Detroit is like an empty lot down the street that's sat vacant for years. Some people in the neighborhood doubt it will ever be put to good use. Then one day, you notice that the rubble is being carted away, and there are actually some green shoots popping up from the newly cleared ground. Somebody, it seems, thinks they can make something of it.
That's what's happening with the Motor City ...

"Does Marriott have a minority problem?"
There's an interesting story over at Marketplace.org about a new movie coming out about Jackie Robinson and its corporate sponsor. Marriott, the worldwide hotel chain, is partnering up with Warner Brothers, the producers of "42," to be the official hotel sponsor for the film.
But why? In a film about baseball that took place far before Marriott ...

Sep 9th, 2012 at 10:00AM: I have been a fan of the Detroit Tigers since I was old enough to hold one of the big, fat, orange pencils that they used to sell at Tiger Stadium. Through the years, I've heard plenty about Ty Cobb, the famous, supposedly mean slugger who set records that still stand. Since his nickname was "the Georgia Peach," I knew he was from Georgia.
So, when I spotted a sign for Royston, Georgia, on ...

Seeing the recovery underway in Joplin, Missouri was an end point to a chapter of my trip. I'd done the Great Lakes, the East Coast, the South and, now, the Midwest. As I drove out of Missouri, the great expanse of the West loomed, a monstrous stretch of America to cover in the less than two weeks that remained in my trip.
I wasn't looking forward to it. After eight weeks in the car, on ...

"How long have you guys been sitting down here," the drunken heckler asked me and my buddy Stephen, around the seventh inning of a Mobile BayBears game at Hank Aaron Stadium. "All game," I replied.
"So have I said any curse words?" he asked, knowing that he hadn't, his point being that if some fans didn't like his good-natured heckling, they could sit somewhere else--and lighten up. This ...

The rivalry between the Cubs and the White Sox is no doubt one of the greatest in the sports community, each teams reflecting the vastly different attitudes and culture between the north and south sides of Chicago. Despite the tension, however, there's always room for some joviality, and this year, United jumped into the fray by bringing a pair of its identical twin pilots down to U.S. ...

Delta's been Atlanta's hometown airline for decades, and it looks like the bond between the two is getting a little stronger with the start of the 2011 Major League Baseball season. Delta Air Lines and the Atlanta Braves have announced a partnership that will lead to the opening of a new lot at Turner Field. Or, at least a re-branded portion of a lot. The current Green Park Lot -- which is ...

Oh, how the times have changed ...
It used to be that fame-whores would look for television cameras at riots. With all the beating and smashing and mayhem around them, these unique individuals would invariably find the news crews and get their 15 minutes.
Not this time around.
When the San Francisco Giants won the World Series, a riot broke out ... and the check-ins began. The locals ...

"Hey, batter, batter, batter . . . saa-weeeeng!" doesn't translate directly, but the Greenlandic word for it is Anaasilluni, meaning to swing or to hit.
When I saw these kids batting around in the schoolyard, I smiled and thought, "Hey, isn't that cool? They're playing baseball!"--but actually no, it's not baseball. The game is called Anaalerooq, or "hit ball" and it's played all across ...

The Millennium Hotel in downtown Minneapolis, which is walkable to Target Field, has unveiled a Baseball Fever Package for die-hard Twins fans who want to stay downtown (even if they just live over in Wayzata).
The package, which includes:

Convenient complimentary parking in the hotel's attached parking ramp

I grew up going to the Metrodome, that is to say, I grew up going to baseball games inside of an inflatable moonwalk where all the seats faced the 50 yard line. There was a lot of controversy when the Twins wanted a new stadium, as there always is in every city. Now that I've visited Target Field, I feel confident calling it "money well spent." I was fortunate enough to head to Target Field with ...

The Cleveland Indians have introduced "the ultimate sports suite" at Progressive Field this baseball season. They call it the FanCave.
The suite above first base offers a pool and ping-pong table, sports-themed furniture, arcade games and six HDTVs.
The best part just might be the private restroom. The Indians change out the toilet paper before each game, ensuring that the roll features ...

May 1st, 2009 at 9:00AM: This Wednesday, I was fortunate enough to receive a private tour of the new Yankee Stadium which opened up April 16th. For your perusal, I took about 5 million photos. Here is a small percentage of them -- and this is the only place you'll find them. Tommy Bahama Rum has a whole bar set up near Gate Six of the new Yankee Stadium (shown), which is the gate right at the subway station, where you can ...

Oct 1st, 2008 at 9:30AM: 3:05 pm. The plane from Beijing has barely landed, and I'm already on my phone. The screen flashes 5:05 pm, and for a moment, I fear I've missed the ballgame, that I've flown 2,400 miles to the heart of China's wild west-roughly the distance between New York and San Francisco-for empty bleachers and discarded foam fingers. Then, I remember that there are two worlds here in Xinjiang, each with its ...

Feb 14th, 2008 at 7:40AM: It seems like just yesterday that the Boston Red Sox swept the surging Colorado Rockies to win their second World Series in four years.
Yes, it's hard to believe, but in two short weeks, baseball's Spring Training will begin. For the uninitiated (or the un-American), Spring Training is the month-long period of exhibition games before the Major League Baseball season. Every team travels to either ...

Oct 17th, 2007 at 9:30AM: If you can't stand missing the World Series, but you absolutely must travel during one of the games, don't fret just yet. If Frontier Airlines is flying to your destination, you may just be in luck -- and you might want to book your ticket now. The Denver-based airline is negotiating with DirectTV for permission to show the series on its flights if the Rockies are playing. The airline, which shows ...

Aug 26th, 2007 at 8:18AM: Nothing is more American than apple pie and baseball. And nothing is more baseball than peanuts and Cracker Jacks. Maybe 100 years ago ... Today's major-league stadiums are chock-full of specialty foods that are often signature items for a particular park. For me, growing up in Los Angeles, it was the Dodger Dog. Mmmm ... I was disappointed, however, to learn that the Dodger Dog did not make this ...

Aug 19th, 2007 at 3:00PM: In towns around the country, history buffs and sports fanatics have gone old school, by donning itchy woolens, picking up big bats, and swinging for the fences.
There's been a resurgence in vintage baseball, played using traditional uniforms and using rulebooks from 100 or more years ago, notes an article in today's NY Times.
Just yesterday, we watched an old-time game of baseball at Fort ...

Feb 14th, 2007 at 10:03AM: Many sports fans were at a loss this past weekend. With football on hiatus for another off-season, it's time to get psyched about America's national pastime: baseball. For the serious fan (or the person married to a serious fan that just wants to get away from the cold), it might be time to consider a trip your favorite team's spring training camp.
The most popular destination are Florida and ...
