Jul 27th, 2011 at 10:30AM: The Chautauqua Movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries provided millions of Americans with cultural, educational, and entertainment experiences that included concerts, classes, lectures, and exhibitions. It was, to quote Teddy Roosevelt, "The most American thing in America." Ask most Americans today what a Chautauqua is, and odds are, you'll get a blank stare.
Until recently, I too ...

Jul 14th, 2011 at 3:00PM: What's that you say? Summer's half over? Those of us living here in the Pacific Northwest had no idea, given the lack of sun in these parts. But even if you're getting slapped by the mother of all heat waves, it's still early in the season for the best produce summer has to offer. As for where to get great food featuring locally-sourced ingredients? Allow me.
Some cities are inextricably linked ...

Jun 22nd, 2011 at 4:30PM: Boulder, Colorado, is an anomaly when it comes to the complicated relationship between mountain towns and great food. Whether it's a slice of pizza or a charcuterie plate; a well-crafted cocktail, or just a damn good cup of coffee, it's generally hard to find quality ingredients and skilled artisans, chefs, and cooks to produce them in enticing high-altitude settings. Ski towns are a prime ...

May 7th, 2011 at 12:00PM: In a marketing move best described as "ironic," a handful of airlines are now offering land-bound folk a taste of the finest of what they serve in the air. The New York Times reports that Air France, Austrian Airlines, Southwest, and Delta are trying to lure potential passengers by tempting them with samples of in-flight meals "from" celebrity-chefs.
The modus operandi are primarily roving food ...

Nov 1st, 2010 at 11:00AM: A disruptive passenger was arrested at Denver International Airport this past weekend when he said he had a bomb. The passenger was late for a flight to Salt Lake City, missed the connection and left his luggage on the plane. After being "disruptive in the gate area" and making inappropriate comments," a United Airlines spokesman told CNN, the passenger claimed he had a bomb in his bag.

Oct 21st, 2010 at 12:00PM: If you want to travel like a local, then it makes sense to know something about your destination ... and isn't the best city to live attractive? It's the kind of place you'd want to explore and see why it's so loved. And at the same time, you'd probably want to avoid the worst of the worst – who would want to go there?
Well, a new Harris Interactive poll makes this thinking hard to ...

Oct 18th, 2010 at 8:00AM: There's nothing fun about going to the airport, and the regulatory climate isn't likely to change that anytime soon. Security will still be a nightmare, and you won't be able to bring your own water with you (at least not for a while). Fortunately, there are companies out there looking for ways to make your airport experience better.
So, what can you expect to see in your local airport in the ...

Jul 11th, 2010 at 2:00PM: How many planes were stuck on the tarmac for more than three hours in May? You can count 'em on one hand: five. This is the second lowest result since the feds began monitoring this metric back in October 2008. A year earlier, 34 planes sat on the ground loaded with passengers for more than three hours, according to data from the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics. ...

Jan 8th, 2010 at 1:30PM: Rich asks:
Hi Kent, I love your blog and it has really helped me to relax when flying. When I was a kid and used to fly it seemed as though the flight deck would regularly update passengers about what was going on with the trip, the plane, etc. Now it seems as though most of the time I hardly hear anything. It would be nice to know if there is some turbulence coming up or something like that. ...

Is it really the Monday before Christmas? (Yes.) Are you ready for Christmas cheer -- and preferably loads of spiced eggnog? (Maybe.) How about some Gadlinks to get this week started? (ALWAYS!)
The weather has been more than frightful for travelers in the the northeast, but let's remember that there are other big cities under snow, too. [via Matador Trips]

Dec 12th, 2009 at 11:30AM: Winter may not have officially started yet, but it certainly feels like it has. With temps in the double, and even single, digits and snowstorms covering the country, there's no denying that a tropical vacation sounds pretty darn good right about now. Luckily escaping to the warmth of Hawaii this winter will be surprisingly cheap thanks to two great airfare sales.

Dec 5th, 2009 at 11:30AM: Early in the morning on November 23, two jets coming in for landing at Denver International Airport had a near-miss, as one plane tried to make a U-turn into the path of the other, causing the jets to come within 200 feet of one another.
According to ABC News, one jet was in a line of planes coming in for landing. The other was on a parallel path, and needed to be guided in to the line. Air ...

Dec 5th, 2009 at 10:30AM: Airlines are using the little planes for longer runs, these days. According to the Las Vegas Sun, the average regional airline flight hit 461 miles in 2008, up profoundly from 274 miles in 2009. That's an increase of 41 percent! This is an industry-wide trend, so shopping around isn't likely to help you get a larger jet. The major carriers are relying on regional affiliates, so you'll probably be ...

Dec 4th, 2009 at 5:30PM: When a Southwest Airlines flight took off from Chicago Midway Airport today bound for Salt Lake City it had 123 passengers. When it landed, there were 124. The addition joined the flight at 30,000 feet somewhere above Denver.
As one of the passengers discovered, the floor at the back of an airplane can work fine as a delivery room in a pinch. Luckily, there was a doctor on board who could help ...

Nov 3rd, 2009 at 4:30PM: Skiing, like polo and yachting, is a rich man's(or woman's) sport. The equipment is expensive, and in order to participate, you need to go to a specific place. In the case of skiing, this means paying ski lift fees and traveling to a pricey ski resort. The costs can add up and make it prohibitively expensive for less affluent ski enthusiasts.
But there are some less expensive ski resorts. Ski.com ...

Oct 30th, 2009 at 10:00AM: Canadian singer-songwriter Dave Carroll flew United again, and it just didn't work out. Carroll made the headlines when he released a YouTube video explaining his experience with United, which broke his guitar when he changed planes at Chicago's O'Hare airport.
In his first song, Carroll said he wouldn't rule out flying United again, specifically, "To save the world, I probably would ... but that ...

Oct 27th, 2009 at 3:00PM: The travel market may be in the tank, but things are looking good for Vail Resorts. Season passes for their slopes were up 13 percent last month. Sure, some of the deals have probably helped, but the market has definitely changed over the past year. In 2008, travelers were feeling the fresh sting of the financial crisis, and job cuts were looming. Everyone became more cautious, because they didn't ...

Oct 10th, 2009 at 12:00PM: A gun was fired in the cockpit and so was the pilot. In March 2008, on a flight from Denver to Charlotte, US Airways pilot Jim Langenhahn's gun discharged, an action taken by his employer shortly after. Now that his 18-month disciplinary suspension is over, he's back in training and getting ready to take to the friendly skies. The Associated Press didn't mention whether the current program ...
