Jul 14th, 2009 at 8:30AM: We've mentioned other deals recently on Emirates flights, but when it comes to flights to Africa (read: typically expensive) this one is worth circling in red ink. For today and tomorrow only, the first 500 people who book a flight from the US to Africa get $500 off Business Class airfare, or $150 off Economy Class airfare. Emirates offers travel to 16 African cities on sale: Abidjan, Accra, ...

Jun 1st, 2009 at 3:00PM: If you've got any transoceanic travel coming up in the next few months, today is a great day to buy tickets. Why, you ask? Because Emirates, one of the best airlines on the planet, is having a one day sale where they're taking $100 off any online booking. This could be your opportunity to try out one of the hottest carriers for a discounted price, or maybe get $100 back on the primo-expensive ...

Just like Cliff Muskiet, the uniform freak, I have a thing for airline uniforms. I think most flight attendants do. In fact, inside my guestroom closet hangs three different uniform styles from two different airlines. I've saved it all - the pants, the skirts, the dresses, the jackets, the vests, the blouses, the wings, and even the blue tie I snapped around my neck and the epaulets I wore on ...

May 23rd, 2009 at 2:00PM: It was a bad week for Australians, it seems. A naval officer was physically restrained on a flight to London. Not too long after, Matt Carney, a flight attendant from Melbourne, was sentenced to 18 months in jail in England. It was his own fault: he left not one but two(!) notes on a plane to London, "warning" of a bomb. Of course, he was working the flight.
The 23-year-old soon-to-be-former ...

Recently I wrote a post, the hottest trend on the airplane since the mile high club, about something disturbing, yet quite intriguing, that was taking place not just on the airplane, but behind the locked lavatory door at 35,000 feet. Passengers, and I'm talking all kinds of passengers, have been photographing themselves in the bathroom. Alone. Doing what, I don't know. But they look like they're ...

Feb 17th, 2009 at 12:00PM: When we heard that you can shower on the Emirates A380, we were fascinated. The Sydney Morning Herald just published a first-hand account of the showers. Never before has a commercial airplane bathroom been equipped with a shower, and we're okay with that. I mean, what, are we gonna share a communal shower with all the sketchy looking people in coach? With us? This isn't a hostel in Berlin! The ...

Jan 24th, 2009 at 11:30AM: Not content with charging you for water and checked bags, some airlines have discovered the lucrative business of charging for oxygen. Not to worry, most passengers won't run out of oxygen mid-flight when they don't pay, the fees are being charged for those passengers that require oxygen for medical reasons. One passenger had already booked $3,500 in tickets with Emirates when the airline notified ...

Jan 2nd, 2009 at 4:00PM: When your reputation is so bad that you have to make a bet that you'll meet production targets, as Airbus President Tom Enders did, you need to realize that your victory would be break-even for anyone else. The man with the poor track record scored a bottle of champagne by delivering the fourth of four planes to Emirates Airline on time. The total order is for 58, which means Airbus has plenty of ...

Oct 15th, 2008 at 8:30AM: The exclusive Emirates Airline terminal of Dubai International Airport opened its doors yesterday. The airline projects catering to 40 million passengers annually, so an exclusive terminal was a necessity. With all the crazy developments in Dubai over the last few years, each one outdoing the other, it's hard to maintain wow factor. Nevertheless, the new airport wing has been fussed about a lot, ...

Dubai's Emirates Airlines made its inaugural Airbus A380 flight into New York's John F Kennedy airport this past Friday, on what will now become America's first regularly scheduled service with the the new two story jumbo jet.
Gadling was on hand to capture some sweet photos in and around the aircraft, as well as through a press conference detailing the coming Emirates events.
The airline ...

Aug 1st, 2008 at 9:00AM: This Friday will mark the launch of the first regular route in the world on the A380, from Dubai to New York JFK on Emirates Airline. I'm here to talk to Nigel Page, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations (Americas) about this exciting development, the airline's famed "private hotels in the sky," and why we should book a ticket to Dubai. What will be the configuration on the A380, New ...

Jul 23rd, 2008 at 1:00PM: Interesting idea, but it honestly doesn't make much sense to me. Emirates has made a decision to get rid of all paper from the seat pockets on its new Airbus A380. Why? The Economist reports that they're trying to save weight and, hence, fuel. Don't get me wrong. I think throwing out those silly in-flight magazines is a grand idea. However, can you seriously save significant weight by removing, ...

Jul 18th, 2008 at 9:30AM: It's not very often that we Americans are privy to a taste of the Airbus A380, the new supermega jumbo jet that took to the skies last year. Singapore Airlines was the first customer of the aircraft and though they took a quick zip around the United States, as our friend Mr. Cranky talked about last year, most folks have barely seen or heard much about the aircraft -- after all, none of ...

Jul 7th, 2008 at 11:00AM: Do you remember reading about the Hindenburg disaster in history class? You know, that giant blimp that burst into flames in New Jersey in 1936 1937, killing all most of the passengers onboard? For the fledgling blimp tourism industry of the 1930's, that was pretty much the end of the line. However, according to recent news, the blimp is experiencing a resurgence as a trendy new vehicle for the ...

Jun 10th, 2008 at 10:00AM: Emirates finally announced its delivery and route schedule for the new A380s that it's supposed to receive from Airbus later this yea, and New York is on the list of destinations. Starting on August 1st, the Dubai based airline will fly direct from JFK to Dubai three times a week, with routes to San Francisco and Los Angeles to unfurl later in the year. While this isn't the first time that the ...

Apr 11th, 2008 at 11:20AM: I had no idea US pilots were leaving the country in droves. I guess it makes sense. All the bankruptcies in the US airline business, pay cuts, frozen pensions, eroded job security and increases in monthly flight hours are not exactly benefits of the job.
This Time article, titled International Departures, describes the mood among pilots working in the US as not exactly filled with motivation. ...

Mar 25th, 2008 at 1:30PM: Dubai's Emirates airline just started revealing some plans for its A380 configurations. They're the second customer for Airbus's giant airship with delivery slated for later this year. And it looks like they're going to try to beat Singapore Air, the first customer, in sheer ridiculousness of their first class product. With showers. Yes, first class travelers on the new, highly-coveted Emirates ...

Feb 12th, 2008 at 12:00PM: I swear every time I read something about the United Arab Emirates development plans, I am amazed. Last week, I read about Masdar, the greenest city in the world, being built in UAE.
Today, I stumbled upon the plans for Dubailand, the world's biggest amusement park in the making. Currently, the largest amusement park in the world is the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, which is also the ...

Nov 9th, 2007 at 4:30PM: It is easy to be oblivious to events happening in Dubai, simply because of the number of them happening throughout the year. Most of them are hyped in the media to give you nausea (e.g.GITEX), or they are events that you go to just to be seen (e.g.Dubai World Cup). One exception is the Dubai Air Show. This year, it will be held from November 11-15 and will host: 850 exhibitors from over 50 ...

Dec 5th, 2006 at 8:45PM: When the Christmas holiday season rolls around I do my part to spread the holiday cheer by putting cards in the mail to all my loved ones and co-workers from past and present. Since I can't supply the world with gifts I find cards usually suffice for most, but there was one Christmas I remember feeling crushed. A girlfriend of mine who I'd known from high school called me after receiving the card ...
