Are noise-canceling headphones frivolous or necessary? {Gadling}

May 3rd 2010 3:05AM I bought my Bose noise-cancelling headphones after a short, miserable 45 minute flight with a fussy baby on board. I've flown with them several times since, not always wearing them as I enjoyed the company of the neighboring passengers. They are especially great on the longer flights drowning out the babies, loud engines and passengers. Now if we can only tie those munkins up that constantly kick the back of your seat! Thank you Bose!

SmackDown: Did Air Traffic Dad Really Do Anything So Wrong? {ParentDish}

Mar 5th 2010 12:58AM The controller was engaging in a common training procedure called parroting. If a monkey could talk, they could relay the info just as the child did. The controller had the ability to override any of the transmissions. If it were busy at the time, the child would have not have been in the Tower Cab.

The media is doing nothing but creating news instead of reporting it. If any of you naysayers knew anything about ATC, you would see how silly this has become.

If you think that controllers don't think of anything else during work, then you are sadly mistaken. Making a statement like you must only focus on the air traffic every second is impossible, if not absurd. Controllers are trained constantly to suppress the distraction and focus on the most important aspect of the job.. Separating traffic. You can compare that logic to driving your car on the freeway and saying that you aren't allowed to speak to anyone in your car, can't listen to the radio, or chew gum - as you must focus only on driving.

Yes..you must limit and manage distractions, but a little levity actually enhances your ability to focus. One is trained that way..

The father and kid did a great job.. I guarantee the pilots out there thought it was a hoot..

So.. Ya'all lighten up out there..

Floyd Mayweather: 'If I Was White' {BV on Sports}

Sep 20th 2009 11:13PM Ya know Mayweather, I was rooting for you to win.. I was at dinner with someone the other day who professed (30 minutes into the conversations) that he was black.. I asked what the hell he was talking about.. Not for one second did I even think it, until he mentioned it.. Am I supposed to treat him differently now?

I thought Mayweather was a great fighter before all his free usage of the "n" work. Now he's just a racist black fighter that shouldn't be given another seconds worth of media coverage..

I never use the 'n" word, and don't appreciate anyone else using it.. Black, White, or any other people of color out there (if you are shallow enough look for that in people). My kids weren't brought up that way either..

Shame on Mayweather and all his so-called mentors out there.. Get a grip you spoiled millionaire brat.. Quit the hating and be thankful for what opportunities that have come your way...

Jimmy Carter Leaves Church Over Treatment of Women {Politics Daily}

Jul 21st 2009 4:16AM Props to Jimmy Carter, but come on.. We should all quit looking at people of color, race or gender as people of color, race or gender.. It took him 60 years to realize this, and finally take a stand? I would have respected him even more had he decided this 50 years ago..

Jimmy APPEARS to be a great individual whom I have much respect for.. However, he has a political side that I question..

One may have guessed I don't care too much for politicians. How honest can they really be? Of course they must APPEAR to agree with the masses to be a politician and survive.. Come on Jimmy.. You should have stood up 50 years ago..

10 Ways to Get Yourself Labeled as an Ugly American {Gadling}

Nov 17th 2008 1:23AM cowpiebingo has a point by saying American isn't a race.. I would prefer to avoid a run-on dialog about the semantics of racism.. However:

Ugly Americans in the eyes of some folks in other countries are perceived as smug GROUP of people who feel they are superior to others. We as Americans hopefully know better...

Nazi's as a GROUP felt they were a superior RACE. This was an example of racism in it's most awful form. Although it is an extreme comparison. This.. Unfortunately, is how we have been perceived in other countries..

Our actions, whether good or bad in the eyes of foreigners form their racial opinions of us. Hatred for American nationals is not Nationalism. It is just another form of racism..

10 Ways to Get Yourself Labeled as an Ugly American {Gadling}

Nov 15th 2008 12:14PM I am an American that grew up all over the world. I now live in Las Vegas.

I see ugly people. I see nice and polite people. The moniker "Ugly" can be attached to any nationality. This is an excellent story that should have applied to all nationalities.

I was 17 in Tehran, Iran in the 70's when a taxi cab full of muslim "American-haters" pulled up onto the sidewalk and tried to hit me with the car while screaming obcenities. Some other Iranian "friendlies" warned me of the car approaching from behind and then threw rocks at the offenders as they sped off.

These rude and obnoxious behaviors aren't racially specific. Every time someone identifies them as such just because someone HAPPENS TO BE American adds fuel to racism. I am offended by this approach. I believe the author took a racist view of this subject and should do more research.
