Jan 22nd, 2013 at 10:00AM: It's Friday night and I'm at a brewery tour in Milwaukee drinking beer. Good beer – not the mass-produced crap that Milwaukee is famous for. Tom Martin, our guide at the Milwaukee Brewing Company, takes a moment to state the obvious for the benefit of out-of-towners like us.
"We have a drinking culture here in Wisconsin in case you haven't noticed," he says, standing beside an imposing ...

Sep 21st, 2012 at 1:00PM: Using free power to charge electronic devices before boarding a flight is a popular activity. Airlines and airports know that and are adding more charging stations all the time. The same goes for electric vehicle travelers who might drive to the airport. As more environmentally friendly cars hit the streets, airports are adding charging stations for them too, also a complimentary service.

While Milwaukee is known for its great beer, beautiful foliage and tasty cheeses, the state also offers a range of unusual activities. Add the following to your itinerary for a quirky trip.
The Holler House
2042 W Lincoln Avenue
Bowl on real wood laid in 1908 at the Holler House, the oldest certified lanes in the country. Don't forget to tip your personal pin setter as you go back in ...

Apr 16th, 2012 at 11:00AM: In less than a century, the United States has gone from being a mostly agrarian society to an urbanized one. Most of us live in cities and, despite our growing cultural fascination with food, most Americans have no idea where the ingredients on their plate (or in that wrapper) are actually coming from.
That's where "Food Forward" comes in. After a three-year effort, the premiere episode of this ...

An exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum is looking at Impressionism in a new light.
Impressionism: Masterworks on Paper is the first major exhibition to explore the drawings of famous Impressionists. Previous exhibitions have always focused on their paintings, such as Renoir's Bathers with Crab, which is also part of the show and appears here in this photo courtesy Moira Burke.

Sep 28th, 2010 at 10:30AM: Daniel Edward Craig shares a name with the current James Bond, and like 007, he's a world traveler and a man of many hats. He's taken a career in hotel management and a keen ear for storytelling and parlayed it into a murder mystery book series, an engaging industry blog, and a hotel and social media consultancy. Here he tells Gadling about his history in the travel world, who's providing the best ...

Dec 5th, 2009 at 10:30AM: Airlines are using the little planes for longer runs, these days. According to the Las Vegas Sun, the average regional airline flight hit 461 miles in 2008, up profoundly from 274 miles in 2009. That's an increase of 41 percent! This is an industry-wide trend, so shopping around isn't likely to help you get a larger jet. The major carriers are relying on regional affiliates, so you'll probably be ...

When you stay at a resort like The Abbey Resort and Spa on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, chances are that you'll eat many of your meals at the property's on-site restaurant. This can sometimes mean dining on uninspired dishes like rubbery "hotel chicken" or resigning yourself to the fact that you'll be spending a fortune on each meal in order to avoid heading offsite in search of better or cheaper ...

Several weeks ago, I had the chance to check out The Abbey Resort and Spa on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin. 80 miles from Chicago and even less from Milwaukee, it's the perfect Fall escape from either city. Chicago residents don't even need a car to get there; the ...

Billing itself as "the only full-service resort" on the shores of Lake Geneva in Wisconsin, The Abbey Resort and Spa is one of those places where you can almost feel the ghosts of the past whispering around you. The resort was completely renovated in 2005, but its timber A-frame and low-slung bungalow style buildings look much as they did when it was built nearly 50 years ago, when the ...

Aug 2nd, 2009 at 2:00PM: Looking for love lust on your next vacation? Your next trip should be to New York, which has knocked Atlanta out of the top spot as the best city in the country for singles. And, why wouldn't it? You have more than 8 million people chasing their dreams, so the choices are endless. There's one of everything, so in one night, you could meet every flavor of scumbag available. But, there's an upside ...

Jul 12th, 2009 at 4:00PM: I'm not sure whether this was a case of paranoia, or some really bad fumes, but General Mitchell airport in Milwaukee was briefly shut down yesterday when several TSA agents complained about shortness of breath and "feeling disoriented" after smelling a foul odor coming from a passengers bag. The terminal was evacuated and rows of ambulances and fire trucks were rushed to the airport. As it turns ...

Apr 18th, 2009 at 3:00PM: Who thought that Tennessee and New Hampshire would be some of the top towns in the country for art lovers. AmericanStyle magazine just issued the results of its twelfth annual arts destinations poll. Some spots are predictable. Others, like Chattanooga, will just blow your mind. This is the first year Chattanooga made the list, shooting all the way up to second in the mid-sized city category. If ...

Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:30PM: Who said the airport checkpoint was a bad place to hang out? Milwaukee's General Mitchell Airport has turned the area past their security checkpoint into a recombobulation area. The sign is the brainchild of airport director Barry Bateman, who thought it would be a fun way to take the stress out of travel. I've got to hand it to him, it really is one of the first bits of humor I've seen added to ...

Aug 27th, 2008 at 5:00PM: There is a newly published Forbes.com article on the top 10 cities for making a living in the United States. Each has something to offer travelers as well. Here are the top cities and one place to go to in each. These are the first places that immediately came to mind. It's an odd assortment.
1. Houston, Texas. I've been to the Holocaust Museum in Los Angeles and found it incredibly worthwhile ...

Jan 27th, 2008 at 10:20AM: Almost a year ago, I wrote a post about a town in Serbia that was hoping to get some good luck by erecting a statue of Rocky Balboa. The original Rocky Balboa statue now resides at the base of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the same steps that Rocky ran up in the first Rocky movie. At first the museum said no go to keeping the statue. It was not considered art by the museum's ...

Oct 5th, 2007 at 1:00PM: Martha's post on boozing for cheap reminded me of brewery tours. When I was a student at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark through the Danish International Student program (DIS), I was mostly broke and determined to have enough money for a month long trip through Europe before I headed back to the U.S. Most people in my program were in the same life of getting by on little cash. For fun and ...

Sep 20th, 2007 at 10:40AM: I'm waiting for a Skybus route to upstate New York to open. Stewart Airport in Newburgh would be divine. Not yet, but there are four more routes to start December 5.
If you have any desire or need to head to Chattanooga, Gulfport-Biloxi/New Orleans Area, Milwaukee or Punta Gorda/Ft. Meyers, check out Skybus to see if its schedule and airport locations suits you. Starting December 17 there will be ...

Oct 20th, 2006 at 3:56PM: While a few days old now, this news on TSA theft comes out of Milwaukee where a TSA employee was caught red-handed and arrested for guess what - stealing. Apparently times must have gotten hard for the 26-year-old woman, an employee for the Transportation Security Administration for four years who is now out on bail. The incident occurred at Mitchell International Airport while the woman was ...
