May 18th, 2009 at 8:00AM: Small planes just don't resonate with some passengers. MaryBeth and Cy Christiansan of Queens paid the equivalent of an extra ticket each to skip a Colgan plane and fly on a jet. They indicated that the Colgan crash in Buffalo back in February wasn't far from their minds. So, for a bit of comfort, it was $150 well spent.
A Colgan flight crashed in February, killing all 49 people on the plane and ...

May 13th, 2009 at 6:00PM: Remember that plane crash in February, in Buffalo? There were 50 fatalities. Well, it turns out the pilot would have lost his job if he hadn't lost his life. Marvin Renlsow, who was a pilot for Colgan, reportedly falsified his job application by not disclosing two failures on flight tests in small planes. Had his supervisors known, he "would have been immediately dismissed."
Currently, the ...

Apr 18th, 2009 at 3:00PM: Who thought that Tennessee and New Hampshire would be some of the top towns in the country for art lovers. AmericanStyle magazine just issued the results of its twelfth annual arts destinations poll. Some spots are predictable. Others, like Chattanooga, will just blow your mind. This is the first year Chattanooga made the list, shooting all the way up to second in the mid-sized city category. If ...

Mar 16th, 2009 at 1:30PM: We recently compared and contrasted some some beef and turkey jerky from Jerky.com. Were our cravings satisfied? Yes. Well, for the afternoon. What about Buffalo Jerky? Is that chewier, meatier, more healthy than turkey or beef? We tried some Black Pepper Buffalo Jerky to find out. Firstly, we loved the Black Pepper flavoring. It was spicy, but not overwhelmingly so. We could still taste the meat ...

Feb 15th, 2009 at 12:00PM:
Aviophobia, a fear of flying is not unusual. The American Psychological Association estimates that 10 percent to 25 percent of Americans suffer from it ... despite the fact that we all have heard how much safer flying is than driving. What few probably realize, however, is that this fear can be exacerbated by news of travel disasters: a condition called vicarious trauma.
Flying is one of the ...

Feb 14th, 2009 at 9:30AM: Imagine this scenario. You're feeling aggravated because your flight has been delayed. Because of this delay, you've missed your connection on another flight. The hours have ticked by while you're wondering when you might get to your destination.
Then you find out that the plane you would have been on if your flight had not been delayed had crashed into a house and everyone on board had ...

Feb 13th, 2009 at 8:05AM: The first thing I read this morning was the news about the plane crash of Flight 3047, a stark contrast to the landing of Flight 1549 into the Hudson. Perhaps, this is why Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III has down played his role as a hero. One different step and the outcome could have been the terrible version. The version that makes someone's heart stop for a second and think, "There but for ...

Feb 13th, 2009 at 5:30AM: Beverly Eckert, widow of 9/11 victim Sean Rooney, perished on Continental Airlines Flight 3407 last night. She was on her way to Buffalo to celebrate what would have been her husband's 58th birthday. While in town, she had also planned to participate in the presentation of a scholarship award at Canisius High School. She had created the scholarship in honor of her late husband.
The crash of ...

Dec 9th, 2008 at 12:30PM: Browsing through YouTube last night (taking advantage of it before it gets blocked here in Dubai, just like Flickr is), I came across this astounding video that some lucky travelers at Kruger National Park in South Africa were eye witnesses to. It has been viewed over 39 million times and has almost 43,000 comments. They have managed to get live footage of a baby water buffalo being caught by a ...

Sep 24th, 2008 at 2:00PM: Buffalo is famous for several great things: tons of snow, losing the Super Bowl, and wings. In the 44 years since their invention, wings have become an American favorite, served in every bar in the country. Whole restaurant chains have developed around the buffalo wing, but does anything compare to the closely guarded secret recipe of the original? Next time you're in Buffalo, find out for ...

Mar 10th, 2008 at 8:40AM: Only, the group of weather enthusiasts creating Buffalo's interactive "Weather Experience Center" don't consider blizzards "crummy." Instead, they hope to capitalize on Buffalo's changeable weather by feature it and other dramatic phenomena such as tornadoes and hurricanes in a museum-quality waterfront building. One feature on the center's drawing board is a "blizzard room," where visitors can ...

Jun 5th, 2007 at 7:59PM: Ah, Yellowstone. If ever there is a place that conjures up the American West. And what could be more appropriate for a shot of Yellowstone than a buffalo. I understand that the buffalo are undergoing a resurgence in Wyoming and Montana, thanks in large part to people like Ted Turner (who sells their meat). And for that we should all be glad. Of course, when you hear the stories about how many ...
