Jul 8th, 2011 at 10:00AM: To borrow a phrase, Telluride (and I mean this in the best possible way) is a little drinking town with a big ski problem. I've lived there off and on since 2005, and recently returned for a visit for the first time in two years.
Telluride--a former mining town--has never had a shortage of places to imbibe, but getting a well-made cocktail for under ten bucks is another story. Fortunately, ...

May 18th, 2010 at 2:00PM: We need dive bars more than we care to admit. They are the counterweight to a world overflowing with upscale lounges and designer "mixologist" cocktails, a way to keep it simple, hang out with friends old and new and tip back our favorite beverage. Gadling is a big fan of dive bars too. That's why we've put together this list of 19 of our favorites. Where's your favorite dive bar? Leave us a tip ...

Jan 11th, 2010 at 3:00PM: The building at 3930 Cass Avenue in Detroit doesn't look like much. A short, squat brick square with a green awning proclaiming it as "The Old Miami," the space has actually had several different names throughout the years.
In the 40's and 50's it was called The Miami Lounge and was an after-work hang for car salesmen in the area. The 60's saw it transition into Ken's Lounge, a sleazy joint ...

Jan 11th, 2010 at 2:00PM: When the commercials tell you "there's an app for that", they are not kidding around. So, when I went searching for an iPhone app to accompany the "dive bar day" here on Gadling, it only took 20 seconds to find something fantastic.
The "TripleD unauthorized fan guide and companion" is the perfect mobile companion for the hugely popular show "Diners Drive-Ins and Dives". Earlier today, Melanie ...

Jan 11th, 2010 at 1:00PM: The SkyMall Monday Headquarters has an extensive liquor cabinet. But when that runs dry, I like to head to my favorite neighborhood dive bar and drink until this product makes sense to me. Writing about futuristic SkyMall products for a living is fun, but, during my leisure time, I like to keep things simple at a dingy pub with cheap whiskey and even cheaper women. But all that drinking can lead ...

Jan 11th, 2010 at 12:00PM: When the editors of Gadling announced the first of our 'theme days' would be dive bars and restaurants, I was admittedly a little concerned. I usually prefer a dirty martini to a cold beer, and I'm the one who eats the carrots and celery sticks from the chicken wings platter before the bleu cheese dressing is gone. That's not to say I can't appreciate a good dive bar, and I've spent plenty a ...

Jan 11th, 2010 at 11:30AM: Your first dive bar is like your first love; you never forget it. When I started college at the University of Arizona in Tucson back in 1989 I discovered Mike's Place near the corner of Park and University next to campus. It didn't look like much with its grotty interior, the smell of hot grease wafting from the kitchen, and mix of locals and students. But it did have two things going for it--the ...

Jan 11th, 2010 at 11:00AM: Dive bars in America are known for three basic things: cheap drinks, food that might kill you and elementary violence. There's one in almost every town, and they are among our most-loved institutions. On your worst day, no one at The Ding Dong Lounge will judge you -- and if you show up in a ball gown, no one will really care.

Jan 11th, 2010 at 10:00AM:
The term "dive bar" gets bandied about a little too often. Here in Chicago and in other big cities around the world, many bars that bills themselves as "dives" are really just hipster bars pretending to be dives (First clue: a real dive bar never calls itself a dive). Like a $75 trucker hat, it screams "Hey, look at me! I'm so unpretentious. Just one of the 'regular old folks." Don't be fooled ...

Jan 11th, 2010 at 9:00AM: Some dive bars are shady little neighborhood joints that no one has ever heard of, much to the delight of the patrons that frequent the place. Others are known far and wide, with legendary reputations for plenty of mayhem and fun. The Broken Spoke in Austin, Texas falls squarely in the latter category, with a fantastic mixture of food, music, and dancing that draws crowds from miles around.

Jan 11th, 2010 at 8:30AM: About a thirty minute drive from downtown St. Louis, Fast Eddie's Bon Air humbly calls itself "The best bar in the Midwest, maybe even the world." We don't know about that, but we do know what keeps us coming back: the cheap beer, 99-cent half-pound burgers, and huge peel-and-eat shrimp for 29 cents a pop.
The crowd is as eclectic as the decorations on the wall, from bikers to businessmen and ...

Jan 11th, 2010 at 8:00AM: Dive bars have a special place in this traveler's heart. They're places where sullen, engaging, vociferous and colorful locals get together, down a few pints and tell the real story of a destination. They're the corner bar in the middle-class neighborhood south of Stockholm, the late night dive hidden down an alley in a pocket of the Barri Gotic in Barcelona and the smoky joint with board games ...
