Dec 7th, 2012 at 12:00PM: It really isn't fair. California has sun, beaches, mountains and legions of fit, attractive people. But Californians also get to enjoy otherworldly tacos and burritos too. I know, I know, there are good tacos and burritos to be had in other parts of the country, but when it comes to fast food Mexican, California is still king.
Here's how I like to roll when I'm visiting California: start the ...

Dec 6th, 2012 at 12:00PM: I do not like zoos. I have no ideological problem with them, but every time I bring my children to a zoo, I feel drained - financially, physically and mentally - by the time we're ready to leave. When my wife and I had the first of our two children in 2007, I don't think I'd been to a zoo in more than 20 years.
But since then, I've been coerced into visiting zoos in Chicago, Brookfield, ...

Dec 5th, 2012 at 9:00AM: I live in a very left-leaning community just outside of Chicago, a city that would sooner elect a Martian than a Republican to office. But even though I'm accustomed to mingling with people who listen to NPR's "Car Talk" in order to feel like honorary members of the proletariat and cast stink eyes at people who fail to bring their own bags to Whole Foods, traveling to California, the state that ...

Dec 4th, 2012 at 10:00AM: If you want a taste of quintessential California beach culture, complete with a heaping dose of surf, sand and tacos, head north of San Diego to North County. When I'm in Southern California, I don't mind soaking up the cliché tourist experience: I want to be on the beach, gazing out at the limitless Pacific Ocean, watching the surfers, preferably with a taco or three in hand. Here's an ...

Remember that New York Magazine cover by Ryu Ho-Yeol showing the departure of a score of aircraft from a German runway? It's actually a composite image stitching all of the aircraft together, and we've now the same thing in video format.
Over the Black Friday weekend, filmmaker Cy Kuckenbaker captured every single aircraft landing on one runway at San Diego International airport and merged ...

If you're looking to try your hand at surfing this summer, there's no better place to pick up a board than California. For decades, California's surf beaches have beckoned rookies and professionals alike with their laidback atmosphere and consistent waves. Dozens of surf schools line the coast, offering instruction from beginner to advanced. But if time is limited and research intimidating, ...

Millions of Americans went back to work today after the Independence Day holiday yesterday, and many began tweeting about the July Fourth fireworks display in San Diego. Apparently, due to a malfunction, instead of a 20-minute show, ALL the fireworks went off at one time, lighting up the sky for only a few seconds. YouTube user Andrew92106 uploaded today's Video of the Day, showing off the short ...

Jun 9th, 2012 at 2:00PM: Sea World, one of nation's top destinations, is known for being one of the heaviest trafficked, family friendly places. But not when the gates close at night, the park transforms.
Over on Reddit there's an ongoing Q & A with "hghost," a graveyard worker at Sea World. Here is a cross section of some of the best questions posed by users and answered by the worker. Note, quotes are taken ...

Mar 22nd, 2012 at 2:00PM: The Internet has brought us many ways to research and book hotels at prices much lower than the hotels' published rate. Aggregate sites like Kayak and Orbitz give you the best available rate (BAR) without pre-payment on a specific hotel, while "opaque" sites like Priceline and Hotwire allow you to bid for a room below BAR but the actual property remains hidden until after you book and the purchase ...

This video is more than just one man's trip biking across the United States. It's a philosophical look into what makes life itself such an incredible journey. The filmmaker, Ryan Van Duzer, began his expedition using a quote from Helen Keller as his inspiration: "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all". Beginning in San Diego, California, he made his way toward Tarpon ...

Dec 2nd, 2011 at 12:00PM: As a native Californian and longtime former Bay Area resident, I have to confess there's no place like home when it comes to the American food/dining/wine scene (New Yorkers, feel free to sharpen your knives...).
California's always been progressive when it comes to food and drink, from the early days of the vaqueros and Gold Rush-era San Francisco, right up to today's never-ending parade of ...

Apr 28th, 2011 at 1:30PM: First, it was underground supper clubs. Now, everything's coming up pop-ups. As with food trucks, this form of guerrilla cheffing borne of economic need has become a global phenomenon. Equal parts dinner party and dinner theater, a pop-up refers to a dining establishment that is open anywhere from one to several nights, usually in an existing restaurant or other commercial food establishment.

Apr 22nd, 2011 at 1:30PM: If the concept of food cooperatives conjures up images of burning bras and withered, wormy produce, hear me out. The times they have a'changed, and today's co-ops (about 500 nationwide) can be the hometown equivalent of a certain high-end, multi-billion-dollar, national green grocery chain. As with farmers markets, all are not created equal, but when you hit upon a good one, it's easy to see why ...

Jan 17th, 2011 at 1:30PM: So, Orbitz noted when we like to travel ... but where do we go? The top 10 destinations in the country were mostly predictable, with big tourist-magnet cities dominating the list. There were a few surprises, according to the information supplied by Orbitz: Boston, for example, didn't make the list, after having ranked ninth in 2009. Los Angeles, fifth in 2009, also fell off in 2010. New Orleans ...

Legoland California will be the first Legoland theme park to launch a Star Wars Miniland area. The Star Wars Miniland, which will have models of favorite Star Wars scenes constructed entirely of Legos, is set to open March 31.
Eight famous Star Wars scenes will be built in a 1:20 scale. The project will take more than 1.5 million Legos and, we're guessing, a dash of The Force.
The scenes ...
