We sampled Rioja wines and visited underground cellars by day, and hopped from bar to bar snacking on tapas and drinking Rioja wines by night. We found that there were several Rioja wines that we loved, at that the tapas served there (while not incredibly creative like those offered in the Basque country) were simply ...

Oct 16th, 2009 at 1:30PM: As Halloween approaches and the weather gets cooler, we realize that winter in the northern US, with its short hours of daylight and negative wind-chill factors, is just around the corner. Suddenly, it seems like there's no better time to book a tropical vacation. If you're thinking about a trip to a sunny island paradise, log in to Twitter and start following Marriott Resorts.
Now through the ...

Sep 16th, 2009 at 1:30PM: Nearly every major city has a Restaurant Week - one week per year when dining establishments all over the city offer multi-course menus at a deep discount. Restaurants see it as a way to pull in new customers or boost sales during a slow period, while diners jump at the chance to try out new places or revisit their favorites for a smaller price.
For the first time, Detroit will be running its own ...

Aug 20th, 2009 at 2:00PM: Okay, the name induces a slight eye roll - I'm not broke and I'm certainly no hipster, I just love a bargain - but the premise behind one of Chicago's best new websites is pretty awesome. BrokeHipster collects all the top upcoming deals, from happy-hour specials and dining discounts to promotional parties and boutique sales, and puts them all in one place.
On any given day some of the freebies ...

Aug 10th, 2009 at 12:00PM: To combat the travel lull Rome typically experiences in August, the city is offering some fantastic deals to lure travelers. The catch? You must be under 30 years old to get the special prices.
Head to any tourist office in Rome, show proof that you're between 18 and 29 years old, pick up your free promo card and use it to get discounts all over the city. 32 restaurants are offering special ...

Aug 4th, 2009 at 3:00PM:
JetBlue and United Airlines are pushing the first taste of cheap fares out on Twitter. They hope to use what USA Today calls the "uber-trendy form of messaging" to push seats on flights that may have vacant seats prior to wheels-up. After deals appear, they don't always stick around long. JetBlue's first "Cheep" (a variation on "tweet") offered a $9 one-way fare from JFK to Nantucket. The model ...

Apr 16th, 2009 at 3:00PM: Our theme of discounted vacations continues, with yesterday highlighting the opportunity to score 100 hotels for under $100 each and today bringing car rental deals. Hotwire is now hosting a sale on vehicle rentals across the board, from as low as $8.95 per day in Minneapolis to over $20 near New York City. Combine that with a dirt cheap hotel and discount plane ticket and you've got yourself a ...

Feb 23rd, 2009 at 4:00PM: Vacation plans are changing. This isn't exactly a surprise. With layoffs mounting and a careful eye trained on every expense, long vacations are becoming short, and short trips aren't straying as far from home. For some destinations, this is actually paying off. A handful of smaller cities are pulling in visitors that normally would set off for grander locales. Charleston, SC and Fort Meyers, FL, ...

Feb 10th, 2009 at 3:30PM: The name is seductive: EasyJet. This low-cost airline boasts occasional fares of below €10 (one way) and can get you almost anywhere in Europe. What's not to love? Of course, entering the experience, you know deep down that there has to be some unpleasantness involved, but you accept that as a condition for cheap travel. After all, you're only inconvenienced for a few hours at the most ...

Jan 18th, 2009 at 12:00PM: We've all seen the flurries of deals, either here on Gadling or in our inboxes. There's no avoiding the fact that airlines and hotels are desperate to get you into seats and rooms this year, and they are ready to make it worth your while. Mid-town Manhattan hotels were offering deals for New Year's Eve! That shows just how hard up the travel industry is. When you plan your trips this year, be ...

Dec 12th, 2008 at 10:00AM: You kind of expect a visit to Venice will include some water. This uniquely Italian city, first settled by the Romans along a chain of islands on the Adriatic Sea, has always been inextricably tied to its watery origins. The city rose to prominence due to its wealthy seafaring merchants, and most iconic images of the town inevitably include a canal vista complete with gondolier, happily serenading ...
