Jul 18th, 2009 at 11:30AM: That was quick. In less than two months after opening shop for business, Jet Airways JetAmerica has decided it can't take people from Toledo to points beyond after all. The end of May the airlines had started selling tickets to places like Melbourne, Florida, Lansing, Michigan and South Bend, Indiana with plans to expand to Newark, New Jersey and more. The airlines was to start flying this ...

May 27th, 2009 at 8:00PM: When Skybus folded last year, there were rumblings that it might resurrect but in another form. JetAmerica, a new budget airlines has just launched in Toledo. Is Skybus rising like a phoenix from the ashes? Like Skybus, JetAmerica is borrowing some of Ryanair's strategies but unlike Columbus's defunct airline that left behind a hole in airline service and oodles of bills is hoping to avoid ...

Dec 24th, 2008 at 2:00PM: We lost quite a bit in 2008. Several old banks are gone, the value of your house is probably gone, and in the world of travel several things disappeared for good as well. I've listed 5 things no longer with us as we head into the new year. Come back in a few days to read my list of 5 things we gained in 2008, and keep your fingers crossed that things pick up a bit in 2009! Aloha Airlines In ...

Aug 21st, 2008 at 3:30PM: Yesterday's news brought the welcome breath of new life to Columbus ever since Skybus did us wrong, jilting us like an uncaring, unfeeling lover.
I heard in a radio news broadcast that AirTran Airways will begin flights between Columbus and Atlanta, Fort Myers and Orlando starting November 6. As the news commentator noted, this does not mean there will be a rush on low cost airlines to Columbus. ...

Jun 13th, 2008 at 12:00PM: While you're saving for your day of air travel, keep a few dollars tucked into your wallet. You'll need them if you don't want to be sucking like a guppy out of a fish bowl when you get to your destination.
The latest trend in the pay-as-you-go flight experience is to charge for drinks. So far, credit cards won't cut it. It's cash only.
On August 1, U.S. Airways will start charging $2 for soda, ...

Apr 9th, 2008 at 9:00PM: Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, so might Skybus. Yesterday, there were several stories about the possibility of Skybus Airlines' return. The first story I heard was on the radio. Next came the nightly news. According to the stories, John Weikle, the airline's founder, said he's been working out ways to bring it back.
Weikle pointed to Allegiant Air as an indication that no-frills airlines ...

Apr 8th, 2008 at 1:30PM: Skybus is still making front page of Columbus's newspaper. We're still having the tail end of Skybus drama at my house. Two nights ago, my friend called telling me that he had received the e-mail from Skybus telling him his flight in May was no more and that there weren't any refunds. My friend is out $300, I would guess, because he paid for the ticket back in September and rebooked it in October. ...

Apr 5th, 2008 at 5:30PM: I found out about Skybus's demise from Grant when I checked e-mail last night. Grant had found out the news from a comment sent to us from a reader a few hours earlier. While Grant was busy typing up the Skybus calls it quits post, I was out having a drink with a friend, unaware that my summer plans were mucked up,--and my birthday--AND a visit from another friend.
Yesterday afternoon I decided ...

Apr 4th, 2008 at 11:45PM: Skybus just announced that they're ceasing all operations and have declared bankruptcy. According to their website, they'll continue to close out flights today, but after that all bets are off. Being as it's 11:30 at the time of writing, I think that it's safe to say nobody else will be flying Skybus. According to the new modified website "Passengers holding reservations for Skybus flights ...

Mar 26th, 2008 at 5:30PM: In yesterday's Columbus Dispatch, an article outlined just why it was a good thing that Skybus's former CEO, Bill Diffenderffer stepped down so Michael Hodge, the old CFO could take over. Diffenderffer wasn't particularly sad to relinquish the position since this move frees up some time for him to return to writing novels and plays. Helping to start up Skybus was what he liked. Hanging around to ...

Nov 12th, 2007 at 3:00PM: "Travel troubleshooter" Christopher Elliot has been fielding customer concerns about new low-cost carrier Skybus since the airline's first day in the skies. The big concern is that Skybus claims it has no customer service department (a reason why their costs are so low), so instead they offer a "more convenient" website to deal with issues, presumably. Problem is, Skybus rarely -- if ever -- ...

Sep 16th, 2007 at 11:13AM: My spontaneous, solo trip to L.A. two weekends from now, Sept. 28-30 ,started with an e-mail. A friend who works for the City of West Hollywood sent out a mass invite about an event he is in charge of organizing. The Algonquin West Hollywood Literary Award Soiree is the first ever. "Great!" I thought, "looks interesting." Then, when I saw Mark Salzman is the author who will receive the award, I ...

Jul 6th, 2007 at 12:07AM: I'm an overpacker. I read the missives about how to pack less, but my adage is, better safe than sorry. Here are some things I've found that help when I'm packing to deal with my excess.
With the number of allowable pounds per bag dropping, for instance on Sky Bus it's 50, if you are going to be buying souvenirs, presents and great deals you can't pass up while on vacation, pack an extra duffle ...

Jun 19th, 2007 at 3:45PM: As part of my family's trip to Montana via Seattle, (aka Bellingham, Washington,) finding a car rental was the next step after I picked the airline--Skybus (see post), I was particularly interested in making a car rental reservation ASAP since one Gadling reader commented that when he flew into Bellingham he noticed there weren't many car rental options. Since Sky Bus has a link to Avis on its ...

Jun 1st, 2007 at 5:25PM: A few days ago, I was kvetching and in a quandary about how exactly we would go to Montana. (see post) After checking with every cheap airline ticket site I could think of to see if maybe, just maybe, prices might have dropped since the last time I looked, I did break down and buy four SkyBus tickets. What made me hit the pay button had to do with the calendar that highlights each month with a ...

May 30th, 2007 at 4:06PM: This past week I've been air fare hunting. We're heading to Philipsburg, Montana the end of July but I've been a waffler when it comes to decision-making about exactly when we should leave and which route we should take. Last week I found flights for $245 round-trip from Columbus, Ohio to Seattle, Washington on Travelocity. This was about the same price as Skybus which flies from Columbus to ...

Apr 25th, 2007 at 1:31PM: Watch your six, Southwest. There's another discount airline on the market. It's called Skybus, and it will offer $10 one-way tickets until December 15th. (Of course, that's only for at least ten seats per flight.) Skybus CEO Bill Diffenderffer announced that "passengers can buy airline tickets for less than the cost of a tank of gas," and a company spokesman added that some tickets could reach ...
