May 2nd, 2013 at 2:00PM: It came across as a simple tweet of information by Airfarewatchdog: "Frontier charging for carry-on bags if fare not bought on their site. Calls it an 'enhancement.'" The airfare experts at the site were noting a new policy from Frontier Airlines that goes into effect this summer.
"Frontier continues to make it easier for customers flying with Frontier to pay only for the services they use, ...

Apr 2nd, 2013 at 8:00AM: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips have become increasingly popular in recent years, with the inexpensive technology finding its way into everything from our credit cards and cellphones to passports. The chips allow for the sharing of information over a short range making it possible to make purchases with just the tab of a card or to pass through a security checkpoint more quickly. But ...

Dec 10th, 2012 at 8:00AM: It is amazing how much stuff we carry with us when we hit the road these days. Between laptops, tablets, smartphones, books, work files and various other items, our carry-on bags are often close to bursting. Lugging all of that gear around can be a real challenge unless you have a good daypack to help lighten the load and keep everything organized. The Javelin pack from ECBC is just such a bag, ...

Dec 4th, 2012 at 9:00AM: Like many others, I operate on a shoestring budget, more often than not, out of stubbornness. I prefer to call it budget justice, a principle of savings that guides people like me to needlessly circle the block for a free parking space only to miss the event that got me into my car in the first place, or, worse yet, to time and time again book flights on Spirit Airlines, the ultra low-cost carrier ...

Aug 20th, 2012 at 9:00AM: With all that electronica the modern traveler hauls from Point A to Point B and back again, it's natural to be worried about things getting crunched, crushed and smashed. Hard-sided luggage is the solution, especially if you're checking a bag, and eBags has a new line of branded gear; I tested one out on a recent trip.
There were two less than perfect things I discovered right away about the ...

Las Vegas-based, low cost carrier Allegiant Air will begin charging for carry-on bags as of Wednesday, April 4.
"Allegiant will begin charging for carry-ons for travelers booking new reservations beginning Wednesday (it will go live on our website late Tuesday night PDT)," said Jessica Wheeler, public relations manager for Allegiant, as confirmed by AirlineReporter.com.
This is policy ...

Mar 13th, 2012 at 10:00AM: Airline Madness is Gadling's tournament of airline annoyances. You can catch up on all of the previous tournament action here.
The first round of Airline Madness rolls on with #5 Lack of overhead space going head-to-head with #12 Inattentive parents of crying babies. Thanks to baggage fees and idiots who don't know how to pack properly, there never seems to be enough room for everyone's ...

Jan 9th, 2012 at 8:00AM: Picking the right bag to carry with us on our travels can be almost as important as selecting the items we put inside of it. Our baggage must be versatile, rugged, distinctive, and now days, easily fit inside an overhead compartment. The Carry-on Zip from Hummingbird meets all of those criteria, and then some, providing travelers with a simple, but very useful, bag for active excursions. ...

Oct 3rd, 2011 at 7:30PM:
We've all seen it: that guy who has crammed a large bag in the overhead bin of the airplane and then can't seem to understand why the door won't close. It's aggravating for everyone witnessing it. Why do so many people lack such basic spacial relations? We were reminded of that frustration when we discovered this commercial for 1Time, a low-cost South African airline. Granted, the ad is a few ...

Jan 10th, 2011 at 1:00PM: Airports are chaotic and tiring places. Between checking in, dealing with security, finding your gate, overpaying for bad food after waiting on long lines and then trying to board your flight before all of the overhead bins on the plane are taken, air travel is exhausting. Making things even more taxing is your luggage. Sure, rolling luggage releases you from the burden of carrying your ...

Jan 4th, 2011 at 9:00AM: Was Ognjen Milatovic a nutty professor? Only time – and the legal process – will tell. The University of North Florida professor of mathematics and statistics put a carry-on in the overhead bin ... and his fellow passengers said it was making strange noises. Then, he wouldn't get off his phone and take his seat when told to do so by the crew.
So, he was turned over to the ...

Dec 15th, 2010 at 1:00PM: So, you've got yourself the ultimate carry on for your upcoming air travel. Now, you have to figure out what to pack in it.
For those of us who check a bag, it can be hard to decide what, exactly, to bring on the plane with us. Valuables and documents are a must, for safety, but do you really need that computer cable? Do you need Bandaids? Did you splurge on a stupid gadget you'll never use? ...

Dec 9th, 2010 at 12:00PM: It's hard to say whether these suitcases are meant for the kids or the parents. Adorable enough to entertain kids and stylish enough to appeal preteens, and teens, these five affordable carry-ons may be just the thing to encourage children to roll their own gear through the airport.

Dec 9th, 2010 at 11:30AM: If you're looking for a gift for a traveler this year, consider getting them a stylish, utilitarian carry on bag. Carry on bags make great travel gifts, because not only are they useful, but travelers are happy to have more than one -- there's nothing more depressing than having no options.
Carry on bags, in this traveler's opinion, need to have a few basic things:
a slot for easy access ...

Apr 17th, 2010 at 11:00AM:
Several days ago, we asked you for your opinion on the Spirit Airlines carry-on bag fee. As a quick refresher - the airline is planning to charge up to $45 for each carry-on bag that does not fit under the seat in front of you. This is in addition to their checked bag fee.
The whole plan has triggered a lot of responses, from both sides. Some people are (justifiably) annoyed that airlines ...

Spirit Airlines president and CEO, Ben Baldanza took some time out of his busy schedule to try and calm the masses about their upcoming paid carry-on baggage fees.

Nov 5th, 2009 at 9:30AM: We all try to travel light and avoid those pesky baggage-check fees, but it can be difficult to cram all your goods into your suitcase and "small personal item" (which, for most people I know, has become a pretty big bag). So, when I received a SCOTTEVEST/SeV jacket to try, my hope was that it would be the ultimate, wearable, third carry-on of which I've been dreaming.
The "technology-enabled ...

Oct 28th, 2009 at 2:00PM: There's nothing so gauche as to stick your carry-on into an overhead bin far ahead of your seat, grab a book or magazine from it and walk 17 rows back to your seat. Because, whether you know it (or give a damn), one of the passengers sitting under your bag may not have a place to put his. Then, when the plane settles in at the gate, he'll try to shove his way to the back of the plane (where he was ...

Oct 21st, 2009 at 11:30AM: It happened to me the other day. I had my plane ticket in hand and stepped aboard the soon-to-depart airplane, but couldn't sit down. Why? Because of the 15 people in front of me who needed to find spots in overhead bins for their carry-on suitcases.
We all know that the boarding process has slowed down because of baggage fees. More people are opting to stow their suitcases as carry-ons rather ...
