For someone like me who grew up in Chicago, seeing the image above of a man planting his rice paddy in Bali is wildly exotic and beautiful. I think Flickr user StrudelMonkey had the same thought in mind when taking this photo. At the same time though, I wonder what someone who grew up in Bali might say. Perhaps this is the equivalent of taking a photo of a janitor mopping the floor of a ...

Dec 16th, 2008 at 2:30PM: Indonesia is not the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of drinking culture. Considering the country is the world's most populous Muslim nation, a religion well-known for its temperance, visitors coming to Indonesia are probably not looking to get wasted as their first order of business. But considering the increasingly modern fabric of this southeast Asian nation, it's probably not ...

Nov 1st, 2008 at 11:00AM: The three men who planned and carrier out the 2002 bombings of Bali nightclubs will be executed within 72 hours, according to Indonesia's attorney general. The attacks killed 202 people in the crowded tourist area of Kuta. The bombers, Imam Samudra, Amrozi Nurhasyim and Ali Ghufron have exhausted their appeals. They were actually sentenced to death more than five years ago. In a final legal ...

Listen to all the chatter about Indonesia on news web sites and travel blogs and you might never set foot on the archipelago. But search for some media that is produced closer to the source and you will find some more balanced opinions. Take The Java Jive as an example. An expat blog written by American transplant Brandon Hoover, it gives a realistic view of life in the rough-around-the-edges ...

Sep 22nd, 2008 at 9:00AM: I'm here with Jamie James, a former critic at The New Yorker turned author. His latest book, "The Snake Charmer", centers around a renegade herpetologist who ultimately dies in the jungles of Burma after getting bitten by a krait, one of the world's deadliest snakes. Jamie traveled to Burma to research the book. He also writes frequently about travel and culture for The New Yorker, Condé ...

Aug 7th, 2008 at 3:00PM: No. It's not Bali or Jakarta. It's Bandung. Jakarta's little sister has a rapidly growing tourism industry. Though most of the visitors are from the nearby mega-city, regional and international travelers have been arriving in ever increasing numbers. Why? There's no surf in Bandung, but... It's cool (temperature-wise). Located in the highlands above Jakarta, it is the place to take a break from ...

I am in Guatemala today and this picture reminds me of how women carry fruit on their heads up here. (I tried it and it is not easy.)
Granted, none of the arrangements here were quite so fancy.
Danner00 took this picture in Bali. The women look so graceful, dressed in the same color scheme as the fruit.

Jan 28th, 2008 at 9:20AM: I'm sure many of you have a pretty picture of a tropical island or cozy beach hanging up in your office. But here's a thought: what if you could be there, just for a moment (virtually of course). You see, recently a batch of "surf-cam" sites have popped up that hosts streaming videos of various beaches across the states--and around the world--taken by cameras set up on everything from hidden ...

Dec 16th, 2007 at 10:00AM: The photo on the cover of this travelogue cookbook has my mouth watering! And from what I can tell, the pages in between offer up much more eye candy for hungry travelers who like to cook. Where Flavor Was Born: Recipes and Culinary Travels Along the Indian Ocean Spice Route is a delicious journey that explores the origins of spices from Bali to Zanzibar. The colorful book is loaded with glossy ...

Dec 11th, 2007 at 9:00AM: My favourite time of the day, no matter where I am, is dusk -- when the hurried craziness of the city is winding down into stillness and calm. This photo from Lady Expat illustrates this so well. She doesn't specify where this is taken but from her other photos, I assume it's Bali. But it's one of those photos that could be from anywhere, you know? Want to submit your photo? Join our Gadling ...

Dec 9th, 2007 at 4:30PM: This cheerful and fun photo, titled "Full Moon Offerings" was captured by LadyExpat in Indonesia. I love the bright colors and the fact that I can't identify a lot of the what these ladies are carrying. And don't they sort invoke the spirit of Carmen Miranda? Upload your travel photos to Gadling's Flickr pool to be considered for our Photo of the Day feature! ...

Aug 15th, 2007 at 8:30AM: Beautiful landscape? Check. Stunning beaches? Check. Amazing culture? Check. Booze? Nope, sorry. Wait, no booze? Forget it. I'll just go to Thailand. This checklist is what Indonesian trade ministry officials are worried is going through your mind as you consider a trip to the tropical island of Bali. Due to an "import problem" (read: discovery of an alcohol-smuggling ring and a subsequent ...
