Where does this look like to you? I guessed central Mexico based on the Spanish signs and the mixture of dry soil and lush plants. Actually it's Brazil. The next view I looked at showed the characteristic onion domes of a Russian Orthodox Church. I guessed Russia and was correct.
This is an addictive new online game called Geoguessr. It gives you random Google Street View images and you have ...

Travelers aren't born, they're raised.
Last week we talked about how to connect with your kids while you're away traveling. There are plenty of ways to get them interested in this great big world of ours while you're both at home too. One of the best and easiest ways to fire their imagination is with Google Maps.
Like many good ideas in our family, my seven-year-old son thought of it ...

Oct 25th, 2012 at 8:00AM: By now we've all marveled at how Google Maps and its Street View option, allow us to easily explore the world around us. Not only is it possible to use the system to find a new restaurant down the street, but it also gives us the ability to visit places like the Amazon, Pompeii and the Great Barrier Reef without ever leaving home. Soon you'll be able to add yet another natural wonder to that list, ...

Sep 27th, 2012 at 12:00PM: While Google Street View usually sticks to helping you explore land, users can now navigate Australia's Great Barrier Reef, right from their desks. Just launched, Google makes use of an innovative underwater camera that can record 360-degree images of the marine park.
The project is part of the Catlin Seaview Survey, which was launched today at Monterey, California. For the next three years, ...

Not only have they shown us the wonders of Ancient Mexico, but they've also taken us inside national parks, up the Amazon River and to a number of other iconic locations around the globe. But ...

We've talked a lot about Google Street View here on Gadling. It seems that every month a new attraction is added to this amazing and somewhat sinister application.
The latest is a series of views of the great monuments of Mexico. Google has been cooperating with the National Institute of Anthropology and History to take images of important sites such as Teotihuacan, Palenque and Chichen Itza. ...

The Internet search giant updated the service with imagery and data from the Amazon River, giving would-be explorers the opportunity to travel along that famous waterway without ever leaving the comfort of their own home.

Mar 10th, 2012 at 12:00PM: Earlier this week, Nature Valley launched a fun new website that delivers a Google Street View-like experience for hiking trails in some of America's most popular and iconic national parks. Dubbed Nature Valley Trail View, the new site allows hikers to explore over 300 miles of trail directly from their browser.
Much like its counter-part from Google, Trail View actually puts us on the ground ...

Oct 22nd, 2010 at 11:00AM: Ever had the feeling while traveling that you'd stumbled across something truly extraordinary? A beautiful unknown view or place that wasn't in your guidebook and only you discovered? That's how you'll probably feel after using Globe Genie, a nifty project that lets you randomly "teleport" around the world using Google's Street View feature.
What is Globe Genie exactly? It's a project created ...

Mar 1st, 2010 at 4:30PM:
Google Street View is probably one of the coolest mapping applications of the past decade (along with satellite images). I'll regularly pull up a Street View map before I head to a destination I've never been to, and in most cases, the images make it much easier for me to navigate. I've even used it on my Google powered phone as a way to get an idea where I'm heading.
Sadly, the European ...

Dec 4th, 2009 at 8:30AM: The ancient Roman city of Pompeii is the latest addition to Google Street View.
Available from Google's UNESCO World Heritage list of street views, it's the latest addition to a selection of famous sites that includes Stonehenge, Prague's historic center, and the Roman/Medieval Spanish town of Segovia.
Pompeii was a Roman provincial town near the Gulf of Naples in Italy. It was buried by a ...

May 15th, 2009 at 2:30PM: If you've ever been worried that Google Street View might expose your closet smoking habit, Greece might be the country for you to hang out in for a while. There, the Hellenic Data Protection Authority has banned Street View "until it provides further guarantee about privacy." Though Street View is intended to show, well, the view of the street in a 360-degree panorama, the camera lens also ...

May 14th, 2009 at 10:00AM: It seems like we can't get enough of Twitter lately. In fact, as the service continues to add new users, the number of applications that help you use it for travel only seems to grow. Recently we learned a quirky new tool called Stweet that links up the street level views found on Google Maps with the power of Twitter. Although applications like Twittervision already show you a real time map of ...

Apr 6th, 2009 at 2:00PM: Here in the US we are used to being able to zoom in on street level images of anything in our area. Google started mapping up and down our streets years ago, and it all happened with so little fanfare, that nobody really got the chance to complain. Things are different in the UK, where residents are beginning to complain quite vocally about the privacy invasion caused by the ability to get up ...

Mar 21st, 2009 at 12:00PM: Here in the US, we are used to having Google offer street level images of our country. Their cars have been driving around every town and city for several years, and have snapped millions of pictures. On March 18th, Google enabled imagery of The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy. Of course, not every city has been fully mapped, but the new images do mean you can do some ...

It's about time!
Google Maps Street View has finally made it to my home town of Los Angeles. This means that people around the world can now zoom in on Los Angelenos going about their day and doing the thing that Los Angelenos do, whatever that might be.
Naturally, a number of enthusiasts have already been scouring the Los Angeles footage for the bizarre and wacky, as well as quintessential ...
