May 11th, 2013 at 12:00PM: It's the weekend, and you know that that means – it's time for "Hotel News We Noted," your annual wrap up of the best, wackiest and downright odd hotel news of the week. Spring has sprung in the hotel world, and we're seeing tons of openings from major brands and boutique properties alike, as well as a slew of packages, many of which incentivize travelers to book early for summer stays. Time ...

This summer, three new eco-fashion-oriented package tours will offer the chance for ethical designers, makers and consumers to meet artisan communities, take workshops in craft production and see the impact of their conscious purchasing decisions.
While different in structure, these trips all offer the chance to travel along an artisan product's supply chain, from visiting farming ...

Happy Thanksgiving, and hola from the Dominican Republic, where I'm spending the holiday with family and friends. Rather than searching the Gadling Flickr pool for a turkey (or Turkey, where I spent the last two Thanksgiving holidays) photo this year, I wanted to see what came up for the term "thanks," and found this pic from our own Kent Wien, boarding an American Airlines airplane in ...

In later years...President Theodore Roosevelt's daughter, Alice Longworth, congratulated me every time we saw each other: "You got out. So wise."

The day Gore Vidal died rain fell hard on the roof of his old house alongside the ruins of Our Lady of Carmen in Antigua, Guatemala. Braids of thick plaster ...

Sep 16th, 2012 at 2:00PM: A volcano right outside Guatemala's tourist attractions has exploded into a series of powerful eruptions. The natural occurrence was so intense, more than 33,000 people from surrounding communities were forced to evacuate.
"It thundered and then it got dark as the ash began falling," Miriam Curumaco, a 28-year-old homemaker from the village of Morelia who had evacuated along with 16 family ...

Tucked in a valley in the central highlands of Guatemala, the colonial town of Antigua is one of Central America's greatest treasures, as well as one of its best budget travel destinations. The town is captured magically at sunset in today's Photo of the Day, taken by Flickr user Adam Baker from his perch at the Earth Lodge, an eco-resort and avocado farm located just outside the city. ...

Feb 2nd, 2012 at 9:00AM: Antigua is a lush, green land of 365 beaches (one for every day of the year!), warm sunshine, and laid-back island culture. It is also the land of the luffa.
Beauty junkies the world over are familiar with these excellent exfoliating tools, perfect for sudsing up and washing down in the shower or tub. We may even know them by other names – shower sponges, poofs, etcetera. Today, many are ...

Ponder today's Photo of the Day, by BaboMike. What looks at first glance like some sort of space-age cushion is in fact the interior of a cathedral cupola dome in Antigua, Guatemala. That this stark simplicity depicts a cupola dome seems improbable at first glance; after a sustained gaze, however, the surprise fades. What else, one wonders, looks simultaneously like itself and like something ...

Aug 1st, 2011 at 12:01PM: If you're as old as or younger than MTV, which turns 30 today, then you probably can't recall when MTV (short for "Music Television") played music videos and nothing but. MTV launched on August 1, 1981, with a handful of videos filmed mostly on stages or sets tricked out with some lighting and a few props. As MTV grew in popularity, more and more musicians went on location to shoot miniature films ...

Apr 6th, 2011 at 11:00AM:
My first Latin America budget adventure, to Antigua, Guatemala, got off to a bad start. My flight from New York to Atlanta was cancelled due to bad weather and I was rebooked via Los Angeles. I finally arrived in Guatemala City a day late, and two days of activities suddenly needed to be compressed into one. In the spirit of the assignment, however, I didn't inflate my budget. $75 was my limit ...

Latin America is one of the world's most budget-friendly regions for visitors. There are very cheap places to stay across the region--most notably across Central America--where a few dollars will get you a bed for the night and dinner.
But in a budget-friendly region like Latin America there are also huge divides in terms of quality. How do you do your research to make sure that you come up ...

Jun 4th, 2010 at 4:00PM: You could spend Independence Day gathered around the BBQ, watching Uncle Ed perform his new party tricks, keeping the dog from jumping on the food table, and hiding the adult fireworks from the kids. Or, you could spend July 4 at Jumby Bay, a Rosewood Resort on the beautiful island of Antigua, sipping Caribbean cocktails following your oceanside massage. Seems like a no brainer to us...

Apr 26th, 2010 at 2:00PM: The best part of all-inclusive trips is that the thinking is taken out of the equation. Want a second drink? Hell, a second entrée? Go for it! There's no reason not to ... because the bill is already paid. I had my first brush with the all-inclusive concept last summer, and I'm sold on it, especially since I get impatient while waiting for the bill (when the meal's over, I just want to get ...

I have an unusually small head. It makes buying hats quite difficult. Hats, you see, rarely look good on me. I always look like a child wearing daddy's cap. It's embarrassing. From fedoras to Stetsons, I almost always struggle to find my size in head wear. So I can sympathize with the young man in the background of this photo taken by Flickr user ³²¹. Taken in Guatemala, his ...

The package includes stroke and strategy clinics with the pros, free court time on Curtain Bluff's four courts (including balls and rackets) and the chance to participate in Pro-Am tournaments, exhibitions and lessons. Pregnancy is already challenging enough, especially if you're a first-timer. Moms- and dads-to-be alike need a break from the doctor's appointments, planning and anxiety that come with bringing a new life into the world. So, when you measure the future in centimeters (you'll get it if you're expecting) instead of miles, it's hard to imagine getting on a plane, regardless of how attractive the ...

Oct 2nd, 2009 at 1:00PM: January is a great time to head down to the Caribbean. The weather is just about at its coldest and dreariest. The days are short and cloudy. Disappearing for four nights of sunshine, warmth and bliss is pretty hard to turn down. Well, committing to four will get you five at Curtain Bluff in Antigua early next year. Book at least a junior suite for four nights between January 3 and 23 next year, ...

Sep 11th, 2009 at 9:00AM: Six Carnival cruise ship passengers hit and choked the police. Or, the police punched the passengers in the face. A week after the half dozen New Yorkers were arrested, the only thing that's clear is that both sides say they're right.
While on a 10-hour port call in Antigua, the cruise passengers paid a taxi driver to give them a tour of the island. The tour ended at a beach – rather than ...

Sep 9th, 2009 at 8:30AM: It looks like Carnival could use some new passengers. Not even a week after banning a family for life – and then reversing the ban – six passengers on one of its ships have been detained in Antigua. Now, if you're going to get stuck someplace, Antigua isn't bad, but I'd rather be in a resort than involved with the criminal justice system – it just seems more fun.

Aug 30th, 2009 at 8:00AM: I know we're still sweating the summer, and January seems like a lifetime away. But, think back seven or eight months. Remember how cold it was. It's hard to make the connection, but it really was that cold out, and you lived it. It's going to happen again before you know it. So, now is probably the time to book a retreat from the crushing cold. Curtain Bluff's new package, "The Power of 10," is ...
