after she claims she was assaulted in Tiwari's office on her first day of work as a housekeeper. Since then, three other employees and an additional woman have come ...

U.S. Rising: Emerging Voices in post-9/11 America runs from September 8-11 and is a series of forums and events both in Detroit and Dearborn. On the actual anniversary of September 11, the museum ...

Aug 2nd, 2011 at 4:00PM: Sure, we've been occasionally lured-in to visit a new destination due to a cheeky tourism campaign, or two -- guilty as charged. There's nothing as reassuring, though, as seeing the citizens of a city band together to proclaim to the world, 'hey world, my city is great!' And we can't help but notice the chutzpah overflowing in the state of Michigan.
Over the last year Michigan's citizens, ...

Outside downtown Detroit, in Dearborn, there's a museum filled with airplanes and cars and farm implements and the most outlandish house ever conceived. Somehow, the bric a brac works, brought together as The Henry Ford Museum, an institution less focused on a particular moment or a particular discipline that the very idea of American innovation, financed by the inventor's healthy ...

Chef Steven Grostick has never worked in a kitchen outside of Michigan. It's a remarkable accomplishment in an industry focused on apprenticeships in France, Italy, Japan, on jumping from stove to stove in New York City, on doing a turn at a resort in Arizona. Staying in-state has let him amass a network of purveyors, and he's calling in favors from as many as he can at his year-old restaurant ...

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a favorite place of mine. Desolate and beautiful, the U.P. is an ideal getaway destination. The coastline of Michigan's U.P. has a certain kind of shine--they kind that makes me want to build a cabin and never leave... except during the winters.
Featured above are 3 kayaking friends using a sail rig on their kayak. Launching off from a clean sandy beach, this ...

Jan 21st, 2011 at 10:00AM: If you're unclear on what a whale burp is, you're not the only one. Often misconstrued to be connected in some way to whales (and I wonder why that is... ), whale burps are actually purely environmental--no whales necessary. They don't look too unlike rubberband balls. Except they're made up of pine needles, bird shells, twigs, and other natural debris... as well as a disconcerting unnatural item: ...
