Jul 27th, 2012 at 8:00AM: A much vaunted and highly publicized search for the remains of Amelia Earhart has apparently turned up little in the way of new evidence to help solve the puzzle of the famous aviator's ultimate fate. A team of researchers, armed with an array of high-tech gear, spent the past week searching a remote island in the South Pacific, but appear to have come up short in their quest to solve one of the ...

The U.S. National Ocean Service has released a statement confirming there is no scientific evidence for mermaids.
Interesting – I didn't realize this was a subject of debate.
Apparently it wasn't until Discovery Channel's Animal Planet network ran a spoof documentary titled "Mermaids: The Body Found." The channel's own press release labels the show "science fiction." This wasn't ...

Mar 1st, 2011 at 12:00PM: Last week I found myself flying to London with a captain who had started his career in pretty much the same way I did-he too had worked for a couple of airlines in Alaska, albeit more than a decade before me.
As we headed out to dinner, we happened to run into another pilot I knew who, coincidentally, flew for Era Alaska just as I had. Even more surprising was that his co-pilot flew for an ...

What happens when you combine leftover Halloween pumpkins and big ol' farm boys with too much time on their hands and extra equipment? A Punkin' Chunkin' contest, of course. Held this past weekend in Delaware, the 25th Anniversary of the World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association brought teams from up and down the East Cost to see how far their punkins could fly.
"We had a great, great ...

A couple nights ago, Will Ferrell made his much-anticipated debut on an episode of Bear Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild. The pair spent several frigid nights in the north of Sweden, and like everything WIll Ferrell does (okay, Blades of Glory excepted) there were plenty of laughs. Check out the Discovery Channel promo for the show above.
The whole episode has already been uploaded by some ...

Nov 8th, 2008 at 11:00AM: Filmmaker and Discovery and Science Channel star Les Stroud, known for his show, Survivorman, is calling it quits after three seasons. The 47 year-old Canadian earned street cred amongst survivalists by filming himself completing various week-long survival challenges. Unlike Man Versus Wild's Bear Grylls, Stroud traveled without a camera crew and survival experts. I, for one, found his solo ...

Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:00PM: Since I missed last week's Gadling Take FIVE, I am including posts from before last Friday and including more than five. As usual, it's hard to pick.
Start off with Iva's post about her trip to the Community Baboon Sanctuary in Belize. Like she said, don't let the mosquitoes stop you.
Scott personally tested Travelon toiletry sheets. After reading what he wrote, I think these would work ...

Jul 24th, 2007 at 4:46PM: Just the other day, my girlfriend and I were watching Bear Grylls on the Discovery Channel's Man vs. Wild and commenting on how crazy he was -- eating spiders, sleeping with snakes, and climbing up and down waterfalls while battling a massive case of diarrhea. Maybe he's not so crazy? The New York Post is running an article that questions the reality of Man vs. Wild, saying, "On the program, ...

Feb 28th, 2007 at 11:24AM: If you missed the press conference at the New York Public Library, where filmmaker James Cameron announced his new Discovery Channel movie, you might want to read up and do a little digging yourself.
If you hadn't heard the hype, Cameron's movie The Lost Tomb of Jesus, airs this Sunday. In it, he apparently argues that a couple of caskets, ossuaries actually, once contained the bones of Jesus and ...
