Sep 30th, 2011 at 8:30AM: A trend in the travel world that is becoming increasingly popular is the "experiential" hotel. Many travelers are no longer looking for a basic room in a premier location, but instead for an experience that will allow them to get to know an (often remote) area, or at least have their hotel be something they'll never forget. From staying in mines in the deepest hotel suite in the world to getting ...

Sep 1st, 2011 at 4:00PM: Airbnb, the company that provides a peer-to-peer accommodations marketplace, announced today that it will launch sublets. Currently, Airbnb offers only nightly or weekly bookings, but the new sublets category will enable travelers to book a home, apartment, houseboat, and scores of other types of lodging for a month - or months - at a time.
As Airbnb notes in its announcement, sublet rentals ...

I've been staying in a lot of hotels. Some nice ones, some not so nice, most owned or at least operated by a corporate parent. There's a anonymous familiarity about them all, which is comforting or unsettling, depending on my mood.
I've also crashed with some friends on this road trip, sleeping on a recliner in a living room in Detroit and an air mattress in an extra bedroom on Staten ...

Mar 18th, 2011 at 2:00PM: Once upon a time, I was addicted to travel reward programs. I see it now and laugh, but until seven years ago, I was hooked. I couldn't let go of my HHonors card, and I lamented that, at the end of 2001, I was one night away from Diamond on Hilton and two away from Platinum on Starwood. Looking back, I see how ludicrous the whole thing is. And it has taken until this week to see how much more ...

Nothing beats a crisp, cold beer after a long hike through the woods, and in northern San Francisco that can be found at a place called the Pelican Inn. Located at the edge of Muir Beach and adjacent to the Muir Woods National Monument, the Pelican Inn is well positioned among a variety of trail heads and nature preserves to make access easier for the wandering adventure traveler.

It's shaping up to be a busy, busy weekend for sports. The NFL's Pro Bowl is set to take place Sunday night, and a few hours prior, the NHL's All-Star Game will kick off in North Carolina's capital city. This weekend will be the first that Raleigh has hosted the All-Star Game, with the Carolina Hurricanes being the host team and their RBC Center being the host facility. Those living here (like ...

Oct 7th, 2010 at 3:00PM: If you've served your country, there's a bed and breakfast waiting to serve you.
Many B&Bs already give military discounts of 10 percent to 20 percent, but a Shinnston, West Virginia innkeeper is about to up the ante. Kathleen Panek has gotten more than 525 inns in 48 states (and two in Canada) on board with her plan give rooms away to active and retired service members on November 10, ...

May 11th, 2010 at 1:00PM: The school year is coming to an end, and summer vacation plans are starting to pop up. With heat poised to sweep the nation, the cool New England air (at least relatively cool) makes it an attractive destination. There are plenty of deals out there at the region's inns and resorts, so you'll have plenty of options at your disposal.

We'll just come right out and say it: far too many travelers and vacationers give far too little thought to where they're staying. Maybe we've just been trained to assume a nondescript hotel is the only option when it comes to spending a night away from home, but whether you're traveling for business or pleasure, things get a lot more interesting when you deviate from the norm. Not that we've any ...

Spring's upon us, and those summer months you've been desperately waiting for are nearly here (in this hemisphere, anyway). We can't help but say that anytime is a perfect time for a road trip, but the prime months for hitting the highway are just ahead, and that leaves you precious little time to prepare. In haste, many road trippers tend to overlook, or simply brush aside, one critical aspect ...

Dec 29th, 2009 at 2:30PM: As the year comes to a close, it seems everyone is offering up their predictions for 2010 travel trends. Which destinations will be the new hot spots? Will the cost of airfare rise or fall? Will people travel or won't they? As with every year, some predictions will be spot on. Others will just seem like the same ideas from last year dressed up with new names.

When it comes to lodging, most people automatically look for a hotel. And if you want room service, a business center, gym, and all the other perks that come with a hotel, that may be your best bet. But if you're looking for a more unique place to stay, if you want to save money, or if you want to experience a destination in an entirely new way, you have a whole range of options outside ...

Oct 29th, 2009 at 8:30AM: Neighbors of Domain Farm, a recently opened naturist Bed and Breakfast in Staffordshire, England, are complaining about seeing more than they want to of the guests.
The B&B is a converted farm and features a sun deck, hot tub, and barbeque area, and while it's set in a rural landscape, it is within sight of other homes. This brings it into the ongoing controversy, not limited to naturism, ...

Oct 2nd, 2009 at 2:00PM: Bed and breakfast guests aren't cutting back as much as other travelers, according to a new survey by BedandBreakfast.com. Fewer respondents are spending less on travel – with the rate doing so dropping from 55 percent to 45 percent from the second quarter survey. The money spent on B&B travel, however, will come at the expense of other luxuries, with many saying they'd give up their ...

At Denver's Queen Anne Bed and Breakfast, the mission statement is clear. Comfort, style and luxury can co-exist with sustainable, eco-friendly practices. And when it comes to green initiatives, Milan Doshi, the b&b's owner, seems to have thought of everything. The bedding, the paint, the food, the labor - every aspect of the b&b was specifically chosen to be as green as possible.

Not too long ago, any hotel that had one of those "please reuse your towels" signs in the bathroom was considered "green". But with new hotels upping the ante by adding more features that reduce waste and environmental impact, it takes a lot more than that to truly be green. Here are some of the greenest hotel features to look for in an eco-friendly hotel.

Jul 23rd, 2009 at 3:30PM: When I travel outside of the US, I often try to stay at bed and breakfasts. I love the personal attention I get at a b&b. I like the inside tips I get from the owners, who are usually more than happy to sit and chat over a glass of wine and offer recommendations on where to go and what to see in their city. I prefer staying in one of a city's neighborhoods, rather than downtown, so I can ...
