Reinforced cockpit safety doors may have had opposite effect in plane crash

Reinforced cockpit safety doors may have had opposite effect in plane crash Mar 2nd, 2009 at 10:00AM: File this one under "tragic". According to eyewitness reports who were involved in the recent accident of Turkish Airlines flight 1951, the first officer of the aircraft was alive, but badly injured when the plane hit the ground. Apparently, it took rescue workers 40 minutes to reach him, by which time he had passed away. The long delay was caused by the reinforced cockpit door, put in place ...

No serious injuries in London crash Feb 14th, 2009 at 3:30PM: The crashes continue. In London yesterday, BA Flight 8456 screeched down the runway when its front landing gear failed. Separation of the airline classes made clear in a photo

Separation of the airline classes made clear in a photo Feb 4th, 2009 at 12:00PM: This is the kind of photo I could probably post without wasting too many words on. If you ever wondered what kind of perks a first class ticket will get you, then think about the coach class passengers up to their knees in freezing cold water, watching the first class passengers take a comfortable seat in the raft. I wonder whether any of the first class passengers demanded some hot nuts and a ...

Sharks circling Hudson landing

Sharks circling Hudson landing Jan 27th, 2009 at 2:00PM: When US Airways ponied up $5,000 a passenger for the passengers of Flight 1549, most seemed skeptical. Commenter Bill opined, "I'm guessing those $5000 checks won't stop any lawsuits." A recent story in USA Today confirms this view. And, of course, lawyers have been contacted. Joe Hart wants his bloody nose and bruises "made whole." The salesman from Charlotte also says it's too soon to know what ...

Videos show US Airways crash landing

Jan 17th, 2009 at 3:00PM: Now that everyone has been rescued safely from Thursday's US Airways' crash into New York's Hudson river, the NTSB can start deconstructing the events of that afternoon. In addition to the black box and voice recorders being recovered right now, the agency also has the fortune of having part of the crash landing recorded on video, via both a Coast Guard camera and another security camera in a ...

Galley Gossip: What to do when the flight crew yells brace!

Galley Gossip: What to do when the flight crew yells brace! Jan 16th, 2009 at 9:00AM: You've just boarded the airplane, stowed your large bag in the overhead bin, smaller bag completely under the seat in front of you, and taken your seat. As passengers continue to file past you down the aisle, you place those headphones in your ears, crank up the Ipod, and recline your seat way back. This flight is just like all the other flights you've been on before. After the safety demo is ...

Canadian gondola crash

Canadian gondola crash Dec 17th, 2008 at 1:00PM: It's that nightmare you have every time you ride a gondola. Not the one where your car falls, but the one where the tower goes down and all of the cars fall. Yesterday at Whistler Blackcomb Resort, 177 km north of Vancouver, tragedy struck when a support tower for their gondola system snapped in half. Falling gondola cars hit a bus stop and a house, and another was suspended over an icy creek. The ...

This is how to land a plane in an emergency!

Nov 26th, 2008 at 2:30PM: Here is some footage of an absolutely brilliantly performed crash emergency landing. I'm by no means an expert, nor have I ever received training on how to land a plane in an emergency, but it is pretty clear from the video clip that someone was paying attention at pilot training. The pilot was flying his Cessna 310 this afternoon when he contacted the tower reporting some issues with his nose ...

Pilot hits house, crashes plane then gets up and drives back home

Pilot hits house, crashes plane then gets up and drives back home Nov 17th, 2008 at 12:30PM: Here is a wacky story from the aviation world; a pilot was flying his Cessna towards an air strip at the private Brookeridge Airport near Chicago, when something went wrong. During his approach, he clipped a house, crashed into some trees and flipped his plane upon impact. Luck was clearly temporarily on his side, because he was able to walk away, get into a car and drive back home. When the ...

Have a question of your own? Ask away! Just a note, we're moving Plane Answers to Mondays. The question pool has been drying up a bit lately, so let's hear from you. Ray asks: I was recently on a flight from Bangkok to Singapore on ...

The plane was delayed for an hour because of technical reasons and when it finally tried to take-off from Terminal 4 of Barajas International Airport, it hardly got off the ground before it swerved off the runway as its engine ...

British driver wrecks a $650,000 Mercedes

British driver wrecks a $650,000 Mercedes Jul 6th, 2008 at 10:00PM: I always wondered if those valet parking guys ever crash people's cars. They must, right? Kind of like this poor guy... According to the Daily Mail, A British delivery driver for a car rental company wrecked a rare Mercedes-Benz worth more than $650,000 on Friday. He was driving the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren to a London drop-off when an 18-wheel truck ripped off the front end of the car. He says ...

Crash survivors debate whether to eat the pilot

Crash survivors debate whether to eat the pilot Jun 13th, 2008 at 2:00PM: Let's suppose you survive a plane crash a spend five days "huddled in a broken fuselage in sub-zero temperatures." You are running out of crackers. You have no idea how long you'll be there (especially if you are a Lost fan.) The question is: Do you, or do you not, consider cannibalism? The Cessna 208 with nine passengers crashed into a mountainside in Patagonia, near La Junta, a town across ...

Most survive (yet another) Congo plane crash

Most survive (yet another) Congo plane crash Apr 15th, 2008 at 4:00PM: How is that for a positive plane crash headline for you? You always hear about "no survivors," but all plane crashes clearly don't have to be fatal. Not for everyone, at least. BBC reports that at least nine people were killed today when an airliner ploughed into a commercial area during take-off in Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It appears the plane skidded in wet weather, smashing ...

Woman crashes her car, saves her morning coffee

Woman crashes her car, saves her morning coffee Mar 30th, 2008 at 10:30AM: I just want to assure all of you that this is not a story about me. I am not saying "this would never, ever happen to me" but since I don't have a car here in the US, I don't have to make those hard choices: a latte or the front windshield? Hmm, tough. A 22-year old woman from Oakland, California may have landed in the waters of the Oakland Estuary after losing control of her car on Thursday, but ...

BA 747 narrowly escapes a mid-air collision

BA 747 narrowly escapes a mid-air collision Nov 8th, 2007 at 1:00PM: I'm constantly extolling the virtues of flying, telling my fearful friends how safe it is -- much more so than driving, suntanning, crossing the street, etc. So I always cringe a bit when I hear stories about plane crashes or near crashes. Like this one: A British Airways 747, bound for Johannesburg, narrowly missed crashing into a Argentinian747 in the airspace over Marseilles, France, much to ...

Band on the Run: Train Crashes the Party

Band on the Run: Train Crashes the Party Aug 11th, 2007 at 1:00PM: I have been thinking a lot about trains lately. On August 4th in Prince George, BC, there was a head-on collision of two CN trains just on the edge of town. The resulting derailment created a huge fire that burned into the next day and threatened the nearby Fraser River with contamination from the small gasoline spill. One tanker was northbound carrying the oil product and the other was ...
