When I found cheap airfare from Istanbul to Ljubljana, I didn't find many other travelers who'd been there or even say for sure which country it's in. The tiny of country of Slovenia is slightly smaller than New Jersey and its capital city isn't known for much other than being difficult to spell and pronounce (say "lyoob-lyAH-nah"). After spending a few days there last month, I quickly fell ...

London Southend Airport doesn't look like much. Compared to major London airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick and Stansted, it isn't much, yet starting next spring this little airport will be a new easyJet destination. EasyJet will be running 70 flights a week from there to Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Malaga and Majorca, Belfast, Amsterdam, and Faro.
It's a 50-minute train ride to Liverpool ...

Flying around Europe on low-cost airlines over the last few months has taught me a few things. Among the most useful lessons I've picked up: Baggage and check-in fees and charges are enforced quite unevenly.
European low-cost carriers present their customers with a frightening thicket of charges and fees. These charges, which serve as a revenue stream for the airlines, are less readily ...

Feb 19th, 2011 at 10:30AM: In a massive case of cultural insensitivity, London Luton based EasyJet has been forced to issue an apology to its Jewish customers on the London-Tel Aviv route.
On a recent flight, the available dinner options were bacon baguettes and ham melts. Needless to say, this did not go down too well with its passengers.
Accountant Victor Kaufman says he couldn't beleive his ears when he heard the ...

Even with airlines falling over themselves in an effort to generate profits out of new fees and charges, flying retains some glamour and excitement. No? Not working for you? Well there are mileage programs to exploit and perks to chase. And even in the direst landscape for customers, there are always new routes to sample, smiling flight attendants to befriend, and reliable pilots to thank for ...

Nov 16th, 2010 at 12:30PM: Budget carrier easyJet almost tripled its profits in the past 12 months as fuel prices dropped and passengers flocked to book cheap flights, BBC reports.
The airline released figures for the past twelve months through September, revealing a profit of £154m million ($247 million). The previous 12 months saw profits of £55 million ($88 million). A total of 49 million people flew on ...

Since moving to Istanbul, I've gotten the chance to travel to a lot of interesting destinations, from Beirut to Bosnia, that are much easier and cheaper to access from Turkey than America. For my first long (more than a weekend) trip, I went to Bulgaria for a week over US Labor Day and Turkish bayram (end of Ramadan holidays). Over the week, I traveled from the capital city Sofia to medieval ...

Oct 3rd, 2010 at 12:00PM: Earlier this week, 10 million Spanish workers went on strike to protest changes to workers rights and pensions. As usual, the strike shut down airports, forcing most European air carriers to cancel their flights. Once the strike was over, it took several days for things to get back to normal.
As airlines struggled to get enough planes back to Spain to pick up passengers, both Ryanair and ...

Sep 14th, 2010 at 8:30AM: If easyJet were to go insolvent before you could take a package you've booked online with the company, fear not: you're insured. Since the beginning of the month, the European low-cost carrier has arranged with credit protection company International Passenger Protection to make sure customers don't lose out if the airline as a whole takes a nose dive.
According to Paul Phillips, group ...

Aug 17th, 2010 at 11:30AM: EasyJet isn't letting unaccompanied disabled passengers onto its flights, and the French government is furious. It's threatening the airline with sanctions "with the greatest severity" for leaving these passengers on the ground. The government response was triggered by EasyJet's refusing to allow three passengers on flights after they bought tickets, citing safety concerns.
In a statement by ...

Jul 21st, 2010 at 12:30PM: Back in the late 90's, easyJet triggered a new era of low cost carriers. Founded by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the airline went from just 2 planes to over 175.
As one of the largest airlines in the United Kingdom, easyJet has had a lousy track record of on time departures and arrivals. In a recent report, the airline actually managed to score lower than Air Zimbabwe.
This bad PR is not only ...

Nov 20th, 2009 at 5:30PM: EasyJet has apologized to everyone who will listen over a fashion shoot that appeared in its inflight magazine.
Did the models wear too little? Did they look like fourteen year-old cokeheads? No, none of the usual stuff; they happened to be posing at the Berlin Holocaust Memorial.
Yes, some fashion photographer decided the concrete blocks known as the "Field of Stelae", properly called the ...

Aug 23rd, 2009 at 12:00PM: Even though the environment has changed dramatically, airlines in the US are a pretty calm and respectful bunch. New airlines come (and go), and their competition is limited to copying each others routes and prices. Very rarely will you hear airline A call airline B anything nasty. In Europe, things are different - very different. Competition in Europe is cutthroat, and this doesn't always end up ...

Jun 2nd, 2009 at 1:00PM: easyJet was ready to help passengers walk down the aisle while walking down the aisle. The airlines plans to conduct mile-high marriage ceremonies, however, were stymied by local British bureaucrats who said they couldn't give the airline permission. Under this unusual program, pilots – like captains at sea – would have facilitated the swapping of vows.
The relevant officials in ...

May 14th, 2009 at 10:30AM: It's amazing what a total lack of common sense can do for your company. Take for example the story of a check-in agent at Glasgow airport responsible for helping Easy Jet passengers. When 6 year old Amparo Peris-Bordes approched the desk with her mother, this EasyJet staffer told her that she'd have to pay 9 pounds, and send her teddy bear onto the conveyor belt, and into the hold as excess ...

May 5th, 2009 at 2:30PM: Desperate to generate some extra cash, every airline in the world is scrambling for ways to introduce new money making services. Some have considered paid bathrooms, others are going to double charge fatties. UK low cost carrier easyJet is in the lead at the moment in the creativity top 10. The airline is planning to introduce in-flight weddings on their planes, allowing couples to tie the knot at ...

Feb 27th, 2009 at 9:00AM: When Anthony Shlyshen showed up for work at Gatwick Airport he had had a few--actually several. According to this article, Shlyshen was more than three sheets to the wind when he thought he might be able to manage his easy Jet Airbus shift. Maybe he envisioned the plane's narrow aisle would keep him from weaving too much, and holding onto the seats from time to time would keep him steady. The ...

Feb 10th, 2009 at 3:30PM: The name is seductive: EasyJet. This low-cost airline boasts occasional fares of below €10 (one way) and can get you almost anywhere in Europe. What's not to love? Of course, entering the experience, you know deep down that there has to be some unpleasantness involved, but you accept that as a condition for cheap travel. After all, you're only inconvenienced for a few hours at the most ...

Feb 10th, 2009 at 11:30AM: Europe. For Spring Break? You must be joking right? Surely in this time of economic crisis and tightened budgets the European continent is out of reach for most, especially for the student traveler looking to save a few bucks on their Spring Break. And that's why we're here to tell you just how remarkably affordable AND easy it is to spend that week off partying it up in Prague, museum-hopping in ...

Feb 3rd, 2009 at 11:30AM: Summary: The low cost carrier (LCC) may seem like a new development in the aviation world, but the concept is anything but new. The first real low cost "no frills" airline was Laker Airways, which took off back in 1966 from the UK, and shuttled passengers to destinations all around the world for as little as $50. Laker Airways provided the inspiration for many of the current low cost carriers, ...
