Mar 11th, 2010 at 8:29AM: Once upon a time, the world's food capitals were a mere few well-known locales like Paris, New York, and Bangkok. All the action (and the eyes, and the forks) were focused there.
Recently, though, many areas of the world have expanded and improved both their menus and their talents in the kitchen, resulting in far more places staking their claims in the classy world of quality dining. ...

Mar 8th, 2010 at 8:00AM: New York is no stranger to tourist and business travel. We get lot of guests here, and eventually, their trips must come to an end. When the weather turns harsh, this can be problematic. Spring may be close, but March and April snowstorms happen, and there are always spring showers to make getting off the ground at JFK or LaGuardia a pure living hell. Whether you're traveling in the northeast ...

Feb 15th, 2010 at 9:00AM: It was time for Frank to go. Not because of a federally mandated retirement age, or because of a change in pension laws or fluctuations in the stock market. No, Frank had long ago decided that he was going to retire at the age of sixty. And he was sure of it.
Even when the retirement age was raised from sixty to sixty-five in 2007, Frank was still adamant that he'd be leaving at sixty. I've ...

Feb 8th, 2010 at 12:00PM: Still haven't made your Valentine's Day plans? Typical of a procrastinator like yourself, but thankfully, hotels in the Boston area are still offering some sweet deals for the sugary event. Just be sure to book before she realizes you forgot...
The Taj Boston, located at the corner of Arlington and Newbury is offering last-minute planners a park-view suite, complete with a wood-burning ...

I admit it: I'm a sucker for a great shot from the flight deck. And this image, captured by Fly for Fun (otherwise known as our very own Kent Wien) is a beaut -- I love the saturated colours and compelling lighting, shot as the flight was descending into Boston. Well done, Captain!
If you've got some great travel shots you'd love to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on ...

Jan 21st, 2010 at 1:30PM: Boston's Logan airport has voted to continue to offer free Wi-Fi. The service had been free since Google sponsored it during the Holiday season.
Now, the addition of free Wi-Fi is certainly nice, but not really newsworthy. What makes this piece of news more interesting is that it puts an end to a long battle the airport operator had with others that offered Wi-Fi at "their" airport.

Jan 20th, 2010 at 4:00PM: Travel would be great if it weren't for airports, right? Even if you fly first class, there are still plenty of ways for the experience to go sour -- from the morons in line at front of you at the security checkpoint to the long wait for your bags at the carousel. And on the plane, you have to cope with flight attendants and first class seating that falls short of the luxury you'll experience at ...

Jan 20th, 2010 at 3:00PM: If you build it, will they come? Hotels from Hyatt to Starwood - and all the boutiques in between - are prepared to put that question to the test this year. While some hotels continue to drop prices in an effort to fill rooms, other popular brands prepare to introduce travelers to new hotels in 2010.
The New York Times is reporting a slew of new hotels launching state side in 2010, with 46 of ...

Jan 20th, 2010 at 8:00AM: Nothing says "romance" like a roaring fire on a chilly evening on Valentine's Day. Through the windows, you can see snow-laden trees and pure white landscapes. From the warmth of your room, you can enjoy the winter wonderland outside, as you settle down for the perfect evening with the perfect person in your life. If this is how you envision your Valentine's Day this year, turn your thoughts to ...

Jan 18th, 2010 at 4:00PM: Massachusetts can be a strange place. It took forever for the major national chains to work their way into the state. I didn't see a Target or Wal-Mart in my area until I got out of the army in 1999. Tastes and attitudes tend to be more than a tad provincial, so even the chains are usually local. When I left Boston several years ago, I was able to find replacements for just about everything I ...

Jan 15th, 2010 at 2:30PM: I'm a sucker for a good party. So when I learned that XV Beacon in Boston's Back Bay was celebrating its 10th birthday this year, I grabbed my party hat, packed my bags and made my way over to the 60-room boutique hotel in Beacon Hill. (After all, 10 is an important age: you're finally out of single digits, you're only three years away from being a teenager and in another 10 years, you'll be only ...

Jan 12th, 2010 at 5:30PM: A growing number of business travelers is trading the appellation "road warrior" for "day tripper." Tighter corporate travel budgets are prompting these frequent fliers to complete their roundtrips in one day, rather than assume the expenses of a hotel stay and meals while on the road. Also, it comes with the perk of not being able to entertain, which cuts travel expenses further. These jaunts ...

Jan 9th, 2010 at 12:30PM: I love my two cats and I miss them dearly them when I travel for extended periods of time. Though there are more and more options for traveling with a pet, I'm still not about to bring them with me. It's just too expensive, too much of a hassle, and too much stress on the pet to fly them with me for a two-week jaunt. So they stay home and I snuggle-attack any furry friends I happen to make along ...

Dec 22nd, 2009 at 2:00PM: I'm fond of Greyhound bus travel. I like the idea of humanity rolling along on a highway. I like bus people. As one bus ticket seller once told me at the station in Columbus, Ohio as she surveyed the milling about passengers in the waiting area, "If you're hard up and you need money, anyone of these people will help you out."
Bus people have a certain air of resignation and quiet about them. ...

Nov 21st, 2009 at 9:00AM: If you visited the United States from overseas, you probably hit the ground in one of 15 ports of entry. These top first stops accounted for 84 percent of all entries from overseas in the first eight months of 2009-- up almost 2 percentage points from the same period in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Traffic through the major ports is becoming slightly more concentrated. This ...

Nov 18th, 2009 at 1:00PM: US Airways Flight 728 was forced to land in Boston Monday night, far short of its London destination. John Alexander Murry, of Glasgow, was arrested just after 11 PM, causing the plane to stay on the ground for two hours before resuming its Philly-to-London route.
The 50-year-old Scottish man, according to prosecutors, was being "unruly and disruptive," it seems. The crew continually asked him to ...

Nov 6th, 2009 at 12:30PM: I agree with Mike Barish's recent post. Road trips do rock. I love grabbing some friends, jumping in the car, and blasting great music as we cruise down the highway or along back roads. If you love a good road trip.....and you happen to live in Texas or on the east coast......and you want to drive one-way to Florida.....and you just happen to plan on going before November 15, well then Thrifty Car ...

Oct 20th, 2009 at 3:30PM: Here's a travel factoid for the day: Did you know that it was 32 years ago today that three members of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed in the crash of a chartered plane near McComb, Mississippi? ...But don't let that fact prevent you from traveling and experiencing the world! It's time to look at the festivals and events happening around the world, and this week has a particularly ...

Oct 3rd, 2009 at 12:00PM: The FBI is looking for common denominators in bomb threats on American Airlines flights between Miami and Boston. Two cases have arisen, prompting the FBI to dig a little deeper. The most recent incident occurred on Wednesday, when a flight attendant found "bomb on board, Boston-Miami" written on a bathroom cabinet. A search of the luggage yielded no bombs or other weapons.
On September 17, a ...
