May 20th, 2013 at 11:00AM: A photo of Coney Island from May 2013
When the first structures were being built in Coney Island in the 1840s, the surrounding community was in uproar. Residents wanted to preserve the land's natural beauty. In the early 1900s, the City of New York endeavored to condemn all buildings south of Surf Avenue and the amusement community of Coney Island opposed the city. Amusements on the beach were ...

Seven months after Hurricane Sandy ravaged New York City-area beaches, construction will begin on replacement pavilions for those that were destroyed in the storm. Here's a peek at what destinations like Rockaway Beach and Coney Island will look like, courtesy of Garrison Architects, the firm that was asked to create these modular pavilions.

Last year's Superstorm Sandy devastated much of the East Coast, especially around the mid-Atlantic coastline. New York and New Jersey beaches were hit hard, with scores of houses and even towns wiped out. Many places are rebounding, such as Coney Island, which opened officially for the season in April. Today's Photo of the Day was taken this weekend in New Jersey by Flickr ...

Apr 18th, 2013 at 3:00PM: Memorial Day weekend begins Friday, May 24, and marks the start of the summer travel season. One of the most popular times of the year to travel, finding a destination that fulfills our three-day weekend dreams can take some work. Considering a visit to the Upper East Coast? Maybe not such a good idea to visit beaches ravaged by last October's hurricane. Or is it?
If you are looking for a quiet ...

Mar 22nd, 2013 at 8:00AM: Earlier this week, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that the Statue of Liberty will reopen to visitors this summer just in time to celebrate America's birthday. The iconic statue, and the island it sits on, suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy in October but is now on track to return to service by July 4, 2013.
During the mega-storm that engulfed the East Coast last year, ...

"Rockaway Beach, NY, Three Months After Sandy, GH2 &100-300mm" from David Whalen on Vimeo.
I wanted to go to Rockaway Beach last week, but I went to Coney Island instead. I was just looking for a nice and cold walk on the beach with my dogs, but I wasn't sure what sort of shape Rockaway was in since being devastated by Hurricane Sandy. While preparing to make another chilly run to the ...

For anyone who saw it, a dark version of Manhattan was, if nothing else, different. It was spooky for some and plain frightening for others, but no matter what, it was new. The darkness that blanketed the city during and after Hurricane Sandy dressed Lower Manhattan in a stillness not usually seen within the city. Thanks to Laughing Squid, I saw this video, which captures the experience of ...

Since Hurricane Sandy first hit the East Coast, photos of the devastating damage have headlined media outlets. Entire communities were lost to this storm, blocks were burned, Lower Manhattan was flooded and lives were lost. Red Hook, Brooklyn, was flooded with 5+ feet, destroying neighborhood homes and businesses. Photographer Ben Britz and I ventured out the day after the storm and collected ...

Nov 8th, 2012 at 1:00PM: Last week, thousands of residents along the East Coast had their homes destroyed or were left without electricity and heat by Hurricane Sandy. This week brought yet another injustice as a vicious Nor'easter storm bearing snow and frigid temperatures left victims scrambling for shelter. That's why we were heartened to hear about a just-announced partnership between NYC.gov and apartment rental ...

Nov 7th, 2012 at 5:00PM: The meteorological ladies have it out for the Northeast. First there was Sandy, and now there's (winter storm) Athena.
Planning on going there anytime soon? You might need to wait a little longer than you think. With Athena The Nor'easter on its way to the Atlantic states, parts of New England flights are being canceled left and right. Regulators obviously learned a lesson from last week's ...

I'm one of the lucky ones. No power, no heat and no phone service – but I have a (damaged) roof over my head, a bed and blankets, sweaters and coats to keep me warm, food to eat and potable water to drink. Yesterday, spotty cell service returned, so I could phone loved ones and friends to assure them that I was safe. (I even got a phone call from Bill Clinton, urging me to vote for ...

Nov 2nd, 2012 at 12:00PM: We'd like to begin this week's column by sending out our thoughts to all of those who have been without power or homes since Sandy tore through the East Coast earlier this week. While we escaped the worst of the storm in D.C., we know that many of our friends and colleagues in the Northeast were not so lucky. We'll be reporting on ways travelers can help throughout the coming weeks.
The hotel ...

Nov 1st, 2012 at 2:00PM: Lots of people pine after cruises to Mexico, the Bahamas and around the Mediterranean.
But have you ever wanted to go on a cruise to nowhere?
Hurricane Sandy has disrupted normal cruise routes, and Carnival has one creative solution. Rather than letting the disrupted schedules keep their ships grounded, the cruise operator has decided to capitalize on the situation: ships lying fallow, ...

Nov 1st, 2012 at 11:00AM: For tourists and locals alike, the post-Sandy vibe in New York City is unusual, even eerie.
With subway lines down throughout the city, slow bus service and intense traffic – everyone's who's got a car is currently using it to get around – the remaining signs of wreckage from the storm make for a spooky Halloween. The city's weird mood is backdropped by the continuing lack of ...

When Hurricane Sandy hit New York City on Monday night, Red Hook, a vibrant neighborhood in Brooklyn, was hit badly. Red Hook is a Zone A neighborhood in NYC and thereby was under mandatory evacuation before the storm hit. It's a good thing Red Hook was evacuated because Hurricane Sandy flooded the neighborhood with 5 feet of water. Those who don't live or own businesses in Red Hook still ...

Our featured hotel in the Birth of a Hotel series, Capella Washington, D.C., Georgetown, narrowly escaped major damage during Hurricane Sandy. The hotel secured much of its construction equipment in advance of the storm, as shown in the photo above, but also was lucky to be just before "closing" stage, when the building is finally sealed and the roof finally put into place. ...

Oct 31st, 2012 at 7:00AM: The other day, a friend spent 40 minutes on the phone trying to rebook a trip from Orange County to New York City, only to have his request denied. But when we tried reaching out to the airline on Twitter, it took only 10 minutes for a response. After a few 140-character direct messages back and forth, we successfully switched flights within the hour.
Twitter can be a fast, easy and efficient ...

Richard Shepherd created this time lapse video of Superstorm Sandy hitting New York City by using images from the New York Times webcam, which has been positioned on the 51st floor of the Times building in midtown Manhattan since the start of the storm. The video shows the progression of Sandy from noon on October 29 until 9:30 a.m. on October 30. Keep your eye out for a shift at minute ...

As waters from the Frankenstorm caused by Hurricane Sandy subside, six million people are without power, hundreds of thousands have been evacuated and thousands more are stranded in airports around the country. Not exactly where everyone wants to be on the eve of yearly Halloween celebrations.
"It's the worst I've seen," said David Arnold, from Long Branch, N.J., in a New York Times report. ...
