Known as the Venice of the North, Stockholm is a city defined by water; it's in the soul of the city's inhabitants. Cold and icy in the winter and ready for sailing and bathing in the summer, water is as much a symbol of Stockholm as Old Town and the Royal Palace. This makes the Swedish capital the ideal hub for adventure – the chance to blend an urban center with the beauty of the ...

May 8th, 2013 at 11:00AM: A few weeks ago I went to Sweden. I'd planned to spend the week doing research elsewhere, but when I sat down to actually review the visa requirements for said place it became clear that I simply didn't have time to pull everything off without more lead time. So, with a few "spare" days ahead of me, I decided to go to Stockholm to see some old friends instead.
I flew out from London on a ...

Apr 24th, 2013 at 2:00PM: Dancing Queens, get dancing, an ABBA museum is opening in Stockholm.
ABBA The Museum will open its doors in the Swedish capital on May 7. It covers the complete history of the disco group and will display their gold records, crazy '70s costumes, and even reproductions of their recording studio and dressing rooms.
As visitors pass through the museum they'll be treated to different music in ...

This week on Instagram we're off to Sweden, and since I'm at the helm you can expect a lot of bike and food photos. And some good sun shots on ice, because this time of year, in good weather, the landscape can be simply stunning.
With family in Sweden, I have spent a lot of time in the land of pickled herring, meatballs and Abba. It's a place that I come back to in order to refuel, ...

How much do we really know about the Vikings? A new exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh asks this question and comes up with some interesting answers.
"Vikings!" collects more than 500 objects from the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm to show a side to Scandinavia's most famous culture that most people don't know.
While most of the public is aware (hopefully) that ...

Uppsala University in Sweden is 535 years old today, having been inaugurated on this date in 1477. As one of the older universities in Europe, it has quite a few sights to see and is located in a town of ancient importance.
The city started as a religious center for the pagan Vikings and the location of their Thing, a general assembly. An ancient temple at Uppsala was said to have had statues ...

Jul 6th, 2012 at 3:00PM: Are you short on cash but want to travel? Maybe you should consider traveling to Sweden for your next vacation. Beginning this month, the Clarion Hotel in Stockholm is allowing guests to pay for their hotel with artwork instead of money.
The program began because the general manager's grandfather was an artist. In honor of him, the hotel has decided to pay tribute to creativity. For guests who ...

May 25th, 2012 at 1:00PM: Quick! What's the first thing you think about when you think about Sweden? If it's not IKEA, smorgasbords, or cold winters, then it's probably Absolut, the vodka brand whose bottle inspired 850 works of Pop art from 1986 to 2004. Now, 70 of the best of those works of art are to be featured at the Spiritmuseum. ...

Sweden's capital Stockholm has a lot to offer-fine dining, good shopping, lovely parks, access to some interesting day trips (the old Viking capital of Uppsala being my favorite) and a unique museum. The Vasa Ship Museum is one of Sweden's most popular tourist attractions and it's easy to see why. It houses a beautifully preserved 17th century warship.
The Vasa was meant to be the pride of ...

Dec 16th, 2011 at 3:00PM: Archaeologists love a good mystery, and some researchers in Sweden have themselves a big one.
Earlier this year a research team opened what they believed to be the tomb of King Magnus Ladulås, who ruled Sweden from 1275-90. Magnus was a popular king with the commoners and earned the nickname "Ladulås", which means "lock the barn", for his law giving peasants the right to refuse free ...

We asked our friends at Wanderfly.com, a web travel tool that helps you choose a vacation spot, for some Labor Day island getaways offering deals for the long weekend.

From an island microslum in Colombia to a haute enclave in central Paris, the ten most crowded islands in the world bear scant similarities in class or culture. In fact, every entry in the top ten comes from a different country. But being islands, each shares the common thread of scarcity - whether it be land, resources, or housing. In general, these islands are prophetical microcosms for an ...

If you were just let out of solitary confinement after having wandered the globe, where would you go? Now, let's make it complicated: what if you were one of the most controversial figures on the planet?

Dec 3rd, 2010 at 9:30AM: Practical, how-to budget travel advice is indispensible. There's something particularly valuable about travel advice that opposes the emphasis on expensive hotels and other forms of high-end consumption that characterizes the contemporary travel media, perhaps especially in regions like Europe where costs are generally quite high.
Budget-friendly travel in Europe is no impossible dream, and the ...

Staying in a hostel in Europe is a rite of passage for budget-conscious travelers making their way around the continent. This is particularly the case for budget-conscious younger travelers. Here are ten hostels across Europe that either receive particularly high user-review grades or are notorious enough in one or another way to be noteworthy.

Stockholm has an expensive reputation -- those who return from a visit to this swanky Swedish capital rave about its slick design, luxurious cuisine and modern amenities. As a result, would-be travelers automatically expect it will be more expensive than other European destinations. It isn't.
Though subtle, the capital of Sweden has a thriving and widespread budget culture – you just ...

Aug 4th, 2010 at 8:30AM: Arlanda Express offers the fastest and easiest transport from Stockholm's international airport (Arlanda) to the city center, but it hasn't always been an inexpensive way to go - until now.
Through August 29, the fast train will take you and your traveling companion between the airport and city center for SEK280 (about US$20 each). The normal price is SEK240 each (or a little more than US$30 ...

Jul 27th, 2010 at 3:00PM: Our hearts are still in Stockholm this week, neck deep in the celebration of one of Scandinavia's biggest holidays: Midsommar. In case you missed it earlier, Midsommar is the celebration of the longest day of the year in these high latitudes, a time when the sun only sets for three hours a night and when Stockholm is most appreciable.
From a local's perspective, Midsommar is often spent with ...

Jul 20th, 2010 at 9:00AM: In ten short hours I have forgotten Chicago. Sitting outside of Hotel Skepshollmenn on the sprawling, gravel terrace, the pastel, Scandinavian sun reflects off of the yellow building walls and tall, leafy trees rustle in the polite sea breeze. It's hard to believe that we've so fluidly escaped the Midwest heat, let alone that we're in the center of the largest city in Sweden.
Here in Stockholm ...

Deep in the lowest latitudes of the Earth's extremities, the far reaches of the planet where temperatures begin to plunge and where human populations drop precipitously, seasons have deeper meanings. Spring, Winter and Fall are plain, solid facts of life, the cold months during which fires are built, hard work is complete and the foundation of the year is laid. These are the months where Lyle ...
