Places of worship have long been points of interest for travelers. Solemn and usually quite ornate, these buildings provide a window onto a community's history and values and often give visitors a much-needed pause while pounding the sightseeing pavement. Cathedrals are typical for this kind of touring. But have you ever thought to pay a visit to a synagogue?
My fascination with exploring ...

While it may not be as epic as former JetBlue Flight Attendant Steven Slater's "SlipQuit" meltdown back in August 2010, this (now, obviously, former) employee of the Providence Renaissance Hotel also went out in style. After three years of employment at the hotel, he made it loud and clear that he was quitting by enrolling a group of his friends to form a marching band. Watch the video to see ...

Aug 25th, 2011 at 11:30AM: I've been following Gawker's newest series, The Worst 50 States. I've been enjoying following this series. In an effort to pin down not only the best states in the US of A, but, more importantly, the worst states, Gawker compiled a Gawker-invented rating system in order to rank our fair fifty. Granted, this rating system consists solely of the viewpoints of those on staff for Gawker, so the ...

Summer in New England is so pleasant and so cliche, I didn't arrive in Rhode Island expecting to find much more than craft breweries, lobster rolls and some wicked good times. And they certainly have those!
But no sooner had I parked the car than I stumbled across a storefront packed with bizarre costumes, alien heads and smiling ogres, looking across the street at City Hall.
What, I ...

This week, Grace Hotels announced the official acquisition of their first U.S. property, The Vanderbilt Grace.
The Vanderbilt Grace, formerly known as Vanderbilt Hall, was commissioned in 1909 by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and opened as hotel in 2008 after several years of restoration. The original owner died aboard the ill-fated RMS Lusitania in 1915. Before before its acquisition by Grace ...

Jun 30th, 2010 at 1:00PM: Arguably the most American holiday of all (sorry, Thanksgiving!) the Fourth of July occupies an undeniably special place in the hearts of millions. Remarkably, the enthusiasm of so many for the holiday seemingly floats independently of patriotism. It's a family holiday, a time for picnics and fireworks and the sheer enjoyment of hot summer temperatures. The following are a few places where the ...

Jun 12th, 2010 at 1:00PM: The Westin Hotel announced it would cut the jobs of almost 50 employees at its Providence, Rhode Island hotel. The layoffs come after several months of demonstrations at the hotel.
According to the Providence Journal, the hotel workers were notified Friday that their jobs would be farmed out to a subcontracting firm at the end of the month.
Demonstrations began in March when the 200-member ...

Jun 11th, 2010 at 11:30AM: Lighthouse Bay Resort, an exquisite Barbuda resort recently tipped by Vanity Fair's George Wayne as an appropriately majestic honeymoon location for Prince William and Kate Middleton, already cocoons its guests in utter bliss.
It offers isolation along a miles-long stretch of insanely stunning beach; a skilled chef who produces wonderfully personalized meals; an appealing list of activities, ...

May 12th, 2010 at 4:30PM: There's a lot to love about Newport, Rhode Island. The beaches, the boats, the sunsets, the nightlife, the festivals and the quaint downtown district make Newport a New England favorite. Rhode Island's favorite beach town is hopping in the summer months, so if you plan to take part in the adventures you'll need to book ahead. Located just a foot-and-car bridge away from the center of town is Goat ...

For many travelers, the default mode of transport is a plane or a car, but they're certainly not the only options. Have you ever considered adding a bicycle ride to your next trip? Riding a bike has a number of advantages over other forms of transportation. You'll move slower, no doubt, but with that slowness comes an increased awareness of your surroundings, a chance to get some fresh air and ...

Jan 20th, 2010 at 8:00AM: Nothing says "romance" like a roaring fire on a chilly evening on Valentine's Day. Through the windows, you can see snow-laden trees and pure white landscapes. From the warmth of your room, you can enjoy the winter wonderland outside, as you settle down for the perfect evening with the perfect person in your life. If this is how you envision your Valentine's Day this year, turn your thoughts to ...

Sep 8th, 2009 at 12:00PM: As I sipped a glass of red wine at Harpersfield Winery in Geneva, Ohio on the last Saturday in August while listening to the Hollywood Slim Band, one of my favorite Ohio-based groups, I thought what a perfect finale evening to the last month of summer. The setting sun that cast its warm glow over the scene--plus the plate of cheese, meats and olives served up with warm bread cinched the thought. ...

Aug 31st, 2009 at 12:00PM: When most people think of going on a wine-tasting trip, their thoughts tend to head west - to California, Washington, and Oregon. It's not surprising. From Napa Valley in California to Walla Walla in Washington, these states are some of the biggest producers of wine in the US. But if you don't live in one of these states, there's no need to venture far from home for a weekend of swirling and ...

Jun 27th, 2009 at 6:00PM: I detest snails. I hate the slimy trail they leave behind them and their eerie antennas. For some reason, snails really like the sidewalk around my house, and I find myself tiptoeing around them when I walk my dog. I despise so much that once I put one in a jar and froze it, and sometimes I would pour salt on them. It wasn't very nice of me, I know. Ironically enough, I love escargot. I love the ...

Dec 26th, 2008 at 9:00AM: "A gate agent stood on the counter and shouted: 'Don't ask us for help! We cannot help you!'" is one of the lines in Ann Hood's recent and enlightening Op-Ed piece "Up, Up and Go Away" in the New York Times. Hood, now a novelist--her latest novel is Knitting Circle, was a flight attendant back in the day where there were meal choices and the idea that flying was special.
Hood's essay of ...

Sep 14th, 2007 at 9:12PM: I recently came across this story about three Norwegian tourists who planned a trip to Rhodes in Greece, only to end up in the French town of Rodez instead. They booked their trip through the Internet, you see, and made a mistake when typing the destination. Despite efforts of Rodez locals to make their stay pleasant, the confused tourists promptly returned to Norway. But while Rodez probably ...

Feb 5th, 2007 at 3:08PM: Maybe winter seems like a time to bundle up and stay inside, but here is an event that might get you to think again. The Newport Winter Festival in Newport, Rhode Island has 150 offerings over a 10-day spread. From Friday, February 16 to Sunday, February 26, it looks like the whole town is involved. There are mansion museum tours, tours of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, dances, scavenger ...
