Sometimes a food's name says everything you need to know about it. Tucked away in the museum part of Amsterdam, the Lunch Kiosk is a mobile operation intended to feed the tourists in need of some fast grub. I was in that spot on my visit earlier this month, and I do like to sample a hot dog wherever I go. It seemed like an opportunity I couldn't pass up.
At the Lunch Kiosk, the Chubby Hot ...

Knocked up abroad has been on a bit of a hiatus as my travel schedule has slowed and the due date has sped up. Feel free to catch up with posts on pregnancy travel, Turkish superstitions, medical care, and naming children.
I'm into the final month of my pregnancy in Istanbul and that means the countdown is on to get stocked up with wee tiny baby things, garishly colored toys and furniture, ...

Jun 7th, 2011 at 12:00PM: Last autumn, after having tracked the Airbnb buzz for a while, I finally took the plunge and reserved rooms through the site in Panama City and Bogotá for my two-stop December jaunt.
About a half-hour into my first pit stop, it was already clear to me that the service was a perfect fit for budget-conscious travelers. (For the record, I'm not the only Airbnb fan at Gadling. Check out my ...

Mr. Show with Bob and David is, arguably, the greatest sketch comedy show ever. When they took on the nerve-wracking experience of trying to smuggle marijuana back from Amsterdam, it was hilarious. While the TSA has made the airport experience stressful even if you aren't doing anything illegal, this scene hysterically captures what happens when backpackers try their hand at something that ...

The folks over at Bing Travel have been studying up on 2011 Spring Break airfare, and we hate to break it to you, but they've found that the average airfare cost is up more than 10 percent over last year, to $489. But the airfare increase doesn't have to stop the beach party. If you choose wisely, there are still plenty of Spring Break deals to be had.

Ah, Valentine's Day. It's a loaded holiday, one with high expectations. This year, though, I got into the spirit of things: I decided to rustle up a list of the world's great sex museums. Even if you can't pay a visit, their websites are informative and loaded with photos of exhibits. And best of all? You can indulge all by yourself, no relationship needed.

Feb 3rd, 2011 at 8:30AM: Amsterdam isn't known as a dirt cheap place to dine. There are plenty of places to find decent food at affordable prices, however, and not just at those stands churning out cones of frites doused in mayonnaise. (For the record frites topped with mayonnaise are delicious. Eat them at least once. You won't regret it.)

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has been considered one of the best airports in the world for as long as I can remember - even when I flew in and out of it every week back in early 80's, Schiphol had some of the best airport shopping of any airport.
In recent years, the airport added a casino, loads of new restaurants, a spa, shower facilities, 2 hotels and a museum.
And now two more ...

Dec 10th, 2010 at 10:30AM: Ah, Lady Gaga, what would we do without your telephone hats and nude suits?
Now the famous wax museum Madame Tussauds has unveiled Lady Gaga models at eight of their branches: London, New York, Las Vegas, Hollywood, Amsterdam, Berlin, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
The figure at the London branch has the crazy suit shown here: a telephone hat designed by Philip Treacy and a midnight-blue Armani ...

In Germany, a "fleshmob" of semi-naked activists from the Pirate Party staged a body scanner protest at the Berlin-Tegel Airport, reports Discover magazine. German authorities plan to begin using "Nacktscanners," or AIT (Advanced Imaging Technology), which uses high frequency radio waves to produce images of a passenger's naked body, across the country within the next two years.

Nov 3rd, 2010 at 1:30PM: Is it the beginning of the end for Dutch tolerance of weed? The recently elected conservative coalition has promised a number of controversial measures, including curbs on immigration, banning Islamic face covering, and of more interest to travelers, cracking down on legal marijuana smoking.
The Netherlands has been a destination for pot smokers ever since marijuana was made legal in the 1970s. ...

Staying in a hostel in Europe is a rite of passage for budget-conscious travelers making their way around the continent. This is particularly the case for budget-conscious younger travelers. Here are ten hostels across Europe that either receive particularly high user-review grades or are notorious enough in one or another way to be noteworthy.

In 2013, Europe could become even easier to navigate, with a new high-speed train connecting Germany with other major cities in Western Europe. The new Deutsche Bahn train would travel at 200 miles per hour from London through the Euro Tunnel, arriving in Amsterdam in four hours (currently only reachable with a connection) and Frankfurt in five hours (down from seven hours on DB). Some countries are more open to public displays of affection than others. In India, "obscene acts" like kissing in public are discouraged, if not downright illegal. In France, amorous couples are practically de rigeur. This photo by Flavio@Flickr taken in Amsterdam, catches a randy couple playing some peekaboo on the street, though he notes that moments later, the police asked them to take their ...

Sep 15th, 2010 at 2:00PM: It's a long flight from Amsterdam to the New York City/Newark area. I've done it. I get antsy and bored. I bring lots of stuff to do. Anything that could make the time pass a little faster would make it onto my list ... and that includes putting a few cocktails back.
Of course, I'm not the guy flying the plane.

2. In an article in Melbourne's The Age, Jewel Topsfield cruises down the Mekong, through Cambodia and Vietnam. She eats a tarantula, ...

Jun 7th, 2010 at 2:30PM: Hyatt's boutique brand, Andaz, is climbing its way up the hotel chain and making an impact on travelers. The response to Andaz has been bountiful, so much so that Hyatt announced today the company will add three new Andaz properties in Sanya Sunny Bay, China; Delhi, India; and Providenciales, Turks and Caicos.

Apr 9th, 2010 at 1:30PM: The people at the Andaz hotels have been very busy this year. Now comes word that Andaz Amsterdam will be the first Andaz hotel in mainland Europe.
