If you've written off the Jersey Shore as a summer getaway, please think again. Though Sandy did grievous harm to Jersey's 127-mile coastline, most of the damage was done to the northern coast; the southern Shore was relatively unscathed.
To the north, the beaches are significantly narrower than they were before Sandy; one survey puts the number at 30 to 40 feet. But in spite of the fact an ...

Nov 8th, 2012 at 1:00PM: Last week, thousands of residents along the East Coast had their homes destroyed or were left without electricity and heat by Hurricane Sandy. This week brought yet another injustice as a vicious Nor'easter storm bearing snow and frigid temperatures left victims scrambling for shelter. That's why we were heartened to hear about a just-announced partnership between NYC.gov and apartment rental ...

Somewhere around Indiana and Pacific avenues, I had a sinking feeling. Atlantic City seemed to consist entirely of strip clubs and skin dens, convenience stores and empty store fronts. The beach was a few blocks away, true. But would a sparkling bit of ocean be enough to make the uneasy feeling in my stomach subside? This seaside resort, stacked with casino resorts dwarfed by their cousins in ...

Apr 2nd, 2011 at 12:30PM: In Texas, we have no shortage of restaurants catering to the drooling male demographic. Hooters, Twin Peaks, Burger Girl, and many others require threadbare uniforms to entertain and engage their mostly male patronage. The decent food/hot waitress business plan has proven an effective tonic for a thirsty male demographic, and the phenomenon seems to be infesting the suburbs. Skimpy uniform ...

Feb 14th, 2011 at 2:00PM: The hotel-casino that hosted everyone from the Rat Pack to Liberace in Las Vegas plans to return to Atlantic City with a bigger, better, and more modern debut.
Landry's, Inc., the parent company to the Golden Nugget Las Vegas, announced plans to buy the Trump Marina Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The purchase is currently pending regulatory approvals, but Landry is already planning the ...

Oct 14th, 2010 at 4:30PM: Whether or not you're an American, there are certain places that are on almost everyone's must-visit list. Some tourist traps, like the Grand Canyon or Disneyland, are worth joining the masses and ponying up the entrance fee (although I just checked the Magic Kingdom's website, and Mickey and friends are bilking the parents of children under nine for $68 a pop).
Other much-lauded, highly ...

Jul 27th, 2010 at 3:30PM: Las Vegas is sinfully decadent in all the right places, but if you don't know where to go or how to get your name on "the" list, you're out of luck. News from The Strip is that Harrah's and Caesars Palace have launched a service to fix all that. Catering to every need of bachelors, bachelorettes, divorcees, just-turned-30/40/50-mid-life crisis travelers, corporate executives, Kardashian wanna-bes ...

Mar 12th, 2010 at 2:00PM: It's no secret that I'm not a fan of the "Jersey Shore" debacle, but it's true I can't get enough of the super-fist-pumping-hair-bumping promotions hotels are doing to cater to wanna-be Guidos and Guidettes.
The most recent hotel vying for the attention of "Jersey Shore" fans is none other than The Tropicana Casino & Resort in Atlantic City,
site of episode 7 of the hot MTV reality show. ...

Jun 30th, 2009 at 5:00PM: Summer in New York City is all about weekend getaways. The city gets hot, sticky and smelly. Thankfully, we're surrounded by beaches to the north (Connecticut), east (Long Island) and south (New Jersey). But only the trip south can add something unique to your beach getaway: gambling. And that's why thousands of New Yorkers flock to Atlantic City, NJ every summer to enjoy the sand and the slots. ...

Jan 25th, 2009 at 10:00AM: Here at Gadling, Grant gave the scoop about Las Vegas's economic woes last September. Gambling was down 16% from the previous year this past November, according to Steve Stephens, the Travel Editor for the Columbus Dispatch. The downturn has not just been in Vegas. This past week, I heard on the radio that Donald Trump's casino company in Atlantic City is in danger of bankruptcy if the economy ...

Jan 5th, 2009 at 4:00PM: After my summer Amtrak trip between Cleveland and New York City, I became a train fan. I couldn't find one negative thing to say about it except that train travel is elusive to many because of the schedule and the fact there just aren't that many train routes.
There is another train route to start on February 9 which should make some folks happy. The Atlantic City Express Service (ACES) will take ...

Mar 28th, 2008 at 1:30PM: A friend was telling me last night that her French boyfriend, who lives in New York, got kicked out of the Borgata, a casino in Atlantic City. He wasn't even gambling; he was just there with her. The reason? He didn't bring his passport and his French driver's license was not a sufficient form of ID. Only passports or IDs from the US are accepted.
That is so stupid. It is so easy to get a New ...

Dec 5th, 2007 at 6:19PM: I've never been much of a gambler. Maybe it's because I'm cheap and parting with money that I'm probably not going to get back just doesn't seem like a good idea, or maybe it's because I'm not much of a risk taker. Nonetheless, lots of people love to gamble and as long as they're not sending themselves into serious debt, all the power to them. But where does one go to gamble? The casino down the ...

Jul 4th, 2006 at 11:41AM: Bad, bad news for tourists with upcoming vacation plans to New Jersey's famed Atlantic City. This news certainly isn't hot off the press, but it looks as if the NJ government is set to face a shut down if lawmakers don't enact a budget by 8 am Wednesday morning. If Atlantic City's 12 casinos were to close it would cost the state 2 million dollars a day in tax revenue. Ouch! The problem goes far ...
