Most travel photography fans are familiar with the striking, sun-dappled images of Arizona's famed Antelope Canyon popularized on computer desktop backgrounds around the world. But few people are acquainted with Zebra Canyon, its less popular, less crowded but equally fetching neighbor in Utah, captured excellently in today's Photo of the Day from Flickr user oilfighter. Named because of its ...

After months of planning and weeks of preparation, today is the day that the climbers on Everest will begin heading up to the summit en masse. Unbeknownst to me prior to today, Eddie Bauer has a Vimeo channel complete with impressive adventure videos – including climbing shots. I happened upon the above video, which features climbers scaling walls in Thailand. The rock is jagged, steep and bolts out of the ocean. Oceanside climbing seems to be a bonus for these climbers, though. Part of this video shows the climbers falling, ...

One of the greatest things about the United States is its environmental diversity. From towering forests of pine to sun-hammered deserts, from snowy peaks to steaming swamps, this nation has it all.
Some of the most compelling places are also the harshest. Take this view of the sand dunes of Death Valley, taken by talented photographer John Bruckman. This is the worst part of the Mojave ...

Jan 14th, 2012 at 8:00AM: An Italian climber by the name of Hans Kammerlander has become the first person to climb the "Second Seven Summits" after topping out on Mt. Tyree in Antarctica last week. This unique distinction was earned by climbing the second highest peaks on each of the seven continents – a feat that most mountaineers feel is far more difficult than the traditional Seven Summits.
In addition to Mt. ...

Belize is the only country in Central America with English as the official language. The small country, measuring 180 miles long and 68 miles wide, is a popular vacation destination for tourists whose native language is English. But Belize is good for much more than just lounging in white sand while watching the shimmering teal waves roll in and out while drinks, ordered in English, are ...

I'll admit that when I first heard the name dry-tooling I thought it was some kind of maintenance and repairs technique. In reality, it is a type of rock climbing that involves using ice axes and crampons to traverse areas without any snow or ice. Apparently, the techniques for dry-tooling were developed on winter routes in Canada where "sections of rock had to be crossed in order to link ...

Many travelers enjoy pushing their limits while abroad. They'll try bungy jumping, skydiving or hangliding for the first time because the thrill of traveling helps them escape their comfort zone. In Russia, however, those extreme sports are not enough of a thrill. How else can you explain these teenagers climbing a tower (or perhaps it's an uncompleted building?), walking to the edge of a beam ...

We've all done it. Nestled up on a nice warm couch, leafing (or scrolling) through a National Geographic magazine, you suddenly notice a beautiful photograph and wonder "how did they get that shot?". Then, without pause for a second thought, you turn the page and continue browsing - for the most part taking all of the hard work that went into producing those images for granted.

Potel, who was the co-president of his university's outdoors club, was assisting two other hikers past a waterfall when he lost his footing on slick rocks.

Earlier this week, search and rescue teams in Yosemite National Park were called into action, when a rock climber on El Capitan became stranded on the mountain after severing his thumb. Following the freak accident, the unnamed climber from Austria was unable to finish his ascent, and had to be removed from the rock face in a difficult helicopter rescue.
The man, and his partner, were ...

Supported by grants from the National Geographic Society, Kaltenbrunner was one of four climbers who reached the summit of K2, the world's second highest mountain at 8,611 meters high. The ...

This odd stone may look like an unusual product of nature, but it's actually a monument from about 4,000 years ago called a menhir. Archaeologists have long debated what menhirs were for, perhaps boundary markers or gravestones or something else. Now experts are saying this one, at Gardom's Edge in the Derbyshire Peak District, England, may be a prehistoric calendar.
Archaeoastronomers, who ...

Sep 13th, 2011 at 1:30PM: I've seen some crazy urban climbing videos in my time, but this one takes the cake. It was captured on a helmet cam and follows four teenagers as they scramble up the Moskovskyi (Moscow) Bridge in Kiev, while traffic rushes by below. After a brief conversation in Russian at the beginning of the video, the teens simply begin scaling the steel cables that hold the bridge in place, without the use of ...
