AIM Profiles: Temporarily Down {People Connection Blog - OLD}

Oct 15th 2007 9:52PM KClar -- Profiles are available now. Please see Jeremy's entry (that follows mine) about the profiles 2.0.5 rollback.

Regarding official communication on outages and other product things -- I agree we need to do a better job. In this particular instance, though, I'm not sure what the right mechanism would have been -- for instance, a mass e-mail wouldn't work in this timeframe, and I don't know that we could have gotten a customized error screen to message this. But it's something we should look into.

As to your other point -- you bring up a series of different profile-related issues, all with different causes. For example, the adult content profile spam was due to a combination of password phishing and security exploits, and we've worked to address both.

No one likes to see any downtime, much less significant downtime, in any production product. Trying to minimize member-facing impact is one of the reasons why installs usually start at 4AM. I don't know exactly why the outages went so far into the afternoon, but I agree that it wasn't a good thing.

Thanks -- Joe

9/4: Member Directory Profiles Status {People Connection Blog - OLD}

Oct 9th 2007 11:53AM Hi Sean -- I've asked the tech guys to take a look; there is apparently a bug in the interaction between AOL Pictures and Member Directory Profiles that causes this to happen sometimes. They're investigating but there's no ETA on a fix yet.

Thanks -- Joe [posted & mailed]

On 10/4, Good Buddy, Leave Someone Else a Comment {People Connection Blog - OLD}

Oct 5th 2007 2:09PM I'm planning on doing a followup -- outside of the People Connection promotion, I didn't do any of the stuff that you're supposed to do (reach out to your network of friends, submit links to social bookmarking sites, etc) -- I also didn't do any commenting of my own -- 10/4 was a busy day and I was slack on a lot of things. But thanks for noticing. -- Joe

Knives and Penises Don't Mix {People Connection Blog - OLD}

Oct 2nd 2007 10:42AM Brenda -- if I'm not mistaken, re: the well-publicized TOS actions involving the word "breast" in breast cancer forums: yes, those were definitely mistakes and they shouldn't have happened. They also occurred in 1995/96, and both the policy and the process should make a little more sense in the intervening 11 years.

If you're aware of more recent incidents of similar injustices, please ask the affected persons to contact Joe or Nancie as mentioned above.

Thanks -- Joe

Knives and Penises Don't Mix {People Connection Blog - OLD}

Oct 1st 2007 7:53PM Hi Brenda. Thanks for your comment:

1. I didn't post this on a message board, I posted it to this blog (complete with an "after the jump" content warning for the potentially squeamish)
2. Even if I had posted this to a board, this content doesn't violate TOS or Community Standards -- it's a current news discussion, and the word "penis" used here doesn't contain a threat nor is it used in a sexually explicit manner (as defined by TOS/standards) [Note: Joe/Nancie helped me word this point.]
3. AOL internals are just as subject to TOS and Community Standards as anyone else; we're also subject to editorial and programming guidelines (additionally, if we violate these, we're subject to other sanctions).
4. If a member posted this in a board or Journal, they wouldn't be in violation and shouldn't get TOSed, either. (If an employee makes a mistake of this nature, the affected member should reach out to Joseph or Nancie for corrective measures.)
5. I can't speak for the entire organization, but we generally try to not to intentionally mislead members, since incorrect info causes more confusion and problems for everyone. We work with Member Services to try to make sure correct information goes out. Obviously, people make mistakes, but we're working on it. Please let us know if you find occurrences of this so we can fix it.

Thanks -- Joe

Welcome to the Mac@AOL Product Blog! {Macblog}

Sep 27th 2007 2:22PM Welcome aboard! I was talking to Brian in the CC2 cafeteria yesterday and he mentioned you'd be launching. Look forward to getting updates on what's going on in the Mac world (I recall a few interesting demos that I'd like to know what happened to.)

Thanks -- Joe Loong

AOL: Possibly, Maybe Not Doomed {People Connection Blog - OLD}

Sep 26th 2007 3:46PM Brenda -- no hidden meanings. I just think that any clear-eyed observer of AOL products knows that there are plenty of fundamentals we need to work on (hence the blocking and tackling reference) -- as we also work on innovating and doing new things.

I just talked to some more of the product folks, so I'll be beating up on them more to get them talking about stuff like boards, chat, etc.

Thanks -- Joe

Let Us Know What You Want! (And I'll be Away for a Bit) {People Connection Blog - OLD}

Sep 21st 2007 1:01PM Lisa -- I'm guessing the AOL FanHouse bloggers would be very upset to see your question: http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse

They cover MLB, NBA, NFL, NASCAR, and more.
