The blogosphere has been heating up over the issue of ethics and "swag." There's plenty of free stuff flowing through the media industry. At Gadling, obviously, the big one is travel, but gadgets, books, liquor, cigars and other products are often supplied ...

Mar 22nd, 2009 at 10:30AM: When Pico Iyer was growing up, his father was a friend of the Dalai Lama. That was the beginning of Iyer's own relationship with a person that many seek out as a spiritual rock star of sorts. In his book The Open Road, The Global Journey of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Iyer gives insight into what it's like inside the Dalai Lama's circle, as well as, what it's like being inside Iyer's life.
When ...

Mar 16th, 2009 at 11:00AM: When I first read Pico Iyer's book Video Night in Kathmandu, I was hooked. Reading Iyer's words is a trip down streets that you may have traveled before but have not found the words to describe. When you read his prose, the tendency is to say, "Yes, that's it." For places one hasn't been, he draws you into the scenes as if you are there looking at the world through his perceptive eyes.
Seven ...

Jan 12th, 2009 at 5:30PM: Ben Groundwater points out in his Sydney Morning Herald post "Travel Reads for the Road" that a good book is a wonderful companion to have while traveling. Not only can reading help fill up down time in a satisfactory way, a good book can enhance travel experiences.

Oct 31st, 2008 at 2:00PM: Two of the things I remember from an interview I heard with David Sedaris on Travel with Rick Steves is that Business Class is known as ICU because passengers are in need of attention and flight attendants pass gas as they walk up the aisles because the sound covers the noise.
A flight attendant told Sedaris that. Not, Heather, our Gallery Gossip gal, someone else.
Here are two travel tips ...

Sep 27th, 2008 at 10:00AM: As you've probably gathered we've geared up for a Rolf Potts extravaganza here at Gadling. Here's just another plug for Potts, but more so a shout out to one of Gadling's former bloggers who is bringing travel to your armchair through books.
Kelly Amabile, fellow world traveler and voracious reader --she created Gadling's feature One for the Road--is combining those passions as the events manager ...

Aug 26th, 2008 at 2:30PM: If there was ever an indication that one should seize the day and not wait to take that wonderful trip you've always wanted to go on, it's this story at msnbc.com.
Dave Freeman, the co-author of 100 Things to Do Before You Die: Travel Events You Just Can't Miss unexpectedly died on August 17. He fell and hit is head in his own house. He was only 47.
As a person who is reaching a hallmark ...

Aug 8th, 2008 at 11:00AM: When on a road trip with family--i.e., spouse, kids and possibly in-laws or parents, a travel book that delves into similar situations is a welcome companion. There is an uplifting quality to being able to recognize aspects of the life you are living to what you are reading. If any of you with children wonder if your best traveling days are over, pick up the 4th travel book I read on my road trip ...

Aug 7th, 2008 at 11:00AM: #3. So Many Enemies, So Little Time: An American Woman in All the Wrong Places--Elinor Burkett
When I chose this book as one of my road trip to Montana books, the title caught my attention. As an American woman, also hooked on travel, I wanted to delve into someone else's experiences. What I found is a book that taught me much--always a delight when on the road.
Excerpt:
But as I trudged to ...

Aug 6th, 2008 at 10:30AM: When I was picking out books to read on my road trip to Montana from Ohio and back, I wanted a mix of types so that each book would be distinct from each other. The titles also grabbed me. The premise of the second one I read is unusual. That also led me to check it out from one of the branches of the Columbus Public Library.
#2. Honeymoon With My Brother: a memoir -- Franz Wisner.

Aug 5th, 2008 at 10:30AM: I'm one of those people who haul books when I travel. I am ambitious, imagining hours of page turning. Usually, though, I barely crack a book. One advantage of riding in a car across a good portion of the United States, as I have recently experienced on my family's road trip to Montana, is the hours for reading.
There are miles and miles and miles between Ohio and Montana, particularly if you ...

Feb 17th, 2008 at 2:00PM: Sarah, a Gadling reader, recommended to us another traveler's online publication she recently discovered. I headed to Without Baggage to see what was there. Hank Leukart's Without Baggage is an online magazine that delves into the world's interesting places with a sense of purpose. The essays posted every so often evoke emotions and intellectual pursuits that aim to explore the depth and meaning ...

One of our favorite magazines here at Gadling, Budget Travel, is dedicating their entire 10th anniversary issue (June 2008) to reader submissions. Even the cover photo will be selected from amateur photo hounds (that would be you if you've ever submitted a photograph to our Gadling Flickr Pool! Make us ...

Oct 14th, 2007 at 11:15AM: Friday night on a whim, I headed to the Palace Theatre in Columbus to see David Sedaris. Since he was here last year, I hadn't planned to go, but changed my mind. This year, as I laughed those kind of laughs that start to hurt after awhile, huge chortles and the gawfaws--along with everyone else in the audience, I thought about how much his stories capture the aspects of travel that I love. The ...

Aug 15th, 2007 at 10:15AM: "What is that feeling when you're driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing?- it's the too-huge world vaulting us, and it's goodbye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies." Part 2, Chapter 8, page 156 (From Web site Book Rags: Quotes from Jack Keroauc's On the Road.)
Isn't this just a perfect sentiment about what travel ...
