From music festivals to cultural showcases to the just plain bizarre, we hope to inspire you to do some festival exploring of your own. Come back each Wednesday for our picks or find them all HERE.

Mar 18th, 2010 at 2:45PM: If you really want to get into the spirit of a cruise, you'll want to participate in any theme parties or special events on board.
Before departing, contact the cruise line to find out what will be offered on your cruise. Toga parties require a gown made of bed sheets, of course, while shamrocks and green hats are appropriate for a St. Patrick's celebration. Beads, feathers and masks are in ...

Mar 12th, 2009 at 3:30PM: Before today, I knew of only one other celebration centered on a fish. During the Walleye Drop on New Year's Eve in Port Clinton, Ohio, townsfolk drop a walleye. Not a real walleye--one made out of some sort of fiberglass material. Here's another case of fish frivolity. This Mad Culture video depicts the Burial of the Sardine in Madrid. The celebration, attended by folks of all ages, is connected ...

Mar 6th, 2009 at 6:00PM: Yes, yes, yes. It's 70 degrees where I'm sitting. People have seemed to be feeling chipper in Columbus everywhere I've gone today. I'm ready to head outside again, but before I do, here are some Gadling gems that you might have missed.
Brenda's post Eddie Aikau and the Hokule'a voyage gives the back story to the term "Eddie Would Go" and news of the upcoming 'round the world voyage of the ...

Mar 3rd, 2009 at 11:00AM:
We've been taking a look recently at some of the fun that went down this past week in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and many of our fellow travel bloggers have been doing the same. National Geographic's Janelle Nanos found herself in New Orleans for the festivities, and in the midst of all the good times stumbled upon some partiers who just might be her magazine's biggest fans.
As Janelle ...

It's Mardi Gras this week, and New Orleans has been living it up in honor of one the city's most famous holidays. It's not just Louisiana residents that are getting in on the action however. As Videogum reports, none other than Val "Iceman" Kilmer was on hand to help celebrate, decked out in a white skin-tight leotard and full Mardi Gras "king" regalia. Mr. Kilmer apparently claimed the ...

Feb 23rd, 2009 at 10:30AM: Here's a fun fact: Nearly 400 people were arrested in New Orleans this past weekend, forced to chill out at central lockup after being charged with public drunkenness, lewd contact, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace and a variety of other misdemeanors that are probably par for the course during Mardi Gras time. New Orleans Times-Picayune spent the weekend looking at mug shots. Sadly, the ...

Feb 17th, 2009 at 4:00PM: Carnival enjoys many interpretations around the world, yet there are common threads uniting them. By and large these are parties that feature a great deal of tradition, costumes, parades and food and if they seem a little of the hook some time, well what do expect from people preparing for 40 days of fasting? Here's a look at a few Carnival celebrations around the world. United States Obviously ...

Feb 9th, 2009 at 2:30PM: Air New Zealand is once again flying their pink party plane for the 2009 Sydney Mardi Gras. We've covered the party plane before, but it is clearly a success, as they keep bringing it back for more fun! Tickets for the flight start at $978, and include the flight from San Francisco to Auckland, and a 3 1/2 hour party flight from Auckland to Sydney. The party flight includes cocktails, canapes, ...

Jan 30th, 2008 at 11:00AM: Justin presented a handy guide to how to dress for Mardi Gras, stay stylish, but leave your good clothes at home. If you're interested in really standing out in a crowd, consider a balloon dress. I'd plan carefully what you have on underneath since I can't imagine an outfit less practical. But isn't this fun? I was on the lookout for these when I wandered onto the Balloon Twister's Convention and ...

Jan 29th, 2008 at 2:40PM: New Orleans, I love ya, but you're a dirty city -- especially in the French Quarter during Mardi Gras. In fact, I've ruined a couple pairs of pants thanks to the "drunken sludge" on Bourbon street (right). After my first few trips to Mardi Gras, I got smart and went on a shopping spree at the thrift store before heading down, and now it's a tradition. Here's my yearly shopping list: A few pairs of ...

Jan 29th, 2008 at 9:40AM: I was lucky enough to live in Southern Louisiana for a few years, and I had a blast at several Mardi Gras parades. But for those looking to bring the kids or get away from the debauchery in the French Quarter, consider heading one hour south of New Orleans to the town of Houma. Houma is a smaller city, about one hour's drive south of New Orleans [see map], in Terrebonne Parish. It also hosts one ...

Jan 28th, 2008 at 8:30AM: Despite it's relaxed, party atmosphere, the city of New Orleans has laws -- even during Mardi Gras. Further, the city has a concentration of NOPD officers, ATF, and undercover police in the French Quarter during Carnival to enforce these laws. If you're heading to the Big Easy for the Mardi Gras, here are a few things you might be tempted to do, but should consider otherwise. And remember: just ...

Jan 26th, 2008 at 4:45PM: I just made a last-minute decision to head down to New Orleans next weekend for Mardi Gras. This will be my 7th Big Easy Mardi Gras in the last 8 years. Unfortunately, I missed it last year -- my first miss in 6 straight -- and felt that my attraction to the city was slowly fading. But as this year's festivities grew closer, I found myself missing it even more. Luckily my trusty Mardi Gras pal ...

Sep 26th, 2007 at 4:58PM: I'm only in my 20s, but there have been a few places where the party-hard attitudes of locals and visitors alike have left me feeling more like 87 than 27. I like have fun as much as the next gal, but I'm not one to stay up drinking all night and into most of the next morning too. I need my rest, and plus, I am not good with hangovers. But nonetheless, I've been to a few excellent parties and made ...

Sep 15th, 2007 at 10:30PM: Bring on the feather boas, shimmery eye makeup, and stiletto heels. And if you want to sleep, maybe some sleeping pills, because Air New Zealand's gay-themed flight from San Francisco to Sydney promises to be 14 hours of nonstop fun.
The flight is scheduled to depart February 25 for the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney, Australia, which is one of the world's most well-attended gay events. ...

Aug 28th, 2007 at 8:30AM: There's more to Labor Day than escaping for the weekend -- most cities offer some sort of celebration. If you've decided to stick around town, here's a small sampling of the odd, the crazy, and the large festivals across the country. Southern Decadence Known as the "Gay Mardi Gras," this New Orleans celebration starts partying the Wednesday before Labor Day and doesn't stop until the Tuesday ...

Jul 31st, 2007 at 8:25PM: Most of us have gone a bit overboard on the local beer or spirits when in another country. My worst experience was in Sydney, where my two friends and I found ourselves with a 4L box of wine that we bought for $10 and refused to haul any further on our way up the coast. We had one night to drink it, and it just happened to be Mardi Gras.We finished it all right. But most of my share ended up ...

May 1st, 2007 at 3:30PM: New Orleans is one of my favorite towns of all time. It's like a second home to me; there's no other city I've visited more without actually living there. It's unfortunate that I've never been during Jazzfest, though, because our sister-site, Blogging New Orleans, sure makes it look like a blast. They've spent the past weekend partaking in all of the festivities, and meticulously documenting every ...

Feb 13th, 2007 at 2:40PM: Mardi Gras is in exactly one week, which means that -- unless you're fabulously attractive -- it's probably too late to join a krewe this year. That said, I understand the the Krewe of Barkus only requires prospective krewers to register their dog and pay $50 on the day of the parade. Krewe of Barkus? What's a krewe? A krewe is a group of people who help to ensure that merry-makers actually make ...
