Jul 26th, 2012 at 8:00AM: Travelers hoping to attend the Olympic Games in London probably should have booked their hotels and bought their tickets months ago. After all, the opening ceremonies are tomorrow and events are already starting to ramp up. But if you're the kind of person who puts everything off until the last minute, and you have a spare $100,000 burning a hole in your pocket, there are still some luxury options ...

Jul 25th, 2012 at 3:00PM: Here's to the Olympics! New York's famed Empire State Building is honoring nations competing in London by shining its world-famous tower lights in different colors each night to match the country's flags. Each of the tower's four sides will be illuminated in different colors throughout the night for each night through August 12.
This marks the second time ESB has split the tower's sides with ...

London is in a state. At this point in the labored lead-up to the Olympics, many Londoners would probably tell you, if pressed, that they would prefer that their city not be hosting the Olympics in the first place. The tenor of the local press has been largely negative – sluggish immigration processing at Heathrow, security firm screw-ups, anticipated traffic and public transit delays, ...

Jul 19th, 2012 at 7:00PM:
Tomorrow, July 20, thousands of Muslims will wake up around the world and begin a month-long fast for the occasion of Ramadan. From sunrise to sunset, they will abstain from eating, drinking, and smoking, while breaking the fast with lively Ramadan iftar feasts at night. This year is special as it will coincide with the London Olympics, and UK mosques will be welcoming people from all over the ...

Jul 19th, 2012 at 1:00PM: While we all know Olympians are excellent at sports, there are many that are apparently also skilled artists. Art of the Olympians Museum and Gallery, a gallery based in Fort Myers, Florida, features art created by former Olympic superstars. Luckily for those attending this year's Games, Art of the Olympians will travel to London from July 25 to August 13 for the 2012 Summer Games to present a ...

Jul 10th, 2012 at 8:00AM: Harry Potter fans from around the globe have descended on Oxford, England, to take part in the first major international quidditch tournament and to promote the sport for possible inclusion in future Olympic Games. Players say that the real world version of the fictional sport, created by author J.K. Rowling, is as physically demanding and competitive as Rugby and less ridiculous than some of the ...

Jul 8th, 2012 at 11:00AM: I've just returned from a five-day trip to England, in which we saw the sun for an aggregate of about 15 minutes, but I miss the English weather already. It's supposed to be 102 today in Washington, D.C., and 104 tomorrow. Factoring in the heat index, it will feel like a place well within easy commuting distance of hell.
June went down as the wettest June in the U.K. since rainfall records ...

Jun 17th, 2012 at 9:00AM: As a cross-promotion with Chengdu, China, London is bringing "panda cabs" into the city. The campaign includes 50 cabs painted with "Go Chengdu," the official English tourism website of the Chinese city.
Home of giant pandas, Chengdu showcases their iconic animal on the cabs. While 30 of the taxis are made to look like actual pandas, 20 others are covered in images of the animal. The taxis are ...

Apr 4th, 2012 at 8:00AM: The spring climbing season is about to get underway in the Himalaya where teams of mountaineers are already descending on Kathmandu in preparation for their expeditions to come. Amongst them is veteran British climber Kenton Cool who is not only seeking his tenth successful summit of the world's tallest peak, but is also looking to fulfill an 88-year-old Olympic pledge before the games return to ...

Feb 11th, 2012 at 8:00AM:
Thanks to the London Olympics, which will open on July 27, and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, 2012 is expected to be a boom year for tourism in Great Britain. In the hopes of capitalizing on this trend, six historic cities have teamed up to get noticed by travelers intent on venturing beyond the English capital.
Bath, Carlisle, Chester, Oxford, Stratford-Upon-Avon, and York, Britain's ...

Jul 15th, 2011 at 9:00AM: Occasionally, when pilots are together, the subject eventually will come around to airplanes. Specifically, just what airplane we'd most like to fly.
While I have a rather long list that includes the Ford Tri-Motor and the Spitfire, solidly at the top of the heap lies Concorde. An airplane so special, you're not even allowed to put 'the' in front of its name.
Since there was no possibility ...

Mar 15th, 2011 at 4:30PM: Tickets for the 2012 Olympics in London officially went on sale today. With only 499 days remaining until the opening ceremony, it seems that now is a reasonable time to start jockeying for seats. According to CNN, the public will have six weeks (until April 26) to place bids on the full portfolio of events. A total of 6.6 million seats are available.
Accessibility and a level playing field are ...

Jul 6th, 2010 at 1:00PM: London has been preparing for the 2012 Olympics by going on a huge building boom. Sports facilities have been sprouting up like mushrooms, and the organizers have just announced the latest planned addition--cable car rides over the Thames.
The cable cars will run from the Greenwich peninsula to the Royal Docks, connecting the O2 Arena (formerly the Millennium Dome) and the ExCel Exhibition ...

Jun 1st, 2010 at 10:30AM: October 23rd 2003 is a date many aviation nuts will remember as the end of the era of supersonic passenger transportation.
It was the day the final Concorde flight took place, ferrying celebrities into London Heathrow airport.
Of course, her fate had already been sealed when Air France flight 4590 crashed just outside of Charles De Gaulle airport in July 2000 killing 113 people.
Her ...

Aug 25th, 2008 at 11:30AM: The closing ceremonies of Beijing '08 were not quite as spectacular as the opening ceremonies. Not quite, but almost. There were still plenty of people wearing LED lights, drummers and acrobats climbing tall structures. London got a chance to do their "we're hosting the next Olympics" skit. It sucked in comparison to the other performances of the evening. There was some guy who looked like an ...
