Apr 11th, 2013 at 1:30PM: To the outrage of some Australians, pigs can no longer fly on Qantas airlines.
Many meat eaters can talk for hours about their love of bacon, but when the airline took pork off their menu the company's Facebook and Twitter pages were bombarded with racist and religiously offensive comments.
On the heels of a new partnership with Dubai-based Emirates airline, Qantas removed the meat from some ...

After flying with an infant to over a dozen countries and on nearly 50 flights in her 20 months, I figured I pretty much have baby travel down to a science, as much as you can call it "science" when dealing with a person who is often unpredictable and doesn't respond to reason. While each flight gets more challenging, I'm relishing this travel time before she has opinions on where to go and ...

Jan 9th, 2012 at 9:00PM: The Daily Mail reports this evening that cracks found in the wing sections of several Airbus A380 jumbo jets have led to deep concern among a group of Australian aircraft engineers. Calling for the grounding of all A380 aircraft, the group highlighted recent faults uncovered in the wing structures of several Singapore Airlines and Qantas jets in their complaint.
Acknowledging the cracks, the ...

What do hundreds of flight attendants, thousands of under-age prostitutes and the Super Bowl all have in common? Dallas. On Sunday they're all traveling to Texas. American Airlines, American Eagle, Delta, United, and Qantas hope to help stop human traffickers from pimping out women and children by holding training sessions that will enable flight attendants volunteering their time on the ground ...

The terrible floods in Queensland, Australia, have destroyed thousands of homes, done billions of dollars of damage, and have left at least a dozen people dead. Queensland is a major coal exporter, and with the rising waters hampering shipments and flooding mines, world coal prices have risen. A major consumer of Queensland coal are Asian steel mills, which are already feeling the pinch. This ...

Even with airlines falling over themselves in an effort to generate profits out of new fees and charges, flying retains some glamour and excitement. No? Not working for you? Well there are mileage programs to exploit and perks to chase. And even in the direst landscape for customers, there are always new routes to sample, smiling flight attendants to befriend, and reliable pilots to thank for ...

Dec 8th, 2010 at 5:00PM: There are a number of times we wish we'd been audience members on Oprah, but none more so than the day when she gave away a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Australia to celelbrate her 25th and final season.
Dubbed "Oprah's Ultimate Australian Adventure," the journey for 302 lucky individuals officially begins today as show members arrived on a 747 in Sydney, Australia.
The audience members hail ...

Dec 7th, 2010 at 3:30PM: So, you're new on the job. In fact, your title still has "trainee" in it. And then something goes wrong. That's enough to make you go home, pop the cork on a bottle of wine and lament the fact that you work for a third world company. Now, imagine the whole thing happening 30,000 feet from the ground. Yeah, it sucks. You need more than a bottle of wine to take the edge off at that point. In fact, ...

Nov 29th, 2010 at 4:30PM: It must be those adventure travelers ... they're always so high maintenance.
A rock-climbing rope jammed up some of the Qantas baggage equipment at the Melbourne, Australia airport last night, and as many as 400 pieces of luggage are lying around, waiting to be reunited with their passengers. Of course, the Sydney Morning Herald reports, passengers are welcome to "search through the piles" if ...

Nov 2nd, 2010 at 2:30PM: A woman got nailed in the early stages of seeking mile-high club membership. The Qantas passenger was flying form Melbourne to Los Angeles at the beginning of last month. The lights went low, and she and the man next to her let their hands go wild under the blanket. The cabin crew caught on and split up the passengers, who apparently never bothered to try the lav.
The best part: the woman works ...

Oct 7th, 2010 at 12:00PM: A man threatened to kill the other passengers on a Qantas flight from Melbourne to Hong Kong, forcing flight attendants to restrain him. An airline spokeswoman wouldn't confirm what some were saying – that the would-be murderer was praying before threatening to kill himself and others and said, "You will all die."
The Sydney Morning Herald continues:
But an Australian passenger, Helen, ...

Aug 1st, 2010 at 4:00PM: In the United States, finding ways to accommodate oversized passengers may be the subject of uneven enforcement, but in Australia, it's uncharted territory. In fact, this in-flight service problem is so ignored that the terminology isn't even standard. According to Virgin Blue, being too grande for the seat is considered an impairment, while Tiger Airways isn't sure if it's a "comfort" issue or a ...

Jul 27th, 2010 at 5:00PM: We've all been there at some point - you board your plane, and a child starts crying, with no intention of stopping until the plane lands. Thankfully, most parents are able to soothe their little ones, but for one passenger on a Qantas flight, things were not that simple.
In January 2009, 67 year old Jean Barnard was walking down the aisle back to her seat, when a three year old boy leaned back ...

Jun 2nd, 2010 at 3:00PM: JetStar seems to know that in-flight entertainment is nothing to scream about right now. You watch canned programming from a small screen. Fun. For a low-cost carrier, you'd think that fixing this problem isn't a priority, but it looks like the little guys are coming up with the best ideas. The airline is getting ready to test the iPad as in-flight entertainment. Access is expected to cost A$10 ...

Apr 7th, 2010 at 5:30PM: Forget bombs strapped to your genitals - the newest threat in aviation security is now "mind power". At least according to one slightly deranged passenger on Qantas flight QF31 yesterday.
During the flight from Sydney to Singapore, the passenger got up and announced that he was going to bring the flight down, using "the power of his mind".
The threat was taken seriously - and the passenger ...

Gadling loves Australia. We've been proponents of Americans visiting Oz for a while and I was fortunate enough to check out Australia's Red Center last year. The added flights - and the costs of those flights - have often kept Americans from delving deep into the heart of this fascinating country. Now, however, Qantas and Tourism Northern Territory are partnering to make travel from America's ...

Dec 11th, 2009 at 2:00PM: Today, Qantas announced it's intention to ratchet up their existing recycling program to include eight and a half million bottles, cups, tumblers and cans per year--and that's just from their domestic flights. Qantas will also add paper, cardboard and glass to their program including material used in some of the Qantas Club airport lounges.
The new initiative aims to reduce the airline's ...

Dec 9th, 2009 at 3:00PM: It was back in 2007 when we first wrote about Lisa Robertson. This former cop turned callgirl turned flight attendant made the news when she admitted to having sex with actor Ralph Fiennes in a Qantas airplane bathroom.
Mr. Fiennes was on his way to speak at an AIDS conference to talk about the dangers of unprotected sex, when he had his unprotected sex with Ms. Robertson.
Since then, she ...

Nov 25th, 2009 at 1:30PM: When passengers show bad behavior at the airport, everyone notices. Bad airport behavior is one place Hollywood gets it right, even when scenes are a bit outlandish.
Here are two scenes that show just what can happen when a passenger is vexed beyond sanity--either due to traveling with a family member or the actions of another passenger coupled with airline staff reactions.
Perhaps you'll see ...
