Jan 4th, 2012 at 2:00PM: Want to make airport parking easier? Develop an app for it. JFK Airport's parking facility, SmartPark JFK, today announced the launch of their iPhone app for placing parking reservations. An update to the existing app, launched in 2009, now allows customers to not only make their parking reservation but also to earn free days with a Frequent Parking Program.
Also available online, the app is ...

Oct 7th, 2011 at 8:00AM: A smartphone app that is available on both iPhone and Android phones now makes it possible for travelers using the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport to order food and have it delivered to their departure gate, says Martin Moylan of Minnesota Public Radio. Participating restaurants at the airport include French Meadow Bakery & Cafe, Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery, and Chili's ...

The final participant in the plot to blow up New York City's JFK airport has been found guilty of five counts of conspiracy.
Kareem Ibrahim of Trinidad was one of four conspirators who in 2007 hoped to blow up fuel tanks and fuel lines at JFK airport, causing major loss of life. The lines also run under a nearby neighborhood and the terrorists hoped to blow that up too. Two other ...

Feb 7th, 2011 at 9:00AM: It appears second chances do exist in the travel industry. The Wall Street Journal reports that the former TWA terminal at New York's JFK airport might re-open in the form of a boutique hotel.
The terminal was first opened in 1962 and welcomed travelers into the international port, but was closed in 2001 when American Airlines bought TWA, according to USA Today.
The rumor around the airport ...

Jan 14th, 2011 at 7:30AM: A terrorist who plotted to blow up fuel tanks at JFK airport has been given 15 years in prison, the BBC reports. Abdel Nur, a citizen from Guyana, tried to meet an Al-Qaeda explosives expert in order to blow up JFK airport's fuel depot, and the fuel lines that run below an adjoining neighborhood. He hoped to kill thousands in the attack.
Russell Defreitas, Kareem Ibrahim , and Abdul Kadir were ...

One of the best things about blogging for Gadling is seeing where my coworkers are off to next. Like me, they're sure to pack that essential item for every adventure traveler's kit: the Gadling t-shirt.
We've collected photos of Gadlingers flying their colors in some of the most remote parts of the world, and some places that are not so remote but equally rugged, such as the waiting area at ...

Nov 24th, 2010 at 3:00PM:
The uproar over TSA body scanners and pat-downs has hit every corner of the aviation world, from passengers to pilots. The vocal consensus, at least, is that nobody likes them, even though 64 percent of Americans support the practice and 70 percent don't expect it to impact their travel. A friend of mine, flying today, tweeted that he made it through security at New York's JFK airport in a mere ...

Nov 4th, 2010 at 1:00PM: If you're flying to or through the New York City area, bring a book Kindle. You'll probably be at the airport for a while. A new U.S. Department of Transportation Office of the Inspector General report says that airports in this part of the country aren't measuring up, which disrupts air travel nationwide.
According to the Associated Press, the report says that "scheduling rules continue to put ...

Oct 28th, 2010 at 1:00PM: How do people get to the United States? Well, most of them seem to come in through the same places, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The top 15 ports of entry handled 83 percent of all arrivals in July 2010. This is a 2 percentage-point drop from July 2009, but it's still a substantial concentration.
Three spots were responsible for 38 percent of all incoming ...

Oct 18th, 2010 at 8:00AM: There's nothing fun about going to the airport, and the regulatory climate isn't likely to change that anytime soon. Security will still be a nightmare, and you won't be able to bring your own water with you (at least not for a while). Fortunately, there are companies out there looking for ways to make your airport experience better.
So, what can you expect to see in your local airport in the ...

Go to Manhattan's Lever House, and you may see that lighter – or hand grenade – that was taken from you a JFK airport. Through the end of the year, the free exhibition will consist of photographs taken by Taryn Simon of items seized from passengers and mail packages coming into the United States. She spent five days clicking away at more than 1,000 items.
The exhibition, called ...

Sep 22nd, 2010 at 2:30PM: Security gaps are so big at Newark Liberty International Airport you can drive a truck through them. Literally. Inside the terminal, the TSA goes through bags and confiscates oversized fluid containers, but no inspection occurs when trucks and vans drive through security checkpoints and out onto the tarmac. Security company FJC is responsible for protecting the airport, reports Fox 5, for which it ...

Looking for a little aviation entertainment for the last day of the work week? Check out this video clip, shot at JFK airport, showing a Delta Airlines 747 take on a tug. Care to guess who'll win?
Fast forward to the 0:45 mark to see the action, and a bunch of ramp workers running for their lives. Now, oddly enough, none of this made the news until Live Leak obtained the footage. Apparently ...

Steven Slater has almost always been the top dog. As Skyliner747, he posted on aviation message board Airliners.net on January 18, 2008: "I have been flying for 11 years, 90 percent of which has been in the lead position where I have encountered every kind of boarding challenge imaginable." So, here's a seasoned flight attendant who's accustomed to being in control and has seen everything that ...

Aug 15th, 2010 at 8:00AM:
The above video comes from NBC New York, which claims the exclusive on it. Seventeen seconds in, you can see the emergency slide pop out from the right side of the plane (which is actually on your left). It happens in the center of the screen, but you need to look carefully, because the view is partially obstructed. The slide pops out toward the front of the plane. At 26 seconds, you can see ...

The Associated Press has unearthed an internal JetBlue memo, and it's pretty clear that the airline doesn't view disgruntled flight attendant Steven Slater as a hero. In fact, JetBlue's memo has characterized his actions as inexcusable.
Loved because he left his job in grand fashion – despite the fact that "aviation is in his blood" and he wants the gig back – the emerging reality ...

Who wants a job that drove him so nuts he went ballistic and jumped out the back door of a plane? Well, that would be Steven Slater, of course. The flight attendant now famous for popping the escape chute, grabbing a beer and going home from JFK airport in Queens – who has been thinking about this for the past two decades – wants his job back. And, that makes sense, since he isn't ...

Jul 17th, 2010 at 2:00PM: Got a longish layover at JFK? Have an hour to kill before showing up at the airport? Or simply want to get in the mood for the Southern Caribbean?
Some of New York's best Caribbean-style roti is served at Atma's Roti Shop (127-07 Rockaway Boulevard, Queens, 718-641-1769) just minutes from JFK by car.
Caribbean roti, for the uninitiated, is a spongy, filling wheat flatbread. It is usually ...

Jul 6th, 2010 at 2:00PM: Something fishy is taking place at New York area airports. According to the New York Post, New York Port Authority cops regularly downgrade theft at the airport to "lost property" cases, artificially lowering the crime rates at the airports they protect.
By changing the statistics, crimes are no longer being accurately reported. According to the Post, Port Authority police captains regularly ...
