Jul 3rd, 2011 at 4:00PM:
With Independence Day arriving tomorrow, many Texans are wondering just how to celebrate the 4th of July without fireworks. The sparkling display has been canceled this year due to the extreme drought in the area. I recently published a piece on Alternatives to Fireworks for those of you afflicted by firework-less regions. My favorite suggestion in the piece, cheesy as it may sound, was a ...

America's Independence Day on July 4th is traditionally celebrated by many with trips to the beach, picnics, barbecues and all-day fun capped off with a fireworks display. It's a patriotic holiday for sure and one of the most expensive times of the year to travel commercially, second only to December holidays. So how about a road trip? Here are the top ten fireworks displays in the United ...

Jun 27th, 2011 at 4:30PM:
It's been 35 years since the city of Austin canceled its July 4th fireworks display, but due to the extreme drought in Travis County, Austin's fiery light show has been canceled. Because of the hot, dry, and windy conditions in this section of Texas, the Travis County Fire Marshal decided not to approve any permits for fireworks throughout the county. "We just can't take that chance", said ...

A friend of mine, Vishaka, was born and raised in in Chennai, India. She has now married another friend of mine, Keith, an American, and they live full-time in Indiana. But every so often, once or twice a year it seems, they make the trip back to Chennai to spend time with family and to keep their ties to Chennai's culture tight.
This shot captures Vishaka setting off her first firecracker ...

Feb 8th, 2011 at 2:15PM: When I was in high school, I got to know a sweet and charming exchange student from Germany named Linda. We hung out together and I did my best to show her around Seattle before she had to go home six weeks later. I regretted not having the opportunity to get to know her ten months earlier when she first came to the U.S.
Five years went by, and we would write an occasional letter. She'd tell me ...

Aug 17th, 2010 at 5:30PM: When 29 year old Paul Jones celebrated the 4th of July in Kansas, he ended up with a large bag of unused fireworks. Instead of discarding them, he kept them in a bag and brought them home back to the United Kingdom. In doing so, he was able to keep them in his carry-on luggage, and even passed the bag of explosives through the Kansas airport x-ray machine, in plain sight of officers.
It wasn't ...

Happy birthday, America. What better way to celebrate this great day than with some fireworks? While we've seen plenty of stellar fireworks photos over the years, we've got to hand it to Flickr user ohad*, who captured this quirky shot during a visit to Delray Beach, Florida. True, the fireworks in question were for New Year's. But no matter, the feel of the image is great - the slow shutter ...

Jun 7th, 2010 at 4:30PM: Walt Disney World's newest fireworks show, the Summer Nightastic! Fireworks Spectacular, opened this weekend at the Magic Kingdom.
The show replaces the popular "Wishes" nighttime entertainment at Walt Disney World for a limited summer run.
When I went to see the show on its opening night, I was worried. I'm a sucker for fireworks, but I was such a big fan of the "Wishes" show and soundtrack ...

Jan 28th, 2010 at 5:00PM: Looks like the people of Chi-town will have to come up with their own fireworks extravaganza this year. Breaking news from the Chicago Tribune reports that Chicago's traditional July 3 Grant Park fireworks display is canceled.
"I would say we're doing it to be fiscally responsible, because we have to be," said Megan McDonald, director of the Mayor's Office of Special Events. "We're also doing ...

Robert Rex (robertrexdotcom) has been on a tear lately, uploading pictures into Gadling's Flickr collection. He took this picture last week at Disney World in Orlando. The slow shutter needed to capture the Castle makes for a nice flow to the fireworks.
Well done Robert and thanks for the contributions!

Considering this exhausting schedule, festivals and holidays are special times - a chance to kick back, relax and let loose. In Myanmar's Shan State, one of the most important of these festivities is the annual Taunggyi ...

Sep 6th, 2009 at 6:00PM: Taking good photos of fireworks is no easy feat. The darkness, rapid movement and distance all conspire to confuse your average digital camera. As a result, many fireworks photos come out blurry and disappointing. All the more reason then, for selecting today's fabulous fireworks shot from Flickr user Aseem01, who caught this colorful burst in Ota-ku, Japan. Fun fact: in Japan, they call ...

Jan 23rd, 2009 at 5:30PM: January 26 comes with two huge events this year: the lunar new year (or Chinese New Year, for those of you lion dance and firework lovers) and the first solar eclipse of the year! The lunar new year of the earth ox is the second zodiac of the cycle. It is the craziest time to travel to China this time of year, and unless you have a really important reason to be in Shanghai or Beijing or you ...

Sep 4th, 2008 at 1:30PM: This picture taken by jrodmanjr of a fireworks display in San Francisco really caught my eye. Notice how the bright lights coming from the Bay Bridge create a bit of a vignette around the picture. The low light makes it tough to get a super crisp shot in these situations, but jrodmanjr did a nice job with this one. Every picture in his photostream could qualify for a Photo of the Day! Are you a ...
