Of all the Wild West towns in America, Tombstone, Arizona, stands out as legendary.
Tombstone got its name from a mining claim filed in 1877. Prospector Ed Schieffelin had been told by local soldiers that the southern Arizona hills were crawling with Apaches, scorpions and rattlesnakes and that he'd only find his tombstone there, so he thumbed his nose at their pessimism by naming his claim ...

Today marks my second Thanksgiving outside of the US (in Turkey, ironically) and as nostalgic as I am for Pepperidge Farm stuffing and canned cranberry sauce, this week I am missing another important piece of my past: the Grill restaurant in Tucson, Arizona. A landmark of downtown Tucson for decades, Grill (true regulars know to leave off the "the") shut its doors this week, leaving many current ...

I often hear people saying the U.S. has a short history. Actually it's as ancient as anywhere else. Before the Europeans took over this land there were hundreds of Native American cultures living here. Some have survived; others have disappeared. One of the most evocative reminders of their civilizations is the rock art of the American Southwest. Here are five good places to see some.

Apr 29th, 2010 at 3:00PM: On Interstate 10 between Tucson and Phoenix is one of America's most enduring ancient mysteries--a giant adobe structure called Casa Grande. It was erected by the Hohokam, a people who built towns where Tucson and Phoenix are today and who turned the desert green with an extensive system of irrigation. Ironically, the modern city of Phoenix was founded by American settlers who cleared out the ...

Jan 11th, 2010 at 11:30AM: Your first dive bar is like your first love; you never forget it. When I started college at the University of Arizona in Tucson back in 1989 I discovered Mike's Place near the corner of Park and University next to campus. It didn't look like much with its grotty interior, the smell of hot grease wafting from the kitchen, and mix of locals and students. But it did have two things going for it--the ...

Nov 19th, 2009 at 10:30AM: Civil War battlefields are some of the most popular tourist destinations in the U.S. The most famous battlefields, such as Gettysburg and Shiloh, attract hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. But there are many other battlefields that are just as interesting but little-known outside their local area. Here are four that any history buff will enjoy. You'll notice all of them are west of the ...

Nov 16th, 2009 at 10:30AM: The Old West was a place where there were gunfights on every street, the bank got robbed every day, and every saloon was filled with girls dancing the can-can. Well, actually it wasn't, but that's the way it seems from the movies, and a lot of those movies were filmed at Old Tucson Studios. Located a short drive west of Tucson, Old Tucson Studios is the perfect place to film a Western. There's an ...

Sep 19th, 2009 at 11:00AM: Upscale spas may not be accustomed to offering deep discounts, but the current economic situation has left them little choice. As a result, you'll be able to take advantage of some fantastic deals and go to spas that might be out of reach otherwise. Live like the wealthy (used to) for a few days.
For the top shops in the spa business, the International Spa Association (ISPA) says that visits are ...

Apr 18th, 2009 at 3:00PM: Who thought that Tennessee and New Hampshire would be some of the top towns in the country for art lovers. AmericanStyle magazine just issued the results of its twelfth annual arts destinations poll. Some spots are predictable. Others, like Chattanooga, will just blow your mind. This is the first year Chattanooga made the list, shooting all the way up to second in the mid-sized city category. If ...

Oct 9th, 2008 at 4:30PM: In another "sign of the times", Tucson international airport is about to lose its last remaining scheduled international flight. Aeromexico had been flying the Tucson - Hermosillo route since the 80's, making the trip 4 times a week. The irony of the situation is that the final international flight will depart the same day the new Tucson international terminal is scheduled to open. What the ...
